Black American women (which I am one of with 4c hair, are the only community of women who have access to everything that we need for our hair but consistently try to get out of doing something to it everyday. Women who have access to water that are in industrialized countries wash their hair daily, which means they have to clean and massage their scalp and they also apply almost always a silicone based condition. That is like washing your face and applying a great moisturizer daily. I know that women with particular hair types should not or can not wash daily but we as women who have access have to get out of the mindset of doing nothing to our hair for days and weeks at a time. Even if that daily something is keeping it covered in a satin head wrap, doing the green house method, massaging the scalp, doing the inversion method. Washing it weekly with a deep conditioner and hot oil treatment. As much as we say we love our hair and as much as we say we want it down our backs, we don't seem to want to do much to it that would warrant those results, myself included. I have definitely started doing something hair related daily but it was a long time coming. Waiting too long to re-moisturize. Keeping protective styles in for too long. Not taking care of my scalp no issues with my scalp thank goodness, but still). I am now no longer tender headed because I care for my scalp, especially at the crown. Just thought that I would share that because around the world women do very ritualistic things with their hair thus why it is so healthy as strong. I hope that as we learn more about our own hair it becomes an act of self love and pampering even if and especially because it does take a lot and take all day. The oils and herbs with Ayurveda, the rice water and more with Asia, the chebe with Chad and many more. Most women with 1 and 2 type hair literally wash, massage and condition DAILY. We think of them doing that because their hair is very oily and it would become sticky and a mess, but look what happens to our hair when we DON'T do enough. We must learn to embrace our hair care practices instead of shunning them (myself included). Something should be done daily. Thank you for all your hard work, research, videos and interviews. They are truly appreciated. Take care!
@Nuni Nuninu This was awesome to read, I agree as a black women with 4c hair instead of saying I wish I had someone else's hair texture or it's too much work (which it is) I need to learn how to take care of my own and love it.
what oils and moisturizers should i used for dreadlocks as well as something to grow back breakage on the sides. Also should I wrap my hair w/ a satin or silk scarf? Thank you.
I think the doc missed out an extremely vital part about hair moisturization, as a matter of fact I believe this is far more important than hair density. Hair porosity. I have high density, thick coarse 4b hair. I cannot use thick butters and creams. I have to use liquids or gel type creams. That's because I have low porosity hair. If I use heavier creams I have to use heat to open my hair pores. I use As I Am castor oil water or Creme of nature Argan Oil as my liquid.Mielle leave in conditioner or As I Am leave in and Cantu custard. I don't use oils on my hair anymore only my scalp. I also do not moisturize my hair everyday, sometimes once a week or less. I leave my hair alone. Winter is different though and this has worked for me. I would like to try more frequent moisturizing in the future with the leave in conditioners and see what that does but I've finally been able to see a change in my hair and it was nothing like the prescribed method of moisturizing. I almost loc'd my hair because of how frustrated I was. I'd daily moisturise exactly like this video said and my hair would dry out right after. I'm not discrediting her information but we have to try different things and see what works for our hair. The loc and lco can be used as a base to start but you may have to tweak it. I also live in NH and I noticed my hair dries out easier than when I was in FL. I used the OG LCO, even Crisco and that worked in FL but not in the north. Water hardness and softness also makes a difference. I also don't use any liquid on my loose hair, it tangles up too bad. If you take a look at my steps that work for my hair you'll see that it's NOTHING like the recommended steps. WATER TANGLES AND DRIES OUT MY HAIR, I kid you not. No matter what I do. What really helped me was prayer. I was at my last and God granted me the info I needed. I kept trying to do the methods everyone prescribed and my hair would just dry out. I finally after a deep prompting typed "I don't moisturize my hair with water" thinking I was crazy and I found a small set of videos that spoke about exactly what I was going through. If the LCO or LOC doesn't work, please try something else out of the box. Do not give up. Pray to God cause he does care about your hair. When I read that a woman's hair is her joy, in the Bible, I thought to myself that God must care about something as simple as hair, so I can pray to him for that and I did and he helped me. Thank God! Thank you Jesus, thank you Holy Spirit.
I love this because Im definitely one of those who has to use different methods than whats popular. Especially with this hard Texas water smh. It wrecks havoc on hair and skin here. I actually do well with thick creams and butters only after I steam, low porosity but my hair doesnt like to not be washed often. I do much better washing 4-6 times a week, but not using shampoo often. I sweat in my scalp alot and the salt buildup with make my scalp dry and itchy then if I put oil, its just buildup and itch central lol. its crazy how our hair can look similar but need to be taken care of sooo differently.
I agree, the Lord will give you what works for you. I created my own hair & body products & they are fabulous. Like so many others, when I 1st started my natural hair journey, I tried the newest trend, didn't give my hair time to see if if worked for me or not b4 I tried something new. I became frustrated... So coconut oil, olive oil & others don't work for me, but what the Holy Spirit showed me & how to put it together & apply...Oh Yeah! I think I only let 2 (maybe 3) people do my hair since I started my journey, when I decide to get a silk press & I let someone braid my hair. It may take me hours to do my 4c tight dense hair but I don't worry about someone brushing from the scalp down or just not as delicate as I am.. When others ask me what I use I always mention find what works for you.
