According to Corey Taylor in an interview with Loudwire, the song is about himself and the different sides that a human has. The whole Joey connection is made up by fans, according to Taylor.

The Negative One is the one song that can compete with their best songs from the first two albums. It's also the closest they have come to sounding like those two albums. It's just fantastic.
The first riff of the Negative One is just absolutely just... so good.

I'm still keeping my fingers crossed for I am Hated... the Heretic Anthem... I think Slipknot peaked on Iowa...They aren't the same with the vocal change and without Joey.

Also Corey has stated in an interview that the song isn’t about Joey, it’s still about Paul. Also I don’t think Joey was on drugs, the band thought he was but it turned out he had a wasting disease or something. Can’t remember the name of the disease he had but he’s fine now.

Yup yup. RockFeed has a lot of good news updates about Joey n Slipknot, history n all that n he even explains that how the band is still open to the possibility of Joey returning one day. They got upset when the new drummers ID was discovered for that exact reason. Small chance....but there's still a chance. Joey even said he still writes songs on his own that he stores away and will only ever share with Slipknot if the day ever comes. But it's easy for Vin to think that, there's been a LOT of bad info spread all over the web about that whole sitaution. Joey n the band barely said anything about it for a few yrs after it happened, so ppl speculated the fuck out of it n distorted so much.

The gray chapter is like going back to the good old days of slipknot. There's an excellent mini audio biography on here with the band talking about all the albums, and clown says the gray chapter has reignited what the band are. Definitely give it a wee watch.

I saw a video interview where Corey explained a bit about the song. He's talking about the sides of his human nature. The negative one was the side that was mad at Paul for the way he ended up. The other side, well, it's the side that's sad for losing his bro. And that's a pretty big theme all along the record. I'll try to find the video with the interview.

Michael and Scottie vs Toni Kukoc. The story behind this...The Bulls (GM Jerry Krause) had drafted Kukoc in the 2nd round of the 1990 draft and Krause had been talking him up in the local media. Krause would not renegotiate Pippen's contract specifically because he was saving money to try and bring Kukoc over to the Bulls. Both MJ and Pippen always had an adversarial relationship with Krause and so when they met up with Kukoc in the Olympics they wanted to shutdown Kukoc to make Krause look bad. Well, Pippen who is one of the all-time great defenders covered Kukoc like a blanket...held him to 2 of 11 shooting and 4 points and the Dream Team beat them by 33.

I think part of the reason for the Elon musk thing is cause people only saw the hours not the question, but primarily there’s a lot of things going on in the gaming world right now where teams are working 100+ hour weeks no pay crunch time to get ahead and then get fired as soon as the project is done. The 100 hour work week hasn’t been the most beloved thing as of recent for sure
