I've never tried the Harry Ramsden ones as my son only eats skinny fries or the vile southern fried chips and I seldom eat them ...although I don't really like skinny fries. Next time I'm in Iceland I'll get a bag for myself and partner when he comes for tea
Hi Gareth, firstly, you are my go to channel when I've had enough of what's going on with our world these days, as far as chips go , you can't beat home made , deep fried in beef dripping , but my favourite oven chips just now are Tesco naked, excellent stuff Gareth
Just been to Tesco today, thought I'd have a look for any chips that looked like the McCain's ones. Tesco home style straight cut chips. £1.80 I think they were. Really good and give the McCain's a run for their money. Definitely worth a review. Cook nicely and the chips are large ones.
For the last few months my regular food shopping has been from Aldi and so I have been homing in on their cheapest bag of chips almost every visit. The bag size is generous and I know I can add salt, paprika or chilli flakes if wanting to and I like to add butter sometimes. Mix the chips in the melting butter to spruce them up a little and also to help flavourings to stick.
I bought a 1.5kg pack of their crinkle chips. Cooked in an air fryer they are amazing. Really pleased I subbed to the channel otherwise I would have never bought an air fryer!
Aldis do have quite a large variety when it comes to chips. Crinkle, straight, fries, steak and some flavoured ones. As of late tho, ive been buying their crispy potato slices they do in the fruit and veg aisle.
@@BaldFoodieGuy thanks Gareth always watch your videos everything you try and recommend is helpful and spot on Aldi corale baked beans are brilliant too most shop at Aldi but the chips I always get from Lidl
Thanks for the comparison on the chips Gareth. Just bought a bag of Mc Cains, they are tasty, I agree. look forward to the 'Live' Session. Ooooohh and a Quiz. Take care mate.
Gareth, Aldi's salt content is actually less than a fifth than the MCcains one's i.e 0.09g vesus 0.43g! even lower with the Asda as well. Love your videos :) 🤩
If you can get round to it try the Homestyle Chips from Aldi. They've got a seasoned crispy coating and are really nice, should be more comparable to the McCain chips.

Interesting i enjoy the McCains straight cut and E5.99 a bag and do them in my Philips Air Fryer and a few onion rings going in also. There might be a time when i have to go yellow pack for sure. Nice review .
As soon as you started and I saw mc Cain home fry's crinkle chips, those are the oven chips for me, I've tried all sorts, but to me, they are the best! After having a chip pan fire at home when I was a child, I vowed that I'd never own a chip pan, I've never had one in my house, but the best home cooked chip, cut your chips, leave in water a few hours or overnight, day them and cook them the old fashioned way, in beef dripping, lovely light fluffy, and crispy on the outside, just like my mother used to make, and it wasn't her that left the chip pan on, it was my dad, say no more!
THAT'S VERY TRUE. IF YOU LEAVE YOUR CUT CHIPS IN WATER OVERNIGHT, WHEN YOU FRY THEM, THEY COME OUT FLUFFY ON THE INSIDE AND CRISPY ON THE OUTSIDE. HOMEMADE CHIPS ARE ALWAYS THE BEST BECAUSE THEY TASTE NATURAL AND ALSO TASTE A LOT MORE NICER THAN THE FROZEN ONES.
The thing with a lot of the supermarket branded items is that they usually come from the same place, ie, McCain's in this case, only they're the products that don't quite meet the manufacturing standard for the brand and they lack the garnishing. The nutrients you get are all the same, the only difference is the taste, and tbh, what they've added to the McCains you could probably add to the basics for a third of the price. In fact, if you're going to add salt and vinegar or ketchup anyway, you're arguably paying for additions in the McCains that you won't even taste.
I bought Asda essentials the other day but only because the only alternative (like for like) in Asda were McCain, as we didn't want French Fries. I would have bought the McCain ones, but as they contain flour my wife cannot have them - she has a gluten intolerance. I get that flavour is (very) important, but sometimes more ingredients alienates a bigger percentage of potential customers. Thanks again for this Gareth. keep up the good work!
I’d go with Aldi. Value for money. If you put as much “seasoning “ that McCain do in manufacturing of courses its going to taste different. (Not £3 worth). Plus the Aldi was better on the “traffic light” system. Great review as ever.👍
@@BaldFoodieGuy No probs, I say it like I find it. You get straight to it and not the wordy BS a lot of other reviewers give. Too fond of hearing there own voices. Again great channel. Keep growing it.