@The Style and Beauty Doctor great. Bcus I have fine hair high density but thicker products work better on my hair. I usually don't get enough moisture from spray. But that Mielle leave in is BOMB 😍
We literally have the same type of 4b hair. Yes! Heavy butters do not work on me either. Shea butter just sits on my hair and make sit matte up and get stiff. I think the only butter I can get away with is cocoa butter. My hair loves castor, argan and avocado oil and I mostly use those on my scalp or strands and mostly keep my hair braided in the winter . I started using hair lotions like the design essential hair lotion and my hair never been softer. My hair thrives off more water based products as compared to heavy creams and I wish I realized this sooner. I also don’t moisture it daily as my hair would suck it up like nothing ever went on my head 😂🤣
I have 4c hair. If I neglect my scalp, then my scalp gets inflamed (burning, itching). I found that I need to “grease my scalp” regularly while stretching out my coils. I’ve tried using oils, but it’s not enough. I’m using old school SuperGro or Blue Magic on my scalp, and then using Crème of Nature twisting cream when twisting my hair. This combination really makes my scalp healthy.
Omg!! I’ve been avoiding using grease and my scalp has been scabbing and inflamed so badly I’ve been considering seeing dermatologist about it. When I was younger my hair was down my back and what was I using?? BLUE MAGIC AND ROYAL CROWN!! It wasn’t until I stepped away from those products trying to be like the UA-cam gurus that my hair stopped growing and my scalp started suffering because they said grease was “bad” I’m so glad you confirmed this for me! Thank so much for sharing! ❤
Old school methods WORK. I would wash my hair and put castor oil only and my hair was BEAUTIFUL. Then I started listening to "youtube experts " and my hair is not satisfactory.
THIS!! yes mam..i use old school Blue magic mixed with sulfer 8..NOTHING else works..i had to spend 1000 plus on new age products to find out the old stuff works for me
Going natural was a no for me, I found myself struggling and found my hair to be tangled and dry. I prefer straight blow dried hair or occasionally straightened with good amount of moisturizer. I also where braids alot and that has helped my hair growth so much. My hair is longer than it's ever been. Different things work for different people.
@@VANITYISFARE I was most of my life but haven't been in over a year. I just can't leave my hair naturally curly because it's just hard to keep up with so I prefer it to be straight with a blow dryer or occasionally straightened
The reason why I personally don't like Cantu products is because they don't work well with other products... after a whole day of washing, deep conditioning, and detangling, you don't want to have a bunch of white flakes on your hair. Your shirt will look like christmas on July 😆
Cantu has this synthetic smell that my olfactory hates! *Caveat* I'm highly sensitive to smells, especially very sweet ones (induce a headache or make me nauseous), musky/woody (gives me a stuffy throat), and sharp/cold smells (induce stuffy/runny nose for me)
You can use things like aloe Vera juice , glycerin and fenugreek . These things will help lock in moisture for a longer period of time. On average I moisturize my hair every two -three days. 4a- 4b
I just accept my genetics and hair growth speed. Most grow a full inch in 2 months. It takes me 4 months to get a full inch. No I'm gonna oil my scalp or take vitamins, as long as it still grows, I'm good ❤️🤗
Oiling or greasing is not an option for me due to my eczema ( keratosis Polaris). My scalp would be torn down to non-existent skull from the itch level. I leave aloe gel in my hair ( bottled ) for a half hour before wash for dandruff control. I still scratch scalp under running water. My hair is plenty moisturized afterwards.
I love this. The thing I would like to add is even if you have only so many predetermined follicles on your head, and this determines your max achievable thickness, your length you have more control over. Because when I look back as the doctor recommended, I always had hair that was fine and did not seem to grow much past shoulder length. I got my cosmetology degree and looking at clients, I saw less mechanical manipulation and more hydration can get you to your personal longest length. I stopped relaxing, brushing, combing, pulling, curling, blow drying and wore more natural braided style ( pulled back one braid). This way I grew my hair to past my hips.
I think because curly hair is very curly and shrinks up a lot it appears to grow slower. When curly hair is stretched out it can be longer than many straight hair people.
This is so true. I've been growing out the dyed ends of my hair, I cut it every 3-6 months. When I stretch it I'm always surprised that it's past my shoulders far.
Everybody's hair and hair goals are different, so there is no one right way, you just need to listen to your hair. For me it's best to just wash my hair every 2-4 days, keep my scalp clean and my hair from getting fully tangled.

I agree with your sentiments. I think most of us (4a's and up) make our routine/ritual more complex than necessary and it turns us away from maintaining ourselves the way we should. It also seems like older generations of Black women cared more about hair maintenance in a cleaner classier way. Most of the Black Hollywood women used to have beautiful short do's and styles. Now we are so obsessed about having hair down our backs we negate the essentials.
