- So remember that Nexara we seeded into the grass this spring? Well it's time to start cutting it down and get this harvest season started!
Mike bought a used John Deere D450 swather last winter and he's excited to sharpen his swathing skills! 😆

For those wondering, swathing allows crop to cure down faster. Some crops like canola, flax, or oats the seed tends to be dry well before the rest if the plant, and you do not want to run green material through a combine or you risk bad weather by letting it stand for longer. Swathers cost money like anything else, but so does seed on the ground from shelling out from the weather.
A lot would dessicate a crop instead with spray in today's modern age, but that's where issues can arise with chemical traces or some companies will simply reject the grain.
I find it interesting that here in North Dakota, they still straight cut canola. Is the growing season just long enough here that swathing isn't necessarily the best way?
Better explanation than google
Thanks !!! #NotaFarmer
😆
So do you pick it up with a forage wagon and sell it like a combined crop or do you bale it and sell it as canola bales? (Sorry for the dumb question just trying to learn something new)
Thank you for explaining that. Came straight to the comments for it. My family doesn't swath anything its all stripper heads and corn heads
Thank you cause i was gonna ask the next time i saw a swather video. Makes more sense to me now
I miss the days on the farm where we could see the sun sitting and just see the open plains sparkle now I live in a city in a damn apartment
Not going to lie…pretty pumped to see a bumper crop get pushed through the combine
Big fan of the “Shad Potter” canola Lol.
I wasn´t here for quite a longe time, but hey....mad mike is still that wild guy witch drives with his case sprayer on ice over his fields and party hard like there is no tomorrow. Great to see u and your wife gets a little healthy new farmhand on this planet....and works up north....great....
I am now watching over 3 hours of your content ... men i need a ticket to the north 🤣
Glad to see a good crop coming in up north after the drought stuff down south!👍. Learn a lot from this Channel thanks.
Yes, my uncle's farms in that area also had a good harvest.
Nice looking canola u r swathing Mike
Finally Mike, you have an actual crop. Probably more in one round in this field than the whole field back home. 😅
Man I wish I have that finger roller when I was swathing canola!! Thanks for the video Mike!!!
It sure makes a difference! 🙂
After watching you harvest thousands of acres of almost barren land down south I am surprised your were not laughing hysterically as you swathed that canola. HOLY CRAP! It’s so thick and it’s definitely going to be a bumper crop! Glad that the gamble to spread out your operation is paying off!
Great video Mike
Awesome looking swather Mike
Hope your having a good time with our swather
Sure am! 🙂
Thanks for inspiring me to take a few more risks on our farm Mike, love your optimism and your always up for a new challenge/idea
All the cleaning is really making a difference. Hope the new bins are ready for harvest. ua-cam.com/video/cAbaru-diBA/v-deo.html
Dude, I am beyond excited to watch you cut an actual crop!!! 12-pack and popcorn here I come…may have to watch this a few times!!
It is always a great pleasure to see your videos
Looking like an awesome crop Mike. Just what you needed!
THANK YOU MIKE
Very interesting to see the difference between worked up land and direct seeding! Looking forward to see the actual yield differences, if any. 🤔Good luck with the harvesting weather, canola seems to be a tricky one. 👍
Finally a crop to make the X9 grunt 😜
"I already aired up this main Tyr... WOOOAOAAOAOAOAAAAAH OKAY" 😂😂😂😂 I've had many of those moments
Looks like a fantastic crop! What a contrast from crops on the south farm.
Blessings to you and your family!
I always look forward to swathing. One of my favorite jobs on the farm. Your swather is huge!!
Does anyone here feel the joy of seeing a bountiful harvest?
That looks as good as we grow here in Northamptonshire, UK.
There is never a wrong way to open a field of canola buddy. Just put er through the combines any what way you wish!! 👌👌
At last a crop that’s worth harvesting. Hope the rest of the fields are as good as this one
Love the way you can drive down the highway like that and only meet a couple of vehicles 🤣😮
"Thats a massive swath back there" That's what she said. 😂
love these videos
We made the hole wider on our d450s. We also increased belt tension and can now swath heavy canola in the rain with zero slippage.
The John deere A400 uses the honeybee header and it has a wider opening with no need for the optimizer. But its great to see a good looking crop for you
Looks like a decent crop!
It was set a side land of course it's going to grow a good crop that type of land always does! Looks like that canola is going to be your best crop to harvest this year!
All depends on how much rain, if any, it gets.
Good luck 👍👍
Looking like a good crop
@Philip Fleming Hi am Cindy Smith, how are you doing? Hope we can be friends..
Thanks for the vid Mike. We call them windrowers over here in aus
we always plowed or chiseled our crops rain was the only thing that stopped it from being good like yours, maybe a break of the ground may be good let that moisture in a bit, great vid 👍👍👍👍👍👍🌾🌾🌾🌾🌾🌾🌾🌾
What a nice machine. Well, anythi deer is awesome really.
Gotta give him credit for filming while driving
Dvoufázová sklizeň je asi budoucnost všech farmářů. God bless Mike.
Definitely not the future of all farming as there are crops that would not benefit at all from it. It’s also been a thing for a long time.
Mike your field is turning by the minute, little less talk little more action.
We will finish harvest 22 today .. always a nice feeling.
You should see the liberty, it's nearly ripe and swathing it.. 🤦🏻♂️ Should have started sooner I guess, and have been plagued with some swather break downs
Compared with your previous years shenanigans I'd say you're doing real well Mike, remember the tale of the tortoise & the hare, you'll get there when the work is done, we're all routing for you my friend!🤑😊🇬🇧
Good vid
You can tell Mike's focused because he makes significantly less commentary 😂
Mike, c'mon, doing 360's on highway would still keep you on your merry way 😁
Just a bit more pumped with adrenaline (or dopamine) like an daredevil.
