  • Medicine has changed drastically in 50 years, but what hasn't changed is the care provided by Mercy. On Dec. 17, 1963, the Sisters of Mercy moved patients from St. John's Hospital on Euclid to the current site of Mercy Hospital St. Louis. Hear from some of the Sisters and doctors who helped during the move and how things have changed in 50 years.

I have been working at the hospital for 23 years. Now the complex on Ballas turns 55. I remember Sister Mica Marie. I learned even more history there. I had a supervisor that was named Larry Gibson and from his words and from what I saw in the core area where the trash is tossed down a chute, the chute doors were operated by a pedal. The floors were color coded. The basement was all red, Ground was pink, 1 was the only floor that was stainless steel, 2 was gold, 3 was maroon, 4 was metallic green, 5 was lime green, 6 was yellow, and 7 was a very dark green. Gibson had a dream of me being a floor tech, scrubbing and buffing floors rather than me doing elevators. He too could remember the days when not only did we have the buses that got people to work but we also had streetcars. Out at the Museum of Transport, St. Louis Public Service PCC streetcar #1743 ran on the Delmar line from 1946 until 1957 When the hospital was still on Euclid, that streetcar probably had the assignment of taking some Mercy employees to Euclid to change to the #18 Taylor line.

Graduated from the St. John's Without Mercy Nursing School (as it is now affectionately referred to) in 1962. Still proud to have been affiliated with such a caring group of people.
