This is a great video in that we had a greyhound once upon a time that would sleep with her eyes almost half open so you didn't know if she was awake or asleep. Thanks once again for a valuable public service!
Thank you very much for sharing your Beautiful Greyhounds. I recently rescued a Borzoi, and while not the same dog, very similar in behavior. Your videos have helped me immensely to bridge the gap with a needy, neglected hound. I am immensly grateful to you, your wife, Magnus, and Scout, you have helped me in a dark time when I wanted to help a dog and not give up, but also cried tears every night. I have a better relationship with my Borzoi today following you and Magnus. I still keep hope that I will be lucky to get my Borzoi a rescue Greyhound brother or sister. Keep up the great work!!!!You are loved. I only wish Virginia, USA has such a rescue club as your local one someday.
Glad you found the videos helpful. that is great to hear. We had a tough time with Magnus when we first brought him home. we had lots of issues to deal with. But you get past those tough moments and before you know it you forget all the drama and just enjoy your new companions. Magnus is a great communicator now and it is easy to know what he is after.
Hello. Wonderful presentation. I never had any problems with sleep startle, but then I never did any of the things you mention not to do. I don't like being startled awake, so I don't do it to anyone else including my pets. You always give sound information. Magnus looked so funny as he watched Scout carry off a shoe. I had to chuckle to myself. Love to Scout and Magnus. Greyhounds are so very sweet and gentle. Thanks for telling the world what greyt pets they make. Virginia Denney in Ohio
All the way here in Brooklyn, New York we LOVE Magnus and Scout and my 12.5 year old Pensacola Greyhound Park rescue Gorgeous Gracie is a big fan of your greys.
My Timmy had terrible sleep startle when he first came to me. It took a couple of months for him to settle. He had come from a very difficult background, so understandably, it was a tougher adjustment for him. Great advice to anyone with a hound. Love your videos & the shoe thief is hilarious! I have a 'collector' hound, with shoes being a very popular addition to his treasure hoard ❤️
Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment. Glad you like the video. Not everyone agreed with my tips, but I think they are a useful guide. Thanks for sharing your story.
This is an excellent video! I’ve been rescuing greyhounds with my family as early as I could walk and I’m bringing home a new adoptee from a foster this week. They’re truly such a special and loving breed
When I was a dog groomer ,I liked greyhounds It is one of my favorite breeds. Even though I will probably never own one, I like watching your clips. Thank you
Just wanted to say that I've really enjoyed your videos. I'm from the Midlands in the UK and 6 weeks ago we adopted our own greyhound Sully aged 3.5 years. I've been able to understand some of his behaviours better from watching your videos and after some trials our whole family loves Sully. We have some work to do as you would expect, he has some reaction to smaller dogs when out walking, but mainly to dogs that are off lead and run up to him. His recall is rubbish, but that's no surprise. He isn't interested in sofas or upstairs, but loves to sleep on the rug next to me while I'm working. He's finally stopped growling when we lie next to him to pet him (perseverance on our part) and his sleep startle is minimal, but he does growl a lot in his sleep which is quite amusing. He happily stays home alone if needed and sleeps through the night with no issues and is completely clean in the house. I've considered doing some videos of my own, but I think you've about covered it! :-) Good job guys.
Thanks for your kind words. Glad to hear that you liked the videos. Hope Sully is doing. They can have a tough time at first settling into their new lives. But after a while you forget all the tough times. They are great dogs and great companions. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
My boston terrier mix had sleep startle. The unfortunate thing is he always wanted to sleep on you or next to you. It got tricky. He made a lot of noise but never bit. Loved that dog.
I love sight hounds. (do not forget lurchers, possibly the most interesting because of the characteristics they inherit from their non-sighthound parents.)
Great video, thank you. My Charlie came off the track at 4, and sleep aggression was a big issue for a long time. I had a few scary moments, but glad we worked through it. I’m still careful, give him the space he deserves.
We still are careful with Mags and give him space when he is in a deep sleep. Scout does not have any sleep startle so we do not have to worry about Scout on that end.