I used to buy the Aunt Bessie ones in Iceland for 99p but they stopped doing them. I buy heir ridiculously crispy ones now. They were £1.50 but have gone up to £2 recently.
I do love the tesco, crinkle and steak cut chips, not a massive bag, but they do taste good. Mccaines, are delicious, most much of a muchness. Lovely video. God bless
Dextrose is basically sugar derived from wheat. Not sure why that's needed, maybe helps the crust as it caramelises. I bought the tesco on recently as i went there instead of aldi to have a look at their prices. 1.5KG straight cut for 99p which is same price as Aldi. Couldn't tell the difference apart from the tesco one being a tad darker and crispier... but I may have cooked em longer.
Hi Gareth, You've made a comparison mistake, you should have gone for the Aldi home chips which have the coating v mcains however I don't know if a asda do an essentials home chip ?.That would have been a true comparison.
Hi Gareth. I've given up on buying brand name chips. With all the seasonings and coatings they have, the actual potato flavour of the chip is lost. So it's just the cheap chips and I sprinkle them with Vegetta vegetable stock powder and a quick toss before airfrying. Perfect chips every time. Another fine comparison review today Gareth. Cheers 🤤👍😀
People who buy the brand names clearly aren't affected by the current crisis and can afford to waste money. The cheap chips can be as good as the top brand names if you are willing to experiment which is what cooking is all about.
I buy the Aldi chips, only difference being is I deep fry them rather than doing them in the oven. Always come out golden brown and crispy and fluffy inside. I've never got on with the faff of turning them mid cooking when done in the oven!
I only use hand cut fresh chips at home but with millions of people cutting expenses £3 saving is a lot of money to anyone under financial pressure. Thanks for your time to upload these informative clips. From starting to watch your clips we are looking at prices a lot more and the difference in taste very often is not worth the extra cost.
when trying to compare different weight foods, just look at the % instead. my mum always preferred morrisons crinkle cut chips. i won't buy pre-seasoned chips as the flavours don't go with everything xxx
i used to work for a large supermarket when the pallets of frozen chips came in. in the pallet we used to get boxes of chips mixed in from all the supermarkets in the pallet there all made in the same factory we used to have to put the other supermarket cases of chips in the skips total waste of money we weren't even allowed to take them home even though the supermarket couldn't sell them
Haven't bought a packet of chips in ages I've been making triple cooked chips just cut up a potato into chips boil for 3-4 minutes, drain, pat dry, put into fryer on low for about 4-5 minutes, take out, raise oil temperature to high, leave chips to cool for 5 minutes then add to oil until crispy
I find the cheaper "value" chips to be shorter than the expensive ones like they are making them with the smaller potatoes! Often i make a curry sauce using gravey granules and curry paste and then it doesnt matter because they glue themselves together ! I cook them in my air fryer with a paddle! Very tasty
McCain's home chips all the way for me. They cook the best, usually when you oven cook chips the times are a lie and you need to cook them longer than stated. But McCain's cook really well. The texture is the best too. Oh and they're now on roll back for £3. Best place to buy the McCain's is Iceland. They have a bigger bag in their 3 for £10 mix and match. And there's loads of good stuff in that offer.
@@BaldFoodieGuy heron foods has some McCain's chips in £2 for a massive bag, they were destined for restaurants and pubs but for some reason got diverted to heron. If you're ever in a pub and the chips look formed in a factory rather than being chipped on site then they're probably McCain's.
Hi, I am enjoying your videos. I just wish you would ignor the traffic light nutrition and use the info on the back which will always list per 100g. Therefore easy to compare.
I still cook my own chips, in Lard, triple cooked, unbeatable and seasoned how I like them. But for one person it's a chore, so I make a big batch an freeze some.
Nah, proper home cooked chips every time for me, they take 3 mins to peel and chop and then about 10 minutes to deep fry, I still use lard as well as I believe it’s healthier, I know folks will disagree but for me it’s a no brainier. Frozen fries and chips often get stuck in my throat, same with McDonald’s. Good review though. Cheers x
So many oven chips on the market. I think you took a good sample and always thank for honest views. Glad to see the sub numbers are going up you must be doing something right.
ALDI Skins On Chips, very good value, but more importantly the best frozen chips I've ever bought, nicely seasoned, crispy, medium thickness. Better then anything I've ever tried elsewhere, and cook in about 25-28 minutes. Try them!
