With due respect to all of his other creations, both the films and the teledramas taken together, this teledrama "Kadulla" happens to be by far the best to come from the late veteran Dharmasena Pathiraja. Just about every aspect of it; the plot/script, the dialogues, the selection of the actors for the particular roles and the impeccable or the near-impeccable acting by almost all of them (personally I don't see any noticeable weak link there, any, even among the sub-characters/sub-roles, which is a very rare occurrence/quality among the productions here in Sri Lanka even to this day), the selection/creation of the background & costumes matching the historical era depicted by the plot, and the ultimate direction combining all these aspects into a finished product in the end, seems to have been curated almost perfectly to the minute details. Given that no weakness is seen even today, after 25+ years of its very first telecast (if my memory serves me right, this had been first telecasted in 1991/92), this is truly remarkable. Most definitely, "Kadulla" would go down in the history as the best audio-visual creation to come from Sri Lanka. To this day, I don't see any competitor whatsoever there in that regard. The teledramas "Gamperaliya" (if I'm not mistaken, directed by Bertram Nihal), "Pitagam Kaarayo" (directed by Thissa Abeysekara), "Charitha Thunak" (if I'm not mistaken, directed by Parakrama Niriella), etc. which represented pretty much the same era of television/teledramas in Sri Lanka (from the tail end of '80s to mid '90s), too had been quite superb in terms of overall quality. The teledramas "Koombiyo", "Sulanga Matha Mohothak", "Rathu Ahasa", "Vibhaga Fail", "Sahodaraya", "Ira Awara", etc. which were telecasted more recently had been quite impressive too. We have had a track record quite good films too, true, the most notable examples of them being "Gamperaliya", Yuganthaya", "Nidhanaya", "Awaragira" (all four directed by Lester James Pieris), "Hansa Wilak" (directed by Dharmasiri Bandaranayake), "Dadayama" (directed by Wasantha Obesekara), "Ira Mediyama", "Pavuru Walalu", "Purahanda Kaluwara" (all three directed by Prasanna Withanage), "Kulageya", "Seilama", "Kinihiriya Mal" (all three directed by H.D. Premarathna), "Aswesuma" (directed by Benett Rathnayake), etc.. All these would form an impressive list, true. But, none of them would match this masterpiece "Kadulla" in terms of the overall quality, for sure. To me, even the veteran Dharmasena Pathiraja himself couldn't touch the same level of greatness in any of his other creations including his more subsequent creations until his demise, so this had been quite apparently the pinnacle of him too. The last but not the least, one must never forget the person who provided the script; Thilak Jayarathna. If not for his wonderful & impeccable script, we would never have seen this masterpiece, for sure. Just prior to this, I do remember there had been another good teledrama "Naandunana Puththu" ("Unknown Sons") which depicted the initial era of socialist campaigns here in Ceylon (as it was known by then), for which he had provided the script. If my memory serves me right, it had come slightly before "Kadulla", but the two overlapped, telecasted in ITN as opposed to "Kadulla" which was telecasted in "National TV" ("Jathika Rupavahini"). The teledramas like "Kadulla" do take us back in the memory lane to our childhood; an era where teledramas were seriously considered as a means of artistic, cinematic and profound expression unlike now where almost 90% of them (may not be all, but the vast majority of them) have diluted it to be a medium of nothing but superficial soap-opera. Now, it's only very rarely we do come across an impressive creation here despite the luxury of having access to all the technological advancements. Both the present-day directors (may not be all, but the vast majority of them) and the channels alike (then again, the vast majority of them, if not all) are to be blamed in that regard.
Do you mean the teledrama "Apaharanaya" ("ua-cam.com/video/bY7Vl5VEz4I/v-deo.html") which was originally telecast on the National TV channel ("Jathika Rupavahini") in 1990s ?. Both Cletus Mendis and Gayathri Dias (in her youth) acted there too. I'm not sure if it was re-telecast on Swarnavahini recently ....