@@magnusgreyhound Hi, sorry I'm late. Although I'm wondering how do you test out if they have sleep startle? Would the rescue center know and have tested this out? I obviously don't want to disturb a sleeping dog, although I want to be able to walk past without losing a foot lol. I also don't want to test it out as I want to prevent losing a finger 🤣. I've reserved a greyhound named Grace and hopefully soon she'll be coming home for her two week trial, if all goes well she's mine to adopt 🤞🏽. I think this is one of my biggest fears and I'm looking as much advice I can get :).

Sweet dog... I lost an expensive bridle leather `greyhound lead on a field, and needed it to walk home with..I said to my son's dog ''Where's your lead? Go seek it! ...and he found it! Luckily he knew the word ''Lead'' and ''Seek it'' . {Whippet} They do love a walk...and a gallop!
Very good advice esp if you have young children around. Our first grey used to "shoe stack" to get our attention & we now have a lurcher that collects socks!
We've been going through this since adopting our greyhound 4 months ago. It is getting better. He sleeps with his eyes open and even paws and people to touch him, but he' still out of it. Great video!
Scouts shoe stealing is so cute! Thank you for making these videos they’re very informative. We’re currently fostering a rescue ex racing greyhound so it’s been nice to learn so much about them.
I adopted a retired greyhound last week and have been watching your videos for advice, so thanks for that! We may end up seeing you on one of the Edinburgh weekend walks as we aren't far away and Percy could do with making some friends :)
Thanks for watching. Hope the videos are helpful. We will be back at the walks at the kennels once they are fully back up and running. It's great to help socialise the pups in a safe environment. Hope your Grey settles in quickly. It can be tough at first, but it does get easier. They are great dogs.
I learned this ........ We had a Lurcher pup {from RSPCA} who had health issues from neglect even at 12 weeks. Anyway, she was asleep on the sofa, and I leaned over her to get a book off the bookcase...and stopped to kiss her snout as it was on the sofa arm.... She awoke immediately and ''snapped'' the air, it clearly alarmed her, it was absolutely a reflex.... I never did anything so silly again. First time dog owners, newly adopted, she didn't know us well yet. She was a ''Soul mate'', but probably took a few months to really 'bond' and become less aloof...She was never a ''cuddly'' dog, but happy to lie next to you on her terms. She died aged 12, {A kindly vet came to our house } after being a superb companion. 💕 I was heartbroken. Edit : She adored shoes and socks too but never damaged them. Would run off and take any visitors shoe..only one...and hide it.
My second greyhound came with sleep startle. Something I had heard of but never experienced despite having had many many dogs. It was quite scary the first few times he woke with a start which could have just been by another of my dogs waking past him. He would air snap or bark or growl. I researched it and although the other four sleep in the bedroom his bed was put in the hall. He liked this. It was out out of the way so you didn't have to step over him. I learnt that it can be improved or stop all together if the dog is reassured he is safe each time he wakes. The suggestions were for you to touch his foot to get him used to touch while not being threatened by anyone standing over him etc ie touching him from a distance. Also touch him with soft toys so he wakes with his favourite toy with him. But no sign of you etc. And calling their name to wake them up. It worked. Mostly he wakes happy and relaxed. Occasionally he yelps if another dog has woken him. He got over most of his sleep startle within a few weeks and I've had him five months now and it's all bit gone. However I do not forget and give him space. Now he wants to sleep in the bedroom 😊
I never ever saw myself as a greyhound man until I saw my girl Banjo at a local shelter. After going through all the usual checks we adopted her and has become the queen of the house, she's a retired racer and came with some psychological baggage but there are workarounds and she's really doing fine. The dog's a thief to the tune of eight pork chops, one Kg. belly of pork, two fillet steaks, and a sirloin steak, all our own fault bless her. Fortunately, we like beans on toast as the dog slept digesting our dinners. Barbed wire fencing is now the order of the day when meat is left to thaw.
This, as are all the other videos, was really helpful and lovely to watch. We are welcoming our very first greyhound Molly tomorrow and are excited and rather nervous too. Your videos of your beautiful greyhounds have been so reassuring. Thank you both (and Magnus and Scout of course) Julia
Thanks for watching. Glad you found the videos useful. All the best with your adoption. They are great dogs. Just need a bit of patience to help them settle in.