McCains Naked chips would have been better for a comparison as they don’t have a coating and are regular size and usually cheaper than the Home Fries. I actually prefer the Naked ones over the thicker coated ones as they are just potatoes with a bit of oil and only take 15mins to cook and cheaper. Great for quick weekday dinners
@@BaldFoodieGuy they aren’t usually expensive tbh even though they are McCains brand I think they are usually £2ish per bag at co-op but nobody ever seems to buy them so I clear the fridge when they get reduced to clear for 75p per bag haha
@@BaldFoodieGuy also I won’t buy name brand stuff unless it’s on offer or reduced, I stick to supermarket own brands or off brands because I find they usually have less of the bad ingredients in and ALOT cheaper with only marginal difference if any as your great reviews show time and again
Aldi 4 Seasons Crinkle Cut red hot from the halogen oven/air fryer are the business, no extra oil needed, salt, vinegar & ketchup, never had Asda crinkle dont know if they do crinkle I prefer crinkle. Last night I had Aldi Four Seasons Crinkle with half tin of Asda Essential steak in gravy (pie filling) . It was TASTY. 😁😎
Just watched your video for McConnell aldi Just essential chips 🍟 I think it's down to personal taste and also more importantly budget, we had aldi chips last week and really there wasn't much difference 😀 good review 😀
It also depends on how you prepare them. My 10 old Philips Airfryer made McDonalds quality fries, the new Ninja Foodie delux does not turn out that great.
Guys, you can make your own. It's so simple. Cut potatoes (the right potatoes though for the job) with their skins into chips or a bit bigger. Seasons them with whatever you want and drizzle your favourite oil on them. That's a 5 min job. Then cook them as you would these frozen chips 20-25mins. Infinitely better chips.
I do like the Mccains chips but, they are to expensive for me to justify buying them now, so i have been buying iceland brand chips their not as good but cheap the best iceland brand chips so far are the ones in beef dripping they are really nice if you can find them aldi also do them and i expect they are both packed in the same place .
Just make your own chips from potatoes. Cheaper and so much better without all the preservatives. Frozen chips are fine if you are in a rush but if you actually enjoy food make your own. 🙂
I do home made chips with sea salt black pepper and paprika after blanching them for 3 minutes oven for 20 minutes lovely anyway great video has always
I usually cook my own potatoes from scratch. The thing is that sunflower seed oil, (& other seed oils,) have components, that turn into toxic aldehydes, when cooked. Look it up, it has all been researched. So I prefer things that have been cooked in Olive Oil. Also of course if you cook your own you can choose what you put on them, roll them in paprika or whatever. Could you please do a video on which are the most economical Olive oils to use?
Dude.... this is said with love, honestly: Read the numbers (salt percentages, etc) accurately, please. You mentioned a couple of times so far "Nought point 9 grams!!", and similar things... hmm, is was 0.09g. (And similarly wrong for the Aldi one) Take care, keep up the great work, love you xxx
@@BaldFoodieGuy I know mate, hence why I was careful with my words. I hope you know I wasn't being pedantic, just trying to help with your inciteful and unbiased review :)
@@BaldFoodieGuy the front should be ignored anyway, as they all have different portion sizes, this is the case in lots of the videos. The back of these had the info per 100g cooked, that is the good comparison. The portions on the front are usually stupidly small too, so they can get green or yellow lights on the system they are making a mockery of.
if im cooking for me self i dice up fresh spuds, i deep fry them, but if we having home made fish n chips for me and the wife i prefer to blanch the chips then air-fry them as regular shaped chips, cheaper and just as tasty... even better if you have airdried crispy bacon and then grind it over the chips in a salt grinder...
I've never met a frozen chip I didn't like. I'm more than happy with the cheapest chips so those Aldi or Asda chips would be fine for me. You'll probably find all the cheap chips come from the same factory. Those aldi and asda chips look identical. Ok perhaps the Aldi pack got a bit more oil than the asda pack but they pretty much look the same. I think I've tried all the cheap chips from all the supermarkets and I have no preference.
Yeah it’s another ‘get what you pay for’. I’ve bought the really cheap ones lately and they’re ok for a weekday meal, with lots of seasoning. Otherwise it’s McCain all day long.
I think that Aldi and Lidl are disappointing when it comes to the standard oven chip - I just find them so bland. There's usually a better selection available in ASDA, where I much prefer to buy the Albert Bartlett crinkle-cut chips. Saying that, both Aldi and Lidl do a very good Sweet Potato Fries.
