Are the Night Troopers Really an Undead Army?

  • Grand Admiral Thrawn is in control of an interesting group of stormtroopers referred to as Night Troopers. What's their deal? Many fans think they could be dead soldiers reanimated through Nightsister magick. Is that actually possible? Here are my thoughts!

    Personally, I think it would be interesting if they were just warded by Nightsister magic. Maybe force resistant or simply more resilient.

      I like the idea of resilience. Perhaps the red bands are imbued with that ability, but the armor still gets damaged and they repair it with kintsugi.

      @ICU1337 Thrawn was defeated by a Jedi, a Jedi who is still on the planet. Imagine trying to force push or mind trick a trooper, and it just doesn't work - or at least isn't as effective.
      Plus, it would call back to the ysalamir Thrawn used in Legends without completely cutting them off from the force.

      Before people started talking about the stormtroopers being undead, I simply thought Thrawn might have started conscripting natives, and their culture had influenced the veteran troopers. I hope that's the case, but I suspect the undead will figure into Thrawn's and the Great Mothers' plans at some point.

    • @imperialistopinions2276
      @imperialistopinions2276 10 місяців тому +33

      I think Thrawn's troopers act perfectly reasonable given their circumstances. They were basically shipwrecked in a different galaxy, taken from their families, friends, and all they had ever known. Thrawn led these people for nine years, ensuring their survival even while they lost comrades to whatever strange people and creatures they may have encountered over all these years. I'd be more surprised if they weren't battle hardened Thrawn fanatics - he's their savior and leading them back home. So I honestly hope Filoni isn't just giving Thrawn a whole zombie army, not just because it doesn't suit him, but because it takes away the very human element of the entire situation those Imperial have gone through.

    My worry here is that it doesn't really feel like something Thrawn would do. He's always been more of a military kinda villain, and a bit less magic/mystical focused to me personally.
    On the other hand though, if he was defeated 10 years ago by someone using the force, so maybe in those years he's used the time to become knowledgeable in the paranormal and supernatural

      The Chimera is a wreck, no one in the Imperial Remnant respects or wants to follow him yet, there are probably no volunteers to be found to man the ship, and Thrawn needs all the help he can get.
      Is a desperate Thrawn turning to force zombies really that out there?

    • @christianyaerger1751
      @christianyaerger1751 10 місяців тому +11

      Imagine if, over the course of his exile, Thrawn's forces were depleted to almost the last man (the Purrgil weren't gentle on the Star Destroyer, and it's evident Thrawn's been fighting somebody out there). If the Great Mothers offered a way to replenish his forces, AND he got the chance to study a new power up close and personal, I think he might have taken that deal. It's practical -- and educational!

    • @imperialistopinions2276
      @imperialistopinions2276 10 місяців тому +7

      I hope it's not true for basically the same reason. The thing is, if Thrawn's troops are undead revived by the Nightsisters, then the Nightsisters basically hold all the power in spite of them acting all subservient in episode 6. They can withdraw their magick and Thrawn's forces immediately return to being dead. Being absolutely reliant on the Force, especially wielded by outsiders, is not something Thrawn would ever allow - though I agree that working with the Nightsisters and trying to understand the Force abilities that defeated him makes sense if their goals align to some extent. He should have contingencies againt them in mind though.

      He’s worked with a deranged fallen Jedi and had a lizard that somehow makes the force null in legends. Wouldn’t put something like night sister magic past him. Especially when he’s desperate to get out of that region.

    One of Thrawn's key character traits is that he respects and values his subordinates, inspiring genuine loyalty and excellence from them in return. If the personnel aboard the Chimaera are undead, it negates one of the most important qualities that makes Thrawn a uniquely dangerous and threatening Imperial commander. That, coupled with the likelihood that we won't get a coherent enough space battle to display any of his naval genius (fingers crossed we do, but that snubfighter battle we got earlier was pretty sloppy), threatens to let the series fail to present Thrawn as anything other than a generic Imperial using the power of the dark side to get their edge, squandering his character entirely. Might as well just keep using Gideon in that case, or Hux, or any of the others.

    So far the series has been great, and I'm sure whatever Filoni decides to do with it will work well, but I really hope they aren't zombies. That just seems really dumb to me.

    I bet strength and resilience. The red chords might be tailsmen to make them stronger, but not undead. I think the gold might be material they had during their exile, and maybe Enoch started it with his mask. Enoch thinks of the Roman Empire every day

    I'd prefer them to be alive and just battle hardened and loyal to thrawn. Then maybe whatever they ate taking from the catacombs is the army that will be raised from the dead. Feel like it's not as inteesting to hear thrawn just let all his men die.

    I don't see how they could be anything else _BUT_ the undead. There's simply far too much evidence and too many plot hints that they are. And I love the fact that they are expanding live-action Star Wars with all this dark magic weirdness, subtle changes to the idea of the Force, who can be a Jedi, etc. If this franchise is gonna keep going, they can't keep doing the same things over and over.

    I generally think that some of the troopers are undead and some are alive. Like many people said, Thrawn said that the army is dwindling. Which is fairly reasonable since hiring new ones is impossible because the imperial is basically in a state of falling apart. Since Thrawn was defeated only because Ezra decided to use mystical magic stuff. It's safe to say that he learned from his mistakes and used new strategies involving magic and witchcraft from the sisters by reviving his dead soldiers to continue serving the empire.

    • @leonmat26
      @leonmat26 10 місяців тому +2

      Unless, of course, they picked up the armor of dead soldiers. But given that all stormtroopers have their own to begin with, it makes no sense for them to replace their unbroken one with a broken one. This would be more likely if the stormtroopers are natives to the planet or guerrilla forces lacking armor and stealing what they can.

    There's something definitely weird about the 'Night Troopers'. Why have we seen no officers aboard the Chimera? Apart from Enoch, where is the rest of Thrawn's chain of command? I'm thinking that Thrawn and the Great Mothers have entered into some sort of diabolical deal that has resulted in all of the humans aboard the Chimera being turned into zombies. I hope I'm wrong...

    I'm good with the zombie speculation, but the questions it raises are particularly interesting. If they're all zombies, what happened to them? How did their numbers dwindle? Why does Ezra look just fine moving around with his ninja turtle community but Thrawn and his platoon of dead bodies seem so broken and lost - and eager to get the hell off that planet?

    I don't want them to be zombies, It will lessen the impact of the scene of them chanting Thrawn's name. It would be much more cooler for Thrawn to have earned their fanaticism instead of it being "programmed" in them during reanimation. Isolation for a decade can do that for a group of people.