My 13 yr old greyhound just suddenly passed away last week, but the rule in our house was when she was on her bed don't touch her even if she is awake, a few times she had growled at me and my 12 yr old son for patting her when she was awake on her bed and she didn't want to be patted or touched, she was a serious grumpy old girl.
Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment. Magnus is good with following except when he gets excited, then he is a bull in a China shop. He has head butted me plenty of times.
I have a whippet who started to exhibit this behavior -- turned out she has gone deaf and the sleep startle is a result of that (we didn't know she was deaf when the sleep startle began). Also, we used to take care of our friend's Scottish Deer Hound. She was the sweetest thing, but definitely had sleep startle. We always were careful in waking her.
Can you do a video on leash training and equipment comparisons? I feel Magnus and Scout are well adapted, but would love your opinions on merchandise and handling for owners of a shy, untrained leash hound could employ in training. I have noticed several different collars or leashes that you use with both dogs and your feelings on the pros and cons. Are the products you use available in the USA?
@@magnusgreyhound very much. I have adopted a retired racer. I see why people end up with more than one hound. He is an absolute delight. Your vids have been a great help in understanding him. 😃🐾🌻♥️
My grey has bad sleep aggression. I can't go near him. Dodged a few bites now. Although recently he will come to lay next to me to sleep, which has never done before, and he won't growl. I still don't touch him. It's sad to see him growling an trying to bit, but makes me happy he's now starting to trust us after 2 years at home. X sometimes a grey needs patience and understanding
LOL, I startled my hound mix the other day by my pool. HE nipped me, LOL. I love him so much. He's such a creepy dog. I won't hear him coming but I'll turn around and he'll be right behind me after being at the other end of my long house.
Creepy..Lol! I call it ''Wraith -like''...that silent-ness. {edit: or Stealth Mode} My friend's Lurcher does this...silently appears behind you.But due to Covid we meet only outdoors now...so less chance of ''Mission Creep'' to see if there is anything edible in the bin . My own Lurcher was very silent too...I do love their quietness. Noisy, yappy dogs would drive me dotty.
@ Lol! That could definitely make someone jump..They can have quite a reach if they want to. They sort of ''stretch'' ..Having a face silently staring can make one jump. My son crept into my room one Hallowe'en night with a hideous over the head mask on he'd bought from the supermarket I was asleep, and son was low down next to my face...I was half asleep clawing at this hideous thing, and he was saying ''Mum! Mum! it's me!! ..I think I had ''Sleep startle!'' 😂
Scout is a bit of a ninja dog too. you turn around and she is there. you never hear her approaching. Magnus is very loud, so you hear him from a mile away.
@@magnusgreyhound My friend and his Lurcher came round for first time in months {Covid} and she absolutely hadn't forgotten to Stealth about... It was like Where *IS* she?....She is so silent.... My other friend had a Staffie...He is Dangerously quiet and he does that thing standing right behind you at a counter, so if you step back , it is like tripping over a footstool. {Low and solid!}...But when he lumbers up the wooden stairs he huffs and his nails make a noise.
This helped me today I disturbed my grey Indie tonight and I started balling crying we have had her 10 months and it has happened a few times but I got so upset she was asleep on the couch next to me and it was completely my fault. When bad things happen I always feel like I'm a bad dog mom
Glad the video helped. I had seen a few comments on various facebook group about people getting frights from their pups being startled, so i though I would make the videos to highlight it so people can know how to interact with a pup who suffers from sleep startle. It can be challenging learn to live with some greyhound behaviours so no need to feel like a bad dog mum.
My dogs usually don't snap if someone wakes them up, but they definitely snap, and sometimes even wake themselves by barking while they sleep. Also, does Magnus or Scout ever sleep in a running position? My Greyhounds do it all the time.
when i adopted my greyhound luna she was never raced but had two failed adoptions due to barking anxiety and she had to go on two ferry,s to get to me so naturally she suffered with sleep startling / aggression for the first few months or so but now 9 months down the line the aggression side of the sleep startling has gone and now she just jumps up startled as if to say hey whats going on and then i use a gentle voice and stroke her and she goes straight back to sleep she likes to cuddle into me on the bed but sometimes the slightest move i make startles her and iv learned to stroke her gently before i move and it helps stop her getting startled
Mine suffers very badly from this, your not wrong about them looking awake and not being so. None of my previous ones have had it so it was a bit of a shock, special with the growling and snapping (also biting on occasion). I'll try some of your tips, thanks!
