    Actually there have been even more engine changes. Due to destroyed catenary between Hodonín and Břeclav in the Czech republic caused by tornado at the end of June, trains between Hodonín and Břeclav are hauled by Brejlovec diesel loco. You can see some tornado effects - temporary blue roofs - after 14:00.

    14:00 You probably didn't even noticed, that the train was hauled by diesel locomotive between Hodonín and Břeclav, because of catenary and track damage caused by destructive tornado, which also destroyed several villages in the area. Btw you should know, that tornado is extremely rare in this part of Europe

    I had similar situation years ago - TLK train got stuck in the heat of the summer, for 3 hours, no A/C of course, in the middle of nowhere. Some people left the train with a radio and made a tiny disco next to the track. One guy went to the nearest shop, bought some bottles of beer and been giving them for free (I got one!). We were also getting bottles of water from conductors - my neighbor and I went on a quest to the front of the train, to bring one bottle for an old lady who felt unwell due the heat.
    It was a bit annoying at first, but it the end it's a really good memory. And the best beer I ever had!

    Interesting thing - in time 14:00 to 14:11 you were passing through damaged Czech villages, which were hit by a tornado. It is why it looks so strange. An important note is that strong tornados are not common in Czechia, so it is like a historic disaster for Czechs.

    PKP doesn't allow the use of showers because of Covid. I travelled in standard compartment, and the communal shower was closed.
    Yes, the very hard bed was what made that sleeping car "unimpressive" for me. And the fact you cannot make complete darkness in the compartment - there are those little lights on some buttons, right next to your head when you're sleeping. The ride comfort is also not the best, these cars could be quite shaky. Very disappointing, considering the fact they were built for an international connection to Brussels/Amsterdam originally and they are almost the same age as Siemens' Comfortline sleepers of NJ, which are far far superior. The positive sides though: the compartments on PKP sleepers are bigger and the shower compartment in Deluxe is much bigger than on NJ.
    I think PKP handled the situation with train derailment very good actually. They arranged a replacement train to Katowice, on DB for example it would only be: "Zug fällt leider ersatzlos aus". Sadly, another problem came in form of a catenary issue.
    The 3,5 h delay is not so bad actually. I had 7h delay on Nightjet from Zürich to Vienna, because of flooding we had to wait in Innsbruck for a loooong time...

    Unfortunately it's true, Polish sleeping trains have horribly uncomfortable beds, it's like laying down on a concrete slab, not a bed. They used to be much better in the eighties and nineties when sleeping cars had true spring mattresses and were very comfy. After that PKP went for cheaper alternatives and yet they charge exorbitant ticket prices for sleeping compartments. It's simply not worth the money...

      That's weird, when I took the train I did find the mattress to be hard but it wasn't painful - more like a futon.
      Also, when I booked my train I only paid 50€, no idea why the trip was this expensive. Ah and the sleeper from Berlin also has different beds, they're much more comfortable but they're more like a couch

    We had a similar situation in Spain in the 1980s. Stranded for 4 hours in the middle of nowhere. Everyone got outside and it turned into a big international picknick at the railroadside in a beautiful sunset. This kind of delays bring people together and make the best travel experiences 😊

    • @osasunaitor
      @osasunaitor 2 роки тому

      Lol, as a Spaniard I'm not surprised... we fail miserably at everything, especially railways. Incidents like this still happen regularly, except that nowadays you wouldn't be allowed to exit the train and you would have to remain inside without AC/heating, electricity, food or even information. Add to it that the toilet would likely be clogged and the windows obstructed with graffiti.
      I'm glad you enjoyed that one experience, but for those of us living here this kind of stuff is not enjoyable at all.

      Meanwhile when I was in Kyoto the timetables weren't unreliable, but 1 that I came across was a bit hard to read, as it listed in chronological order the west-bound _Shinkansen_ services , but the order is based on when the train services depart their origin station (Tokyo), not when they arrive in Kyoto. & some services are express while others are local, so you have some of the former leave Tokyo later than the latter, but overtake them mid-way & thus reach Kyoto before them instead

    And one more thing. You mention "Jan Kiepura". He was a Polish singer and... he used to spend his holidays as a child in my village. And one day, when he was famous, he was travelling the first Polish high-speed train called "Luxtorpeda". And it was of course on the Warsaw-Vienna line! And people knew about it and went to wave at him. And the "Luxtorpeda" stopped in our village, but not on the platform, cause it want too fast. And people greeted him. I made an audiobook with this story, told by one old guy from my village.

When I travelled regularly on the Warsaw-Toruń route almost every time the type of carriages was downgraded, and seat numbers on the tickets did not match those on the train, causing endless passenger confusion. But no information from PKP. There was nowhere to put my bike (i paid for the bike ticket) and PKP don't care. When that happened on TGV, we were put in first-class and a special place for bikes was found.