I think it’s a bit ignorant to just blame it on laziness or we just don’t want to do it. I feel like we ignore the fact that black ppl in general down to each strand on our head was made for community. Having access to all the product in the world is one aspect but when we’re divided as a community the care suffers. That’s the difference between here and the girls in Africa. We have so much info here and it overwhelms many. Not to mention the insane cost to figure out what ur hair likes. I’ve been natural for over 10 years now and I’m still figuring out what my hair wants. I can’t even get my hair braided some regular cornrows for less than 100$. That’s not normal no matter what anyone says the natural hair tax is very real and until we start to figure the system out it will be like this for a long time
Love this video. My hair gets dry very often. I never thought to moisturize more than twice a week to retain moisture. I will definitely start moisturizing more.
Thx for the tip! I've been looking for a spray on, leave in moisturizer that was chemical free and this sounds like it might fit the bill (and smell delicious) 🌸
Cantu doesn't play well with others lol. Typically it flakes when paired with other products, even in the Cantu line. The ingredients WERE trash, but I haven't looked at it lately so I don't know. But I don't do Cantu! I'm mixed 3C/4A, so I use heavy butters and creams perfectly fine. I have cracked the code for going wash to wash without remoisturizing: steaming my deep conditioner every week. My hair's super hydrated before I moisturize it, and I'm low porosity, so once it's in there, it's in there. I typically go 10-14 days between washes, and my hair's just as moisturized as it was once I've finished washing and styling. I keep it in a bonnet, silk scarf or satin-lined beanie 99% of the time because I'm disabled and rarely leave my house since the p-word hit in 2020. So I've retained about 15 inches of hair since then! And I'm about to cut it all of next month for my bday! 🤣🤣🤣 2 feet of hair is alot to deal with when you can't lift your arms over your shoulders longer than 15/20 at a time. So wash day became wash DAYS...and it's not worth it. So I'm getting a short tapered style and going to keep it for a while. I'm supposed to have a major surgery on my back again in the next 3 months, and I don't want my hair to be neglected for the entire recovery period by being in cornrows and covered up. I can still care for a short cut, and my bf can keep it cut for me, too.
I stopped using Cantu when I found out it wasn't black owned. I don't care what other people use in their hair, but I try to suppose. Mielle and Camille Rose has worked for me the most. Oh and mango butter
I have 4c / 3c hair like I have different sections in my hair with different types 😂 I've never had my hair taller than my neck length. But I did manage to get it to tailbone length by: Never stress, like I even cut contact with family members who stressed me out, I still help financially but would never allow somebody to stress me out. 2. I had a detailing brush at the shower, and I just wash, condition, oil my hair while I am at the shower, and never (never touch my hair outside the shower). 3. The third and most important step is that I always tuck in the ends of my hair( a braid and just tuck the ends in, a bun and make sure the ends are tucked in, any other type of braids I get them done while am at the shower and my ends get tucked in. I've accepted that I have different type of hair and I dont have the luxury of styling it in a different way. Once this step is done trust me you will enjoy happy hair journey.
I have normal porosity 3c/4a hair and I’ve tried lots of products since bring natural for over 10 years. Mielle leave-in and Aunt Jackie’s leave-in, and African Pride Moisture Miracle Leave-in keeps my hair moisturized and soft. I wash and condition every 3 days and wear a low bun.
This is the first of your videos I've watched and I am totally enjoying all the gems being dropped. I use the jeri curl spray 4-5 times a week and have found that heavy cream and shampoos work best on my hair. Cantu leave-in conditioner is one of the products I use. I discovered this information about my hair through trial and error and my hair is thriving.
I definitely agree with being mindful about growth rates. If you're measuring your hair 1x a month and your hair is not growing about ½ inch per month (if your goal is to grow hair), then you should probably implement retention practices in your regimen (baby & trim ends regularly, stretch your natural hair, etc.). Loc and Lco compared to simply doing a cream/leave-in and sealing with an oil seems a bit impractical. As long as your moisturizer really works for your hair, I believe it should be a 2 step process at the most.
I would love a video on hair products based on hair texture AND porosity. As a coarse high density 4c natural with average strand thickness, I used to rely on heavy products such as very thick conditioners, pomades, hair butters. Once I transitioned to products based on my hair porosity I found wash days and detangling to be a lot more manageable.
This was so informative. I need that book asap. Who knew Jerry Curl juice is still relevant?! I'm definitely using that method in the winter months. Cantu became irrelevant once the Shea Moisture brand became mainstream (at least in my area). It was cheap and not "quality" for natural hair allegedly. It was all about coconut oil and Shea butter. I still use a couple Cantu products and recommend them as well, especially for kids and teens.
I moisturize my hair twice a day with Luster Curl Moisturizer. A quarter size is good. If you use water sprited daily, your hair will smell in two days. This stuff doesn't smell. I love it.