Hey We have a dog named Happy and he is about to be 1 year old. He is generally a loving and playful pup and recently he started a new behaviour of growling after waking up from sleep. One time after he woke up in the middle of the sleep and he tried to snap at me because I was very close to him and then after coming back to reality he then licked me and then he was normal...but lately this behaviour has increased a lot.. Even though he himself gets up from the sleep and he will be wagging his tail if I try to pet him he is growing and chasing me to bite and after few hours he comes and acts normally. The frequency of the behaviour is increasing and it's really getting scary . He does this to me and my mom.. we are the ones who generally feed him play with him etc while he is growing my dad comes and stops him ..he then becomes silent and he will stop his behaviour. Can you please help us with this
Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment. Unfortunately, there is no cure or fix for sleep startle. You need to give your dog space when it is sleeping. This can be hard as some dogs sleep with their eyes open (Magnus does this at times). It is best to give them their own sleeping space and not on a human bed. Also it is best to call their name and get them to react to you before approaching that way they have time to wake up and not get startled. Over time this behavior may ease, Magnus is not quite as bad as he once was. Hope this helps
I just want to ask one thing. Did your Greyhounds not make the worst smells ever after eating the cream? My Lurcher would empty an entire house with the smells if i gave him even HALF the amount your dogs had lol You have to beautiful dogs there, going to be adopting one myself next year once mine has got fully matured
@@oxcart4172 Greyhounds don't live in harsh conditions. They have very clean, comfortable crates or pens to sleep and eat in. They are regularly exercised and walked and get plenty of play/potty time every day. They are groomed and checked by kennel Vets all the time. They are loved by their handlers. They love to race, to chase the lure. It's a fun game for them.
My 13 year old greyhound has gotten worse with sleep startles as she’s aged. You can tell she feels bad once she realizes there’s no reason to be scared :(
Jeez doesn't this go for humans too? If someone's gonna startle me during my deep sleep cycle...you bloody well hope I get agressive. Jus tinstinct to protect yourself, as sleeping is the ultimate place of vulnerability.
Felt I needed to make the video after reading several posts of people being bitten after waking their hound up. Some could have been avoided. One person did comment that they thought my advice was terrible, but I stand by my tips to be better safe than sorry. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
@magnusgreyhound the shelter said he didn't do well in a crate and I really needed a dog for security and feeling safe so I feel that might make my anxiety worse. I bought dog beds etc. Even if I try making my bed he gets on it and won't move. If I try to move him he growls.
Sounds like a bit of resource guarding as well. You may have to bribe him to go to his bed, rather than yours. There is a training technique where you drop small treats on there bed to make them go there. You then drop a treat every 10 seconds then spread it out to every 20 and then 30 then you build up to every minute. The idea is to make the dog want to go to there bed as that is were the good stuff happens. We used a crate with Magnus and had it all cushy for him. We did not shut the door as he did not like it but he had his place to go out of the way of any disturbances. It worked for Magnus. Now we no longer use the crate and Magnus has his bed on the floor next to our bed and he is no longer reactive. Hope this helps

We definitely have two characters. My nickname for the two of them is thunder and lighting.
Great video. Really good advice.
Thank you!
Love your two fur babies
Thanks for watching
My 13 yr old greyhound just suddenly passed away last week, but the rule in our house was when she was on her bed don't touch her even if she is awake, a few times she had growled at me and my 12 yr old son for patting her when she was awake on her bed and she didn't want to be patted or touched, she was a serious grumpy old girl.
Sorry for your loss. They are such special dogs
Magnus is very good with his commands! My boy is a bit like Scout and trys to prompt me for a walk.
Thanks for sharing your story.
Again a great video!
Now I also understand the same saying in Dutch (never wake up a sleeping dog)
Thanks for watching. Glad you like the video.
OMG Scout the shoe thief! 😂😂
Always stealing the shoes throughout the day.
