A soul shattering existential crisis DC comics style. Alan Moore was a genius to flip the origin on its ear. The man transformed into a plant becomes a plant that thinks it's a man. The anatomy lesson is one of the best swamp thing stories and was handled very well. In the comic the creature everyone thought was Alec Holland suffers a complete mental breakdown and becomes one with the plants until Abby is in danger and accepts his freedom from the burden of believing he is Alec Holland and gains access to the Green in a way he never did before. It's a crime this TV series was canceled before we could see him master his abilities completely. But he has every right to be called Alec Holland because essentially he is in mind and soul if not in body.
Man this is so brutal, in the comic Allec was frozen and pretty much unconcious during this process, he later learned what he does in this in scene reading the autopsy, this is so much more hearth breaking and painful.
It kind of brings up an interesting point. Is it the memories, the consciousness that makes the man or is the body? Physically, he isn’t Alec Holland but in a way, he carries on his soul through Swamp Thing.
In the comics they state that the formula that Holland had on him when he died in the swamp caused them to consume him and acquire his memories. The organism that inherited them lied to itself and constructed an anatomy for itself that more closely resembled a human, thus creating Swamp Thing.

It could also explain why up to this point we had not seen Swamp thing use any scientific knowledge that is typical of a man of Alec Holland's intelligence. The consciousness that was absorbed by the plants is it best a copy of that intellect and it was not translated completely triggered yes he is intelligent, but we have not seen him attempt anything scientific up until this point. It could've been rationalized as his senses being adult at a certain point, as if his mind only retained 75% of its original intellectual levels. But this makes sense. This was handled very badly by Warner bro’s. They are the ones to blame for this. They had 3 - 13ep already perfectly written. The cast was amazing. The crew went about and beyond with the sets etc. their use of practical effects as much as possible and CG only when needed. Even though we only got 10 eps instead of 13 for this series and nothing else. I look at is as a 10 hour bad ass swamp thing movie.

For people asking why did it get cancelled, I believe this was a Dc Universe streaming service exclusive show, unfortunately the service did not do well so they were economically forced to stop the streaming service and the rights to the shows went to either HBO Max or CW...would've loved if it had gone to HBO Max because they probably would've continued it while still maintaining that made the show great. I was disappointed when CW got it because CW ruin everything, so in a way...I'm thankful CW never did anything with the show but I do wish HBO one day does

I have to applaud the special effects team on swamp thing. The vegetation as his organs is AMAZING