I don't get the Cantu hate, my jar is waiting for me right now 💅🏾 I been following Dr. Aguh's moisture regimen since Aug and two days ago was the 1st wash in a *very* long time I didn't have breakage. Like nothing was on my brush nor on the floor. Thank you for this post, I'm bout to watch it again and soak it all in
I don’t wait her. But I must say in the older formulae about 6 years ago it started leavening a white shell on my hair and Dr said it wasn’t absorbing water very well. I was also losing hair from inflammatory issues and hormones…so I don’t blame it any more
I tried the Miele Curl Smoothie in the LCO format. That same evening, my hair was so dry and ashy. I replaced it with Creme of Nature Twisting Cream, and my hair retained the moisture and softness for 2 days. I used Water(L), C of N (C) and Argan Oil (O). That's my jam. I have Sister Locks, and my hair is 4C Low Porosity. I found my magic after watching this video. Shea Moisture Products dry out my hair as well. I've tried different formulations, and nothing worked. Creme of Nature is one of the OGs, I'll stick with them. Thank u both so much for putting this out for us.🙏🙏🙏
I have 4c natural hair. I used a mayo, egg, moringa powder, olive and flaxseed oil hair mask. My hair was so moisturized afterwards. Then I put aloe vera juice in a spray bottle with fenugreek seeds and oils and spray my hair down.
I had a stylist recommend spraying the S-Curl spray on my braids because she said it'll keep my hair moisturized in the protective style. That was about 7 yrs ago and has become a staple product ever since. I call it my Soul Glo Solution 😂😂 I JUST discovered Head & Shoulders Royal Oil line from watching Dr. Alexis Stephens video on curly hair & scalp conditions. That line has been a GAME CHANGER for my scalp🏆 . This is the first time I've ever woke up w/o flakes around my hair line, and I use the refresher spray on my braids becz it smells SOOO GOOD 😊. L♥️VE L♥️ VE Your Channel!!!
I got started with all this stuff in high school in the 70s watching Soul Train with the "Watu Wasuri, Use Afro Sheen, Beautiful People Use Afro Sheen" commercials . And today, I can't find Don Cornelius nowhere 'round here. Wash hair weekly for moisture, oil the scalp with stimulating oils then seal with a leave in cream, protective styles and low manipulation, and try that S- Curl y'all 2-3 x's during the week, leave that jherri curl alone ok? That wasn't cool even back then. Less is more ladies. Blessings ❤❤❤
Thank you so much for sharing. Cantu is great, I think these other companies are just really trying to make money. One of the first thing I was taught as a young girl was to take care of my hair. That became my sense of pride, until I had children lol. At one point I was going to my hairdresser twice a week😮 I guess the bottom line for me is the hair industry make much money off us black women, but the simple things still work. Great information… you are a blessing.
Tried Scurl and it’s something in it that tears my scalp up! I never knew what ingredient made my scalp itch so bad where I’d have to wash it a day after using it. As I Am so much moisture I can manage a lil better concentrated only on hair followed by an oil. I do like how the doctor understands how one can feel when we see others with thick long hair but can’t seem to achieve it ourselves. She understands that feeling as a kid or a teen, it can get you pretty down. She gets it
I'm type 3 and I love using butters on my hair. At least, the one that makes my hair look great is Maui Moisture Vanilla Bean Butter. I think it just depends how much you use, if you have fine hair you can use a butter, just use a little. I personally slather it on and my hair looks great.
@@lani8819 if I'm wearing my hair in a braid or bun I'll add a little more each day to smooth the flyaways and do that for 3, maybe 4 days then wash and redo it. If I wear my hair down I'll put it in on day 1 and then I won't reapply the next day, maybe wear it in a loose curly ponytail on the 3rd day and put a little extra in to smooth the fuzz down in the front just a little, then wash and redo. So like every 3 days I'll redo it no matter what style I wear.
I love cantu!!! I use the shampoo, conditioner, masques, leave in conditioner, curling cream, strength treatment and curl stretcher. I also use other brands but cantu is my basis for my 4c
Me personally my hair responds to a spritz that has Water, Glycerin, Leave In Conditioner and Grapeseed Oil. Also Aloe based creams like Maui Moisture works best for me.
This does not fit every one. I disagree with the notion that if your hair is thicker or denser, you should thicker oils or creams. My hair does not like feeling heavy and the Cantu products she mentioned caused my hair to thin over time. While I respect her knowledge, it is important for everyone to STUDY their own hair, diet, etc. Doctors have GENERAL knowledge but you have SPECIFIC knowledge about yourself.
This video comes at an interesting time with a lot of people pushing for the Wash-condition-style, ‘if your hair is dry, just wash it’, ‘no leave-in needed’, no raw oil or butters routine.
My hair doesn't like to be manipulated every day to the level of washing agitation. I do use a daily leave in. If im swimming i prefer my hair in twists and i Co-wash the twists
I have 4c hair and I just use grease on my hair, obviously I condition and deep condition on my wash days but then I just use grease after the wash and in between wash I just spray some water and it works great for me!
About the cantu thing. If I remember correctly, there was a time when naturals got really into using black-owned products. The thought was a sister/brother would know what to put in the product intended for black hair because they're black too. Cantu got got by a non-black company some time in the 2000's and everyone was like 'we don't fuck with them no more.' Turns out Cantu was made by not a black person to begin with. So, I think, people wanted even more to be mad about and a hate for cantu grew from there. There's a fair amount of nonblack-owned black hair products out there, but we don't talk about it like that no more out of fear our favorites could be one.