C'est super de voir ça. Ce st des chiens heureux adorables aussi ☺

Lovely dogs.
Thanks for your kind words
Love these dogs! Great info!
Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment. Glad you like the video.
I will see what I can do.
I'm just the same, so I show all dogs the same respect when they're asleep
wise words
Great advice. Wonderful vid😍🐾
Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment. Glad you like the video.
Thanks for sharing your story. They are great dogs and worth our patience.
Great as ever....
Thanks for watching
My son crept into my room one Hallowe'en night with a hideous over the head mask on he'd bought from the supermarket
I was asleep, and son was low down next to my face...I was half asleep clawing at this hideous thing, and he was saying ''Mum! Mum! it's me!! ..I think I had ''Sleep startle!'' 😂
I’ve had the exact same issue, it’s so hard not letting them come up for a snuggle. But I feel like I’m setting them up to fail by allowing it :(
Glad the video helped.
Magnus runs in his sleep alot. Scout very rarely.
when i adopted my greyhound luna she was never raced but had two failed adoptions due to barking anxiety and she had to go on two ferry,s to get to me so naturally she suffered with sleep startling / aggression for the first few months or so but now 9 months down the line the aggression side of the sleep startling has gone and now she just jumps up startled as if to say hey whats going on and then i use a gentle voice and stroke her and she goes straight back to sleep she likes to cuddle into me on the bed but sometimes the slightest move i make startles her and iv learned to stroke her gently before i move and it helps stop her getting startled
Thanks for sharing your story.
Mine suffers very badly from this, your not wrong about them looking awake and not being so. None of my previous ones have had it so it was a bit of a shock, special with the growling and snapping (also biting on occasion). I'll try some of your tips, thanks!
Thanks for watching and sharing your experience it
Hey
We have a dog named Happy and he is about to be 1 year old.
@@magnusgreyhound Thanks That helps :)
I just want to ask one thing. Did your Greyhounds not make the worst smells ever after eating the cream? My Lurcher would empty an entire house with the smells if i gave him even HALF the amount your dogs had lol
You have to beautiful dogs there, going to be adopting one myself next year once mine has got fully matured
Our two generally are not too bad with gas. It is very rare for us to smell any bad gases from them.
Just curious but does Magnus or Scout ever dream as in make lip fluttering noises sort of thing
They do
My uncle and aunts greyhound Koora does it as well I was dog sitting last night and she was doing it I was laughing so much 🤣
I always thought (hoped) that greyhounds lived with families but got exercised more than a usual pet dog
Although they are fast, they do not need much walking. they do like to run; but it only lasts a couple of minutes then it is back to napping.
@@magnusgreyhound I was talking about when they are racing. I had no idea that they lived in such harsh conditions😐😐
Wake him up with a chunk of cheese !!
Thanks for watching.
What would you suggest for a chihuahua who wants to sleep with you... need to know since I am pretty sure she has night terrors
Sorry I can't help, but I think there must be chihuahua forums if u Google it-hope this helps
you would need to try and desensitise her to being touched whilst sleeping. very slow process.
usain bolt dog version
For sure!
My whippet has the same problem

My 13 year old greyhound has gotten worse with sleep startles as she’s aged. You can tell she feels bad once she realizes there’s no reason to be scared :(
I feel bad for them when they suffer from sleep startle.
Mel. I suggest if you are aggressive and lash out at being woken up then maybe you should think about talking to someone.
Walkies now or the shoe gets it. :D
Exactly

My dog is 5 and adopted 5 months ago... he bites me every night so much that im watching this at 3am from the couch 😅
Do you have a crate or dedicated dog bed space?
@magnusgreyhound the shelter said he didn't do well in a crate and I really needed a dog for security and feeling safe so I feel that might make my anxiety worse. I bought dog beds etc. Even if I try making my bed he gets on it and won't move. If I try to move him he growls.
@magnusgreyhound he's fine on the couch if I touch him etc.
Presumably one dog knows not to wake the other ?
Scout does not have sleep startle. Magnus is doing a lot better with his.

Great video spoilt by ads in the middle.
Didn't realise there was an advert. I will try and remove it if I can.
This is because you have the free version of UA-cam. If you purchase Premium, the ads disappear.
