Boss Katana - Using a Looper Pedal

- The Boss Katana is a great amplifier to use a Looper pedal with as it has so many great-sounding effects built right in. In this video, I show you the way to connect a looper pedal to the Boss Katana and how to use the internal effects to record into the Looper. The Studio Rats are core band members Paul Drew on guitar/production/mixing, drummer James Ivey and Dan Hawkins on bass. They collaborate with singers and musicians to produce radio-ready songs.

This is the main reason I chose a Katana 100 over the 50, even though I don't plan to leave my room :-)
Same, bed guitarist here. Sold my 50mkii and purchased the katana head mkii mainly for the effects loop for my looper. It’s 30w only but I don’t gig and like to use headphones so it works well. Half the size too so saves me a lot of space
@Jefferson Zyaire don’t listen to this scammer. Look up the instaportal scam on google. It automatically charges you a monthly fee and and doesn’t offer you anyway to stop the payments.
Hey, great job! My wife bought me Katana 50 as a birthday gift. Now, I understand that Katana 100 has more usable footswitch and Send Return options. Anyway, thanks my wife :)
Same reason I chose the katana 100mkII. So much this amp is capable of.
Great video, very helpful!
I discovered too late the issue with the 50 :-(
There is a way through this, check out a video by Brian Kelly.
Such beautiful melody you played at the beginning of the video
Great demo Paul...... thank you
Very nice. Just got my Katana 100 MK II and looper.
I have a boss rc1 and it's been going strong about ten years now I think.
Really great explanation and demo of this technique! Thanks very much!
Cheers Douglas.
Great again. This one I'm going to need to playback slower to get the details. Wonderful teaching....didn't know I could do that with my Katana. Cheers!
Glad it was helpful!
Just what I was looking for! Great video as always, Cheers
Love your channel! So practical and educational.
This is an excellent tutorial for us newbies ... thanks man
Glad it was helpful!
Wow. Great chanel, great content, great musician!
Cheers orzelg.
thanks! this was extremely useful :D
Sounds great, has that Alan Parson's vibe.
Cheers Christopher.
Beautifully played, as always
Thanks Freezaxp.
For anyone wanting to upgrade from the 50 to 100 or willing to spend money for looper use there’s another option: buy a second Katana 50: The 2 main reason are that you can achieve looping through and you can run an true stereo rig
Ive been thinking about trading my katana 50 for a 100 but this sounds interesting, can you explain how the setup with looper and effects pedals would work?
So the send/return settings in Tone Studio don't do anything with a Katana 50 right? I have been scratching my head wondering what it's for. Kinda wish I went with the 100, but I'm low on real estate space currently.
at the beginning of the intro I couldn't avoid thinking on Eye in the Sky by Alan Parsons
Hi there, thanks for your video! Just a quick question, how are you recording the guitar onto your computer? silly question probably but i'm just getting started :) liked and subscribed! Cheers
you plug the Katana into a PC/Mac with a USB-B cable I think... believe it's a printer style cable but I could be wrong. I believe the Katana might come with free software but you could always use GarageBand or Reaper for free
Hi, thanks for your great contributions on UA-cam! A question: when I change an affect on the GA-FC the Post Rev of the 'Send/Return change to Post Amp in the Boss Tone Studio. And not all effects can be played. Can you advice me?
hey Paul , did you notice that when you use series and don't use the effects loop ( eg just unplug the pedal) the amp is not "working", that channel won't produce any sound. Another thing that was somewhat confusing is that the parallel changes the sound quite a bit. Cheers
Hi Paul, I'm trying to use a looper pedal (BOSS RC5) with two Katana in a stereo expand configuration. With Looper connected post reverb I get only mono sound from both speacker. Is there any way to get stereo sound? Thank you.
If you have a loop pedal which also does some drums, or even drums and bass (like DigiTech Trio+), then you'll really want to set position to "POST REV". Otherwise your drums will get delay and reverb as well which is undesirable.
Even without drums produced by a looper pedal, I can't imagine a use for "POST AMP", you'd want to imprint all sounds into your loop. You also wouldn't want any knobs on your amp to effect your loop (other than volume).
this is what happens to me even if I set post rev, my recorded loop tone keep changing when I want to switch to another channel, what do I do wrong ? would you know ?
Holy smokes ! I’m glad I’m not the only with issues with this. I notice the tone is slightly different as soon as you change the send return to post reverb. Do you?
Quick question... Have you got any tips on how to get a good bass guitar simulation from the octave or pitch shifter effects? I haven't had much luck so far, probably missing something obvious but can't seem to get anything useable. Love the tips and tricks for the Katana, keep the good stuff coming!
