- Jo Angouri and Shawnea Ting (University of Warwick): But is he unconscious?’ Risk negotiation in critical care dispatch
Accurate Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) is crucial for timely and equitable critical care intervention, yet dispatch is often characterised as the weakest link in the response chain. Despite its significance, the decision-making pathway of stakeholders in this process remain under-researched. Our study examines risk negotiation among operational and clinical teams through the lens of textual trajectories. Using the Interactional Sociolinguistic (IS) model P.A.T.H.S. standing for Participants, Artefacts, Transition Stages, Historicity, Setting, (Angouri, et al, 2024), we explore how texts are produced and co-produced within EMD. Findings reveal a complex ecosystem with risk points that influence decision-making. This interdisciplinary work highlights the value of P.A.T.H.S. in advancing EMD research, training, and policy.
