The top plate slots on the Mellon head are meant to hold moisture and lather that then keeps the blade lubricated, hence the original design name was "Self Lubricating Open Comb" (SLOC) back in the 1940s.

@@JimWillShave The original inventor was Joseph M. Mellon and his SLOC patent was granted April 24, 1945. The razor was sold by Grand Razor Co as "Self Lubricating Razor" in the late 1940's I believe for just a few years. Just keeping up your education...😁

Yaqi razor quality has improved over the last few years and they are well priced, I have no qualms about buying Chinese made razors, after all most of my household gear is made there.🤓