Dry or direct signal very low or non existent, 1octave down from standard tuning and experiment with effect level
That socked foot was a nice surprise effect too. Didn't expect that 😃
Glad I can feed your fetish.
@@TheStudioRats haha good one
Do you have to use the tone studio?
If i have physical chorus reverb etc pedals do i plug the looper into the effects return then into the chorus pedal then into effects send?
So if I set the send and receive position to 'post rev' and unplug my laptop does the amp save that by default? And that's all I need to do to make the looper not change the settings on all the saved loops (only the one currently being played?)
Soooo.....since the input on the top of the amp was empty when you switched the looper over to it then where is it I plug in the guitar??? 3rd video I watched that skipped that part. The looper with GAFC is proving troublesome at this point.
I'm thinking of getting the boss rc10 r with the drum rhythms. Of course I don't want the drums to be affected by the fx, so by using post reverb on the katana I assume this avoids this?
If i have a mic directly connected to my looper , is there a way to apply the effects to the mic through the send/return function? I'll definitely buy you a coffee if you know how to do that!
I notice when I change the send return to post reverb/series ,all my guitar tones are affected and don’t sound as good.
Thank you for a fantastic video and great guitar playing! Quick question: I want to use a Katana Artist Series to perform solo looper gigs. Can I use this amp with a looper and a footswitch to switch channels without the tone studio? In other words, I might have a rhythm preset on slot #1. I record my loop to that using the FX channel. Then, I switch to a lead preset on slot #2 to solo over the top of the rhythm loop with the new tone without affecting the rhythm tone. (Just like you did in the video, but using presets, not Tone Central.) I want to keep the setup super simple without bringing an iPad, iPhone, or laptop to run the tone studio.
Hey did you ever find a solution to your question? I’m looking to do the exact same thing lol would love some help if you can provide some tips
What I u have a boss katana mk2 50w and no effects loop can u buy a effect loop pedal is there such a thing would it work?
You cant do this with the 50 watt ?
Hello mate can I send you a pic of my rig ? I can’t get the fx loop to work maybe u could help me ?
paul just picked up a boss rc 202 and cant get the effects to work from amp tp looper .anyone help?
What does parallel looping do?
Question: The Katana 50 MkII doesn't have in-out looper ports on back. If I had a multieffects processor pedal with a 3.5 mm headphone out, could one record looper through the pedal and then unplug guitar from pedal and plug guitar into Katana.....and then use the headphone out on the pedal into the Aux input on the Katana?
Wouldn't that all you to have the "loop" bypass all the Katana effects/mod/reverb/etc but still allow you to use all the fx/mods/reverb/etc of the Katana for the guitar solo parts over the looper?
Its a cool idea although a headphone out is powered so i suspect you will end up driving the looper too hard and get distortion. Unfortunately your best option is to sell the 50 and buy a 100
@@TheStudioRats Well thanks for the info. But I just bought the 50 a week ago and the 100 is a bit more than I wanted to spend plus I live in a small apartment type place and don't want to blow out my neighbors...LOL.
I guess I could just plug a multieffects pedal into the "power amp" input jack in the back of the Katana and just use the pedal for all the effects over the loop. This would basically mean the Katana is used only as a speaker system. But, since it is just for some noodling and solo practice it would work.
Alternatively, I can just run some backing tracks I purchase or play backing tracts from youtube on my phone through the aux input of the Katana and solo along.
Anyway, I am really enjoying all the Katana videos. Great work! Very helpful!
I know you usually do videos on boss products, but would this work for a champion 100?
Hey Enrique. Yes as long as it has an effects loop. But you can always go in the front.
are you answering questions?
If it’s not a question that should be asked to boss tech support, yes I am
Ive had my Mk2 head for a couple of weeks now. I was a little underwhelmed at first...
This should be in bold letters in the manual.
You really need to use it at least in the 50w, if not the the 100w mode setting and to really get the ‘tube logic’ (flux capacitor) to do its thing and get tube like warmth.
Waaaay over my head. Old fart just can't seem to understand this new stuff. But I'm still trying to get it. In the comments one said That's why they bought the 100 over the 50. "?" Now I don't understand
Hi Mike. The 50watt version doesn’t have an effects loop, the 100 watt version does. We are doing a live Q and A tomorrow at 8pm BST. If you have any questions about the Katana or other music/ guitar questions I’d be very happy to answer them.
Really it's more or less like the analog pedals you always used, only you have the controls in an app instead the on the floor.
valebliz , hard for an old man. A computer was hard enough.