When my hair is pressed I use a serum, grease, gloss hair polisher, or butter. I don't put anything that has water in it whatsoever during the time it's straightened or it will revert back before i want it to. I wrap it every night with one or two of those items or either roll it. The info you all gave is very educational. I sure do thank the both of you.
I'm all for trial and error in finding the right products and routine to healthy hair! Just use precaution in mixing some hair products, as it may cause breakage and itchiness!
Same. Since I moved to the US the weather and water is harsh on my hair. A few years ago I started making all my hair products and i started washing my hair every 4-6 weeks and I have seen a difference.
What's more important (low porosity, kinky coily coarse, high density myself), you need to know your porosity to determine what products to use and works. In addition, oil production on the scalp (sebum) plays a part as well. The more the scalp produces, the less oil you need. You can even coat your hair shaft by pulling it down. You shouldn't have to be be moisturizing 7 times weekly, even in colder climates. At least 2-3 times weekly. I haven't had any issues when I was a loose natural. Now I'm loc'd and the same thing applies. Less is more.
I have naturally high porosity hair. I have to moisturise my hair every day and sometimes twice a day in winter. My overall skin and scalp type is dry so moisture is ny friend and not my enemy. You have to know your scalp type and your hair type.
I live in the desert where the air is arid all year. I moisturize everyday!!! Wash with shampoo and follow with deep conditioning once a week. Condition wash every other day. Moisturize daily with water and a leave in and hair grease. Can’t use many products with a high volume of glycerine as glycerine pulls moisture from the air. In desert climates, there is very little moisture in the air for the glycerine to draw from making my hair dry.
I used the OG Cantu products AGES ago....I tried some of the newer stuff once and it made my scalp burn....felt like I had relaxer-like chemical burns. Never tried it again. My mom, on the otherhand, loves Cantu.
Also never mentions porosity which definitely matters… 4AB hair that’s low porosity does not like heavy creams or too many layers of product bc the cuticle doesn’t let them in…
Hi, about Glycerin....remember, it will also pull moister out of your air and give it to the atmosphere in certain climates. I found that out the hard way, be careful 😮.
My hair is naturally soft and like cotton. My 4b/4c coils defines easily and stays moisturized. With cantu my hair feels so hard and like hay. It breaks off (on its own) the very next day. That's what I have against it
It's been revealed that all hair grows out of the scalp from different sized circles. The hair typing system is inaccurate. Ref: Pamela Ferrell interview on curly hair crisis channel. Since Africa and Eurasia are continents not countries and made up of different ethnicities and nationalities, each individual person can have different textures of hair on their head and each person must take into account their own individual hair needs no matter what part of the world they reside.
I just took down boho faux locs that were crocheted in using the cornrow latchhook method... smh. I thought I was protecting something. I had enough shed hair to cover a 6 month old baby's head in a pile on my face bowl. Girrrrl... girl. I cleansed and used a heated round brush to blow out my tress. I still had a full head of hair, but you would have thought I would be patchy patchy. Tonight I trimmed lightly and did a comb through section by section with a spray shampoo made for braids & naturals. My dense, curly fro is poppin, but I think I may butter my hair in the morning for a more deep conditioning. I'm back to blending my own hair butters.
This video was soo informative, thank you for sharing! 10 Stars 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩 for you! In re Cantu or "cant-do!" ,FOR ME: I used the leave in on my 4c high density coarse hair, it goes in great, but within a few hours, no lie, hair became crunchy🙄 and the next day would give me terrible itching and even flakes (don't normally have dandruff)...dislike it greatly!
yes same here! Ive used several of their products on my 4/a/b hair and my sons 3a hair. theyre ok for him but I also can use just water and vaseline on him and hes fine lmao. but I have to still use alot of product and even some of their own prodcuts dont work together i.e. detangler and curl creme. turns white smh
I agree that we need to moisturize the hair more, but I think we should also be careful of the products we use. I have found that there are a number of hair care products that have parabens (preservatives) and DMDM hydantoin (produces formaldehyde) in them. The chemical over load is worse than the dry hair. It is very difficult to find products that do a good job that are free of chemicals.
I understand your caution because brands tend to confuse the heck out of people with these product and ingredient claims. So "free of chemicals" is not a thing as everything including the air we breathe and the water we drink is made up of chemicals. There's also a lot of misinformation around things like parabens ---the original study that said they were "bad" has not been proven, but unfortunately consumers caught onto the incorrect information first and because brands want to continue selling products, even ones who know better sell "paraben-free" products. Unfortunately though, some of the alternatives used to preserve products have caused more issues for people in terms of allergic reactions: www.washingtonpost.com/wellness/2022/02/15/paraben-free-unsafe-clean-beauty/ I would say it's probably actually not that hard to find products---it's much harder to correct the misinformation.
