I agree. Im not black and I’ve struggled with this for years. I finally saw some improvements when I started taking care of the ends. It took me almost two years to get my length where it is. Diet has a huge role as well. Balance is key!
13:30 the math ain't mathing on that, and when you look at the study it seems pretty obvious that it wasn't well controlled and measured. When you recognize that length RETENTION is much more difficult not only to do, but to recognize as is happening in 4c fine strands. Adding to that that strangely sometimes folks in these studies do NOT understand shrinkage and instead measure from the scalp to the top of the hair WITHOUT STRETCHING HAIR OUT. TBH i cannot remember which exact flaws were in this particular study, but the math doesn't seem to line up with reality. If it WAS the case that black hair only grew 0.2 inches per month... that would mean that black hair only grows 2.4 inches PER YEAR. A trim is about half an inch. So by her own data, it would take you half a lifetime to get mid back length hair, considering you're growing only 2.5 inches PER YEAR and then trimming off an inch a year. Not only that, but most of us have irrefutable proof in our own heads experience that this isn't true. Think about the creamy cr@ck. How often did you need to retouch. Think about this objectively. Look at a ruler. This data is saying that at 2 months you would still not have even half an inch of new grow. It would take 2.5 months for you to get HALF AN INCH of new growth. As a locked girlie, it has proven to me over and over how length RETENTION and growth are not the same thing. Many of the other things this woman has said have been so spot on that i honestly can't believe she reported that flawed study as factual when even her own objective experience doesn't support that number.
When I was little, it was nothing to see little black girls with long thick ponytails. Moms really just used grease and water. As a teen, girls had relaxed hair with it cut short at the top long in the back. I think now we use too many products and they are adding fake hair way too young. Just stop.
I think Asians hair generally grows faster cause majority of them have healthy diets full of veggies and herbs. And if we ate more like that we’d probably see more than 0.2 a month
Actually, it’s because their hair is typically straight. Straight hair grows at the same rate as curly but looks longer because it doesn’t have any shrinkage. BTW, their diet is the exact same as ours. They eat just as much processed foods that we do. I lived in China for several years.
Nope, this isn't fully true. Asian hair is stronger than Black or White hair. I have had stylists tell me that Asian hair is like rope and strong AF. This is why when it's made into weave hair it can take so much processing to mimick a wide variety of textures. They have better retention because of this. Curly hair is more fragile especially if the individual strands are fine as opposed to coarse or medium.
Ppl always ask me what do i use on my hair. My answer is always the same, all i do is LEAVE IT ALONE while keeping it moisturized. I save a shit load of money staying out a beauticians chair and all i gotta do is flat iron my hair to leave the house. U will get the same reaction with long natural as keeping up wit the popn hair styles (which be gorgeous). Not knocking anything but it works for me. Im gonna try the product line she suggested, and see how it goes. Our hair dont fall in line with every product tho, it likes what it likes. Good luck ladies ❤
Myth 7 hurt ngl... Less than a quarter inch per month on average?? Tbh idk how true that is because my own hair has grown 1.5 inches in about 3 months time..
The best people to ask how to retain the most length are other people who have done it. That’s how I went from a lifetime plateau of shoulder to armpit length to hip length, and with greater density to boot. 💯 That’s not to say I don’t listen to or take into consideration the advice of professional trichologists, dermatologists, and cosmetic chemists. 🥰 All of this plus trial and error, consistency, critical thinking, and common sense have helped me immensely. 🥰
This is so true! The best hair advice i got was from the GlamTwinz back in the day. The best advice I can give to Black women is to moisturized your hair EVERY SINGLE day. Conditioner, water throughout the strands and oil the ends. Do not let your hair get dry and crunchy. Do not wear hairstyles that don’t allow you to moisturized your hair everyday like full closure sew ins and silk presses. Wear protective hairstyles. Twists, braids, buns, glueless wigs etc. Trim your ends every 4-6 months.
@@emilyavery5970: Same! I have to say I learned the most from them as well, especially from their old “top ten tips” videos. They helped open my eyes to what natural Afro-textured hair really needs.
I am peeking at waist length hair with a twice a year relaxer and I believe in science not anecdotal evidence. I do not use "protective styles", I will put it in a bun or wrap it for the day and throw on a cute hat. I use products that have the ingredients that work me, moisturizer everything with hydrolyzed protein and I handle my hair with serious care. I don't rush with a comb or a brush, wash it in quarters, keep it covered for sleeping and I stay on top of the ends, the oldest hair with trims and light oil.
I had an easier time retaining length when I was relaxed and had color. I only relaxed 3-4 times a year. Length retention as a natural has been a struggle! I didn't use a million products either. I had a reconstructing conditioner a shampoo and 1 styling products. Now I got 50-11 products for the time of year and level of humidity 😒🙄 You have a great hair regimen
Thanks for the video and the guest. It's always nice to learn more about our hair. I know when it comes to biotin derms have said it can interfere with some lab tests so folks should stop taking it several days before having any lab work done.
This was a very informative video! I do think sometimes we use a lot of products hoping it will fix the issue and not realizing it does more harm. Thanks for sharing 😊
The scalp should be clean and moisturized with liquid. The ends should be trimmed and moisturized with water-based product then sealed and protected with oil and/butter. That's how I did mine regularly every 1 to 2 weeks and got growth and retention after 2 months.
loveeeeeee seeing a video from one of my favs on a Sunday. yall had me thinking i wasn't gonna be fed but then a couple of yall popped up i was SO HAPPY. i think this is the interview you mentioned on the other channels vlog, i thought it had already come out but yayyyy
There's a lot that could have been discussed around the porosity issue and how to determine. If that was done, then the products to use based on your porosity would be helpful in the hair growth process. The Pantene Gold Series products she mentioned are not even familiar to me.
Omg the towel!!😂😂😂😂 LOVED this video, especially the format of the interview - just straight to the point! I also appreciated Dr Wilkerson mentioning effective products even if they weren't P&G. People still relax their hair? I must be living under a rock!😮
LOL---thank you! Listen, a lot of people still do. Don't be surprised if you see me slide on camera post creamy crack...lol. I have been thinking about going back 🫣
Are there any none P&G products one could use? A black own brand or a more natural brand? P&G have too many environmental issues one shouldn't get behind.... asking for a friend 😁
I also like Mane Choice's line for type 4 hair, SheaMoisture Manuka Honey line, and I was bout to rattle off some more but I turned the bottle around and they're also P&G lol.
Also we have a video with a derm who specializes in hair loss who mentioned some moisturizer options in this video: ua-cam.com/video/p7C_U1SWt1M/v-deo.html
@arewahaircaretv8718 Do you flat iron your hair every day and workout? That wouldn't work for me. For now I will stick with braids and twists. Thank you.
I straighten mine once a month with just a blow dryer or silk press once a month. When I workout I pull it back in a bun with a satin scrunchie put a satin edge scarf on and my nike dri fit hat on top. When I’m done working out I put on a scarf for at least an hour or 2 to make sure my hair is fully dry and my hair stays pretty straight

The word that’s not being used enough is retention. We all grow hair, it’s retaining the old hair that’s the problem.

How can we wear straight natural hair without a weave, wig, or relaxer? Who ever finds that answer will be a billionaire😂
