Hi again Gareth, here in China one of my neighbours was sending her son off to school each day with a very expensive Australian steak pie bought from a high-end supermarket in the city. I decided to try one, the Pukka reminds me of it very much. Took it home, heated it up, cut into it to find the majority of the filling was fresh air along with just 24g of meat! As I have my own micro-bakery I set to and produced pies guaranteed to contain at least 100g of the finest beef. I can sell these all day at less than half the cost of the Australian pie and with an excellent profit margin. Just goes to show what these large food conglomerates take or try to take from our pockets….

Incidentally, MSG occurs naturally in lotsa foods including tomatoes and mushrooms so you’re eating it without realising it! It’s had such a bad press over the years but in moderation, won’t hurt you at all….

There was a scandalous news report in the 1970s in America slamming and damn in MSG. It was completely made up and exaggerated in the media, as a result 99.9% of Americans, 40 years later, think MSG will kill you faster than cyanide!! They're a strange bunch!

Great video, mate. I am a new subscriber and I am loving your channel. For anybody who worries about MSG, MSG is actually safer than salt and reduces your sodium consumption vs salt. Both are flavour enhancers, but salt contains 3 times more sodium than MSG. I always have MSG in my kitchen. Thanks for your content, mate. I have been binge watching it today.

Controversial, but I like my pies with a tin of soup poured over. For example for a minced beef and onion I'd have heinz oxtail. Meat and potato I like pea and ham or baxters cock-a-leekie. It's a common thing in Preston (home of the butter pie btw) but my partner from Manchester thinks its minging. I think it's just free a gravy (or liquor if your a cockney) Some of my friends like a tin of heinz tomato with a cheese and onion but that's not a combo I like. What's your view on the matter?

I've never had a Hollands pie, though the all-shortcrust pastry is very appealing to me.
As for Pukka, I've always found them to have a rather large air-cavity inside which, considering their height, always makes me feel a little bit cheated - Growing up on the East London/Essex border I seldom encountered them as a youngster. Our local Chippies seemed to favour Peter's Pies (originally a Welsh company I seem to recall), which I always thought fine, especially the Chicken & Mushroom.
As for the Morrison's pie, these are generally alright - Whenever I visit my young nephew (a Student) he invariably (and proudly) produces these for dinner, with crinkle-cut chips and baked beans, alongside a bottle of Chop Sauce (my own particular favourite). And I am very proud of him for it too! :)

    Some clarifications:
MSG is not harmful for the majority of people even at large quantities because glutamate is an amino acid found in many foods like tomatoes, meats and cheeses which makes it taste savoury. That’s why MSG is used as a flavour enhancer - because it contains glutamate.
As for palm oil, it’s not harmful by itself but palm oil plantations need lots of land which means a lot of deforestation since palm oil is used in essentially everything.
I’ve simplified quite a bit but hope it helps. Cheers

The Pukka pies provide half time sustenance at my local football ground. We’ve piled on the timber ! But they are delicious. Important to make sure the base has been properly cooked.

Gareth, I recently bought a pack of four Holland's Cheese and Onion Pies. The cooking instructions stated they could be cooked in the oven or microwaved. I plumped for microwaving, the instructions said that the product should be cooked from frozen in an 800 microwave for THREE MINUTES! Three minutes from frozen sounded absurd, but I tried it and of course after three minutes they were almost still frozen. Thinking I was being helpful I emailed Holland, informing them that the microwave cooking instructions were way out. I received a short reply just stating that microwave cooking times vary, that was that. No apology, no promise to amend their packaging, end of subject. Lousy example of customer relations and no more Holland's pies for me!

Hi Gareth, it's definitely getting to be pie weather and I would have a nice pile of creamy mash with that minced beef and onion pie.....my second favourite is a steak and kidney, you can't beat it. What I keep thinking of lately is a beef stew with herb dumplings, haven't had a stew for ages.
