Rainy River spring walleye fishing (SHALLOW water beatdown!)

- Well, THAT was a fun way to kick off the 2021 open-water season! We zipped up to the Rainy River yesterday (3/18/21) for a quick half-day of fishing and it was well worth the 8 hours spent behind the windshield 🤣. The Birchdale access was just opened-up by the county the day before, so we dropped EVERYTHING knowing "big boats" could now launch.
Water clarity was around 2+ feet and the current was as sloooow as I had ever seen it. Lot of folks were catching fish on jigs in the 9-12' range along the main river channel and sand dunes...but we opted for the skinny-water bite. Found 'em in 4-7' on top of a gravely flat loaded with all sorts of snags: boulders, tree stumps, branches, you name it!
No idea why, but I honestly can't recall EVER seeing anyone throw hardbaits on the Rainy?! 🤷♂️ A technique that dominates early-spring on most-all other river systems where there's a spring spawning run and the walleye-fishing season is still open. And the new-ish Rapala Rap-V Blade was the real deal in that cold water + slower current.

Rainy River Walters from the shoreline is hits the spot for sure!! And correct me if I’m wrong but that looks like it’s in front of the historical centre?
Oh, and I read your description and kinda laughed to myself, thinking about this time I first started fishing near the rapids, and I was with my cousin and his dad on a boat. They were using minnows and my cousin was tryna be a know it all, telling me my hard baits wouldn’t work.. long story short, I out-fished both of them😅 don’t sleep on the hard baits!

It was made by Simms but unfortunately they don’t make it anymore. I lost my original one during a bad storm on Rainy Lake and couldn’t turnt be boat around to get it. Ended up finding a replacement on eBay or something right after they were discontinued. Now if I ever lose this one I’m diving in for it!

You're not supposed to use crankbaits with braid ? OMG!!
....and fleet farm just sold out of those baits..
