- Straight Eight is a regular productive slicing cucumber and winner of the All-America Selections Award in 1935. It is quite fun to grow and makes a pretty good regular cucumber. While it is very straight, crisp and productive, the flesh is a little sappy and has the typical American slicer "slightly bitter" taste that most grocery customers are used to in a cucumber.
First year growing these, thanks for the insight.
Do straight 8 cucumbers need to be pollinated? Mine are starting to flower (yes already) and most look like male flowers (I don't see any fruit at the base). I don't seem to be able to find any consistent information. Thank you.
Good Morning. Straight Eight is a monoecious cucumber variety, meaning that it produces male fruit on a separate flower from the female flower. The majority of traditional cucumber varieties are monoecious. Generally, the male flowers will begin appearing 2-3 weeks before the female flowers do and in greater numbers. If a gardener would like to try a variety that does not require pollination, then she would grow a parthenocarpic cucumber variety. These set fruit (but not seed) without pollination.
Thank you so very much! I have some sweet success that are parthenocarpic, but everything I was finding on these Straight Eight cucumbers were not consistent with the information. I appreciate your information. Thank you again! @@CucumberShop