I believe you bought that swather from my buddy haha
Magnifique vidéo et le tracteur et et couper est bien équipés
Look at that crop
Need Astynn, Chapel, and Ernie...all 3 to make an appearance!
Have seen a crop like that for years eh Mike??😲😉🤔👏🇨🇦
Boy mike you will sure be able to test the x9 at the north farm!
Hopefully Ashtyn can make an on camera appearance operating the swather at some point this fall
Probably not.
Hi Gavin, we are beginning to worry that you might be developing an Ashtyn fixation my friend, now Mike may appear a friendly happy go lucky type of fellow, but I've been told if you mess with his woman he ain't afraid to go back to jail again, so tread carefully is my advice. 😍😂😂😂
🤨
@@tigerbatman7881 lmao how would you know
If she starts swathing we won’t get videos cuz mike will be looking after chapel and unable to run along side fast enough 😂
Mike you need to create a map of your farm for Farming Simulator 22. I would love to see it.
I remember my swathing days, like driving a shopping trolley 😂😂, good old days.
That windshield wiper would drive me crazy
If that’s what you’re focused on while operating, you’re not doing your job.
@@mikeznel6048 be hard not to
Funny how the crop grows when it rains eh!!
Here I thought my 35 ft swath was big!
Yummy Canada oil low acid, so natural and good
The canola looks pretty good.gkad you are getting some money making crops.
The only swather I’ve driven down the road that’s not sketchy is a macdon with the dual direction
Looks like your northern X9 will have to work quite a lot harder than your southern one. 😁
He said Shad Potter.... did you mean pod shatter? Lol
I was crying laughing when he went awol on the road 😂😂😂
Saskatchewan is awesome. Ride your Sled (snowmobile) ride down to the Gas Station, no one cares. Do some ditchbangin’. If you like Sleds or ATV’s, Saskatchewan is your place.
Hopefully get to see you in a red combine yet.
The comments.... 🤦. Happy harvesting Mike.
Sooo, theoretically, if you had the GPS and auto steer on, you could send your swather home without you.😂 Would be fun to see.😆
we call them wind rowers here in Australia
This guy's allowance must be extraordinary.
He works for his money
Looks like the header needs a pea auger to keep the canola down and in contact with the canvas.
❤️⚒️
You may find tillage yields better in that soil yes. No till the farther north you go does’t usually go well.
finally some crop
And here the canola is out for the next year
Watch out for any pesky 'shods pattering' Mike, I'm sure you'll be just fine.
How many days do you think it will have to lay to cure. Fall weather can be an issue in that respect. Most around my country burn it down with Roundup or similar products then take it straight
I wonder what are the benefits of swapping the grain first versus just combined it
can't wait to see the x9 finally munching on some real material volume. Hope it is a bumper crop for you to make up for the poor crops down south
Is it easier to harvest canola after swathing it or easier to harvest it standing
Shad potter 😂
When do we get to see the 616R sprayers?
Your biggest money maker will be the far north farm
Wow, can you ever hear the hydraulics whine in that thing.
40" swath, hope it does not rain.
Are the swather heads interchangeable with the combine heads?
How high do you cut canola ? I leave my at 14 16 inches.
Doing a 360 @ 20+ mph would be quite a ride, you’d have a different Colour Machine… either 💩 or 🩸, but you’d be finished for Fair Rides. 😂
And he'd be going the same direction not the other way like he said!
@@lynwessel2471
lol. Yeah 'shad potter'
Mike, I have a question? What's shad potter?
Great to see you getting a good crop.
Does that 40ft header flex like the combine header?
Thanks
@John Davidson Hi am Cindy Smith, how are you doing? Hope we can be friends..
Bet that’s a shock to your system , there’s actually a crop going through the machine
🔥👊🔥🏍⚙️🔨🚜
Mike how many acres are you running at the north farm ?
How many acres at the North Farm?
Hit the float button twice and change ur float offset
Also speed up ur canvas and reel
I have had alot trouble with sensor on the right side, must be a broken wire somewhere.
So Mike I have a question:
It seems like your swather was already struggling with the amount of canola.
So how would you swath a field with a great crop?
With a combine you could just drive slower. But if I am not mistaken that wouldn't work with a swather.
So how do you swath if the swath gets larger than the "tunnel" underneath the swather?
Overlapping would help
A couple of options spring to mind, initially take a smaller cut, with Mike's 40ft head just cut 30ft so the crop isn't too thick to exit the head & if this was the case across the whole field maybe consider trading the 40ft for a 30ft head, also decrease your speed so as not to over feed the head.😊🇬🇧
why cant you drive slower? non farmer here just wondering
@@Erik-ce3hq I am also a non farmer, so pure speculation:
The crop has to go somewhere.
I assume that the swath can only become so big, until it no longer has a place to go (the space underneath the swather is limited).
That's what I was wondering and why I wrote the question :)
@@Jehty_ yeah but if you slow down the amount of crop going through the header becomes less so the space under the swather shouldnt be a problem?
You should have got a green Macdon
How close to rosthern are your North farms
Is the massey 760 going to harvest this season?
13:23 doesnt it get plugged with so many in the feeder?
Nope
What difference does swahting make? In Europe we put it straight in the combine. Like your barley .
It's he fastest way of maturing the crop, gets harvest going
So, how do you gather this up then
Is it faster to sawth it and then combine or what's the deal with splitting the harvest process? Also don't You loose a lot of crop this way - pods opening?
Can’t wait for the plant to die and dry down naturally. Pod shatter will increase each day and it’s crunch time this far north. It can start snowing any day
@@clearskiesranch1362 thanks for great explenation!