@@styleandbeautydoctor My problem is most personal care brands replaced parabens with a known, bio-accumalative irritant for people with allergies and sensitive skin: phenoxyethanol, in their preservative system. Which is worse when they combine it with fragrance or essential oils. Even if brands for sensitive skin like Cetaphil kept the parabens, can't use some of the products because they contain known allergens like almond oil. For anyone with sensitivities and allergies, it's just harder to find products.
Hi, love the videos, so informative. Can Dr. Aguh put the age long debate to rest? Is hair grease bad for the hair? Does it wash out? How can we properly use it in our regimen? Thanks!
Cantu has always done my hair dirty in terms of porosity. It dries and flakes up on my hair before my hair can even absorb it, and I have to wash it out.
I have high porosity, high density, very dry, ultra-fine 4c strands. Cantu has never done me dirty. Now if you have the opposite of my hair profile, yeah it most likely won't work. I have a white friend with a mixed race daughter and she said her daughter's hair doesn't like Cantu.
We tried so many different products but shea moisture is the one that sticks for us. The Cantù gives us rash because of the fragrances, the shea moisture doesn’t give us rash.
I LOVED a natural rosewater/glycerin/vitamin E spray when i was locked! Look jnto videos of Yannie the locologist. You don’t want to apply all these product in locs. It can cause buildup!❤️
That Head n shoulders Royal oils is really good for dry hair (for us I mean). It’s GOOD! Also I found that Proclaim Shea butter castor oil (I believe it has Shea but it’s definitely by Proclaim) is the only castor oil I can use that doesn’t itch my scalp. I put it in after washing & conditioning, massaging it in the scalp then adding some to damp hair= no itching SOFT hair for dayys
I used leave in cantu on my 4c hair and it felt so soft and amazing. When it finished and I bought it again, my hair refused it. Now no cantu products work on my hair and I do hear of people that have 4c hair complain about cantu.
This has been extremely enlightening to me.... I can benefit from this new knowledge and I thank you both for your expertise.. it is obvious that Dr.A loves what she does and I really appreciate her. Thank you very much for sharing this!
Brilliant 👌🏾 Re: Cantu “Cantu is owned by PDC Brands, and in February 2020, the company made Alex Tosolini, a white man, the CEO. Before Tosolini, James Stammer, who is also a white man, was CEO.” Apparently was a big deal. But cleansing your body with a bar of Dove is not. 😂
I recently switched from butters only after running out of my favorite Camille Rose twisting creme and not be able to find it on the shelves at my local Walmart for a while to Camille Rose mousse with honey. I have never been a mousse girl. But my twist out come out so fluffy and full without the friss. I am changed woman. My hair type is for the most part of my head a 3C
Like what you said bout watching those "long flowing hair" videos...I watch for content creators that have hair like mine & look like me. Those others R fun but...
I never got on with gel. Lol! Not even for my summer wash n go's. I rarely do braids outs and twist outs. I have high porosity ultra-fine 4c strands and Cantu still works for me. I can apply the cream daily as a US 25 cent coin /UK 50 pence coin size. For more moisture, I use the As I Am Castor oil water. Unless you have butt crack length hair, you do not need handfuls of any heavy cream product. The more watery the product, the more of it you can use. The heavier the product, the more carful you havebto be using it.
Yeah I have 3c-3b hair. Definitely fucked up in my earlier years by overly using product and just letting water run through it. I also live in Nevada a fairly dry area so I have to moisturize a little more. But yeah, I'll put in a leave in a and just wait 3-4 days to put more in after just washing with water for several days
Cantu is really good. Most people just run by hear-say from someone who may have miss used the Cantu or probably did not give it enough time to do what it's got to do for their hair...
This video came in handy just in time. my hair gets extra dry in the cold 🙄 she gave a list of oils I didn’t see almond oil I wonder if she recommends it ?! That’s the one I use and it smells amazing ❤️
Cantu is drying as heck, they been canceled in my book. I'm head over heals in love with every and all Shea moisture products. They have saved my hairs life!
Sadly none of the girls on the just for me perm or any perm box had an actual perm it was a simple blow out or hot comb.. thwy all admitted it so we used it for nothing

Thank you.
Seasons and environments make a difference. Winter makes skin dry and does same to my hair.
You have the same linke for Dr. Aguh's website and IG.
I’ll see if we can do a follow-up!
Yes agreed! When using Blue Magic on my scalp, my hair is still soft when I take my braids out. When I used oil only, my hair would be so dry.
Omg!! I’ve been avoiding using grease and my scalp has been scabbing and inflamed so badly I’ve been considering seeing dermatologist about it.
When I was younger my hair was down my back and what was I using?? BLUE MAGIC AND ROYAL CROWN!! It wasn’t until I stepped away from those products trying to be like the UA-cam gurus that my hair stopped growing and my scalp started suffering because they said grease was “bad”
I’m so glad you confirmed this for me! Thank so much for sharing! ❤
Old school methods WORK. I would wash my hair and put castor oil only and my hair was BEAUTIFUL. Then I started listening to "youtube experts " and my hair is not satisfactory.
THIS!! yes mam..i use old school Blue magic mixed with sulfer 8..NOTHING else works..i had to spend 1000 plus on new age products to find out the old stuff works for me
Aye! This is what I use!!!!
Are you relaxed ?
@@VANITYISFARE I was most of my life but haven't been in over a year. I just can't leave my hair naturally curly because it's just hard to keep up with so I prefer it to be straight with a blow dryer or occasionally straightened
@@AlwaysLM2011 if you dont have a relaxer youre natural . Blowdrying it doesnt make you not natural
@@VANITYISFARE I'm not stupid lol. I am well aware dear. I mean going natural by having it naturally curly. I prefer straight natural....get it now 😅
The reason why I personally don't like Cantu products is because they don't work well with other products... after a whole day of washing, deep conditioning, and detangling, you don't want to have a bunch of white flakes on your hair. Your shirt will look like christmas on July 😆
🤣🤣🤣 omg lol
Cantu has this synthetic smell that my olfactory hates!
*Caveat* I'm highly sensitive to smells, especially very sweet ones (induce a headache or make me nauseous), musky/woody (gives me a stuffy throat), and sharp/cold smells (induce stuffy/runny nose for me)
The flakes kill me and my hair always feel lacklustre after using the products. They changed the ingredients
@@uberhaute_naturalz84 I hear you on that!!! 😭
That’s how I feel about mielle
You can use things like aloe Vera juice , glycerin and fenugreek . These things will help lock in moisture for a longer period of time.
On average I moisturize my hair every two -three days.
4a- 4b
I just accept my genetics and hair growth speed. Most grow a full inch in 2 months. It takes me 4 months to get a full inch. No I'm gonna oil my scalp or take vitamins, as long as it still grows, I'm good ❤️🤗
I grow 2 inches a month when I eat healthy and drink enough water it's 3 inches a month.
@@shanequaaustin8908 ok what was your point of telling her that to make you feel better ??? Byyyyeeee
That S-Curl comment/suggestion is the TRUTH! My mother has used that in her "homemade Granny Grease" for years!!!!
What grease do your granny use
I think because curly hair is very curly and shrinks up a lot it appears to grow slower. When curly hair is stretched out it can be longer than many straight hair people.
This is so true. I've been growing out the dyed ends of my hair, I cut it every 3-6 months. When I stretch it I'm always surprised that it's past my shoulders far.
Right?! I see too much proof that our hair don’t grow slower.

Wow this is a fantastic comment. I agree!
BOY,. U. SAID. IT. ALL. !!!! AND,. SAID. IT. ALL. SO. WELL. !!!! 🌿🥰🌿🎯🌿🥰🌿😘🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿

That’s not normal no matter what anyone says the natural hair tax is very real and until we start to figure the system out it will be like this for a long time
Great tips. UA-cam has gotten my 4c hair past my shoulders. I’m grateful for the free knowledge 💓
Love this video. My hair gets dry very often. I never thought to moisturize more than twice a week to retain moisture. I will definitely start moisturizing more.
I love using rose water as a moisturizer… it’s AMAZING and leaves your hair very soft
yes and with braids, my hair just grows.
Thx for the tip! I've been looking for a spray on, leave in moisturizer that was chemical free and this sounds like it might fit the bill (and smell delicious) 🌸

Which brand do you use?
Thank you so much for reminding me about steam!!❤
I do aloe vera juice and Shea butter to moisturize/seal my hair. Simple and easy.
Hey how do you mix it?
@@flasunshyne nope. Spritz my hair with the juice then apply Shea butter
I stopped using Cantu when I found out it wasn't black owned. I don't care what other people use in their hair, but I try to suppose. Mielle and Camille Rose has worked for me the most. Oh and mango butter
I just started using Mielle. The green one. So far it has moisturized my 4c hair
I have 4c / 3c hair like I have different sections in my hair with different types 😂
I've never had my hair taller than my neck length. But I did manage to get it to tailbone length by:
Never stress, like I even cut contact with family members who stressed me out, I still help financially but would never allow somebody to stress me out.
YES TO CURL ACTIVATORS/ JERRY CURL JUICE!!
Your hair looks so healthy Danielle
thank you so much!
4zz here. Moisturize and seal daily. And I'm still old school enough to use Pink Lotion and Cantu.
Lmao @ 4zz....I thought I was the only 1 that called my hair 4z! 🤣 😂
I love it.
I don't get the Cantu hate, my jar is waiting for me right now 💅🏾
I been following Dr.
I was also losing hair from inflammatory issues and hormones…so I don’t blame it any more
My fine low density kinks are also finer due to hormonal treatment. Minoxidil helps the thinning and the moisture method got my shedding controlled

I am so glad I ran across this video. My hair and my 2 little girls hair have been so very dry this season. Thank you for the info 😊
How do you use it? Daily or weekly?
@@lani8819 if I'm wearing my hair in a braid or bun I'll add a little more each day to smooth the flyaways and do that for 3, maybe 4 days then wash and redo it. If I wear my hair down I'll put it in on day 1 and then I won't reapply the next day, maybe wear it in a loose curly ponytail on the 3rd day and put a little extra in to smooth the fuzz down in the front just a little, then wash and redo. So like every 3 days I'll redo it no matter what style I wear.
@@TheTjoy910 Thank you so much. I want to start regularly incorporating butters again into my routine, so that was very helpful. Thanks again.
@@lani8819 youre welcome!
My aunts have always told me that I had to put grease in my 4c hair everyday.
Yup S-curl is a great leave in conditioner for type 4 hair
omg best video I have ever seen on curly hair care, thank you
I love cantu!!! I use the shampoo, conditioner, masques, leave in conditioner, curling cream, strength treatment and curl stretcher. I also use other brands but cantu is my basis for my 4c
I really enjoyed this video. I don't struggle with dryness, but now I understand why the LOC method is okay.
Almost 20 years natural and also in MD
We didn't have the information back then that we do now as far as how to take care of our hair!
I use alot of Carol's daughter products. I love their hair masks.
Olaplex isn’t a protein treatment but a bond builder. It can (& maybe should) be used way more often than a true protein (APHOGEE).
Wow, you really are the GOAT for this video! Straight facts. Very humbling as a fine haired 3c woman but much appreciated 😂
The hostess. 🤦🏾♀️Bring your natural personality with the natural hair care program. I'm sure you're naturally phenomenal...do that.✊🏾💯👏🏽🌟
What's more important (low porosity, kinky coily coarse, high density myself), you need to know your porosity to determine what products to use and works.
Omg that’s a trip I’ve always used water/ my conditioner w water& then my oil!❤
I seal it. I think 3 times is enough if you stretch your hair and protect it at night.
Thank you so much for this video. It came in right on time because I just cut off my hair and I’m learning how to manage it all over again.
I would like to buy the 90 days to curl book
Oh yes! That Jheri curl juice has been my holy grail!
Also never mentions porosity which definitely matters… 4AB hair that’s low porosity does not like heavy creams or too many layers of product bc the cuticle doesn’t let them in…
Love the info shared in this video. Wish there were a suggestion or two for those of us who have chemically treated (i.e. relaxed) hair.
Great video! I really appreciate the logical and medical approach that the doctor brings.
Thank you!!
Appreciate this video (off to find something for my 4C hair).
Love this informative content!
Hi, about Glycerin....remember, it will also pull moister out of your air and give it to the atmosphere in certain climates. I found that out the hard way, be careful 😮.
Loved this presintation, 👑Beauty Dr breaking it down, & 👑Dr Crystal giving us that science!🎉 The "Medulla" part at @20mins was🔥📝
You are ABSOLUTELY adorable! Love your presentation style! 😄
Thanks so much! 😊
My hair is naturally soft and like cotton. My 4b/4c coils defines easily and stays moisturized. With cantu my hair feels so hard and like hay. It breaks off (on its own) the very next day. That's what I have against it
I don't think cantu is for low porosity and coarse strands. I have high porosity ultra-fine 4c strands and cantu never did me wrong.
Cantù drys out my hair. It’s a NO-GO for me. 14:31
Cantu is a no 4 me ,gel moisturizer works better than cream
S Curl activator is EVERYTHING!!! 🔥🔥🔥
Lusters curl moisturizer is my staple. There is no better moisturizer. I use it daily. By the third day, my hair is super moisturized
It's been revealed that all hair grows out of the scalp from different sized circles. The hair typing system is inaccurate.

This was 🔥. I needed this info and this encouragement.
@@TheodoreBakes smh...yeah, like I said, "cant-do" 🤣

Unfortunately though, some of the alternatives used to preserve products have caused more issues for people in terms of allergic reactions: www.washingtonpost.com/wellness/2022/02/15/paraben-free-unsafe-clean-beauty/
I would say it's probably actually not that hard to find products---it's much harder to correct the misinformation.
I’m locked now, but still struggle with dryness. Thanks for sharing this video. I thought the struggle was over after locking up…completely wrong😢
Drink more water and rinse with water daily
@@luciaescobarz omg yes ....I'm not even loc'd but I've been following Yannie for years. She has such a Great simple approach to locs
Drink lots of water
great video! i'm 31 and learned so much in this video vs my entire 20s of trying(albeit ha;f heartedly to fix my dry frizzy hair)
Awwww I’m on the thumbnail 🥰🫶🏽 great video queen!!
oh wow! you are a stock photo queeeeen! there were so many dope pics of you in canva to choose from. thanks, boo 😘😘😘
So to avoid weighing your hair down you will have to wash your hair condition and re-set/style
Brilliant 👌🏾
Re: Cantu
“Cantu is owned by PDC Brands, and in February 2020, the company made Alex Tosolini, a white man, the CEO.
Cantu doesn't mix well with Eco styler gel, which most of us use.
I thought a leave-in conditioner was to smooth the outer layer and a moisturizer was to penetrate the strands to put moisture in the strands.
Water moisturizes, oil seals. Oil AFTER water based products only.
Maybe she didn't recommend it because it's an allergen. Dermatologists often treat patient's allergy symptoms.
So Agree with you @ 4:46.
Great Video. 🤍