I like these comparison videos, and also how you tend to focus on stuff that normal people can afford. Makes a difference from all the channels that have '£500 steak' or stupid things like that 😆
I always used to have Iceland steak cut chip's for a quid but recently virtually halved the size of the bag!!..Decided to try Aldi four seasons steak cut and they really are good!!
one of the areas for me,where i find it hard to find a cheaper substitute, the mccains do taste much better, problem i find with cheaper brands is,cut thin,in oven some just turn to crispy bits, lots of really small chips in bag,but costwise, mccains are over the top, some of the cheaper potato croquettes arent bad, more potato, cook better, good alternative to chips
Hi, I don’t know if anyone has already said but you said the Aldi ones were high in salt but they are actually very low in salt, you got the point in the wrong place when you were reading out the figures, the McCain are by the far the highest salt. I hope you don’t mind me pointing it out.
Great review. Hard to compare the one with the coating with the other two though. Can you do a comparison on the chips that have coating from Aldi and Asda...?
To be fair, I'd rather buy the option with more potato in the chip, seasoning is cheap to DIY. But IRL I just make my own chips with potatoes, microwaved to soften, then in the oven.
Hi Gareth, I tried those McCain Gastro triple cooked chips last week and for frozen chips they were pretty nice, I got them on offer but at full price they are quite expensive for a smallish bag, nearly £4. Think I'll give some of these cheaper options a try. Thank you, these comparison videos are excellent and really helpful too especially in this current climate whilst food shopping is getting so expensive. Enjoy the rest of your week 😊

Although Mc Cains tastes great, do we really want all the additives added, I hadn't realized they weren't 100% potato until watching this video. Aren't chips supposed to be potatoes? I'd rather stick with fewer ingredients on/in my chips and season myself from now on and save money too.
As a canadian viewer who stumbled across some of your videos I'm just shocked at how cheap alot of the food is in the UK, just shocked. In ontario canada here a lousy 1kg bag (thats .5 to .6 kg less) of store brand "chips" runs about $2 CDN (1.33 pound) and $4 (2.66 pound) for McCain, Cavendish or other name brand ones. The burgers video you did that where like 4.60 pound for 10, we pay 9-13$ CDN (6 to 8.5 pounds) for a pack like that, wow, inflation is killing us here.
i agree. here in bc the cost of food is going through the roof. things here are triple the cost than in the uk. for this video a small bag of chips in kanada is almost 3 quid. i wish i still lived in england
The Mccain frozen chips are definitely on another level. Crispy, fluffy and always come out delicious. Sure, you pay more but i think it's worth it.
No from me due to the additives

So many oven chips on the market. I think you took a good sample and always thank for honest views. Glad to see the sub numbers are going up you must be doing something right.
thanks very much
ALDI Skins On Chips, very good value, but more importantly the best frozen chips I've ever bought, nicely seasoned, crispy, medium thickness. Better then anything I've ever tried elsewhere, and cook in about 25-28 minutes. Try them!
Thanks for the tips!
MC Cain all way for me, but wash your hands after all the grease on them. Great review
yes i did wash my hands
Doing the tests that matter. Great video.
Thanks
I like Aldi Skin on Chips but for taste I like making my own 😋
McCains Naked chips would have been better for a comparison as they don’t have a coating and are regular size and usually cheaper than the Home Fries. I actually prefer the Naked ones over the thicker coated ones as they are just potatoes with a bit of oil and only take 15mins to cook and cheaper. Great for quick weekday dinners
Yes I don't eat the expensive ones so missed them sorry
@@BaldFoodieGuy they aren’t usually expensive tbh even though they are McCains brand I think they are usually £2ish per bag at co-op but nobody ever seems to buy them so I clear the fridge when they get reduced to clear for 75p per bag haha
@@BaldFoodieGuy also I won’t buy name brand stuff unless it’s on offer or reduced, I stick to supermarket own brands or off brands because I find they usually have less of the bad ingredients in and ALOT cheaper with only marginal difference if any as your great reviews show time and again
@@upgrade8280 nice one yes get them while they are cheap. These crinkle ones are tasty.
You can get 2.5Kg potatoes from asda for 1.09.. homemade chips beat frozen chips any day of the week and so much cheaper!
good information
Aldi 4 Seasons Crinkle Cut red hot from the halogen oven/air fryer are the business, no extra oil needed, salt, vinegar & ketchup, never had Asda crinkle dont know if they do crinkle I prefer crinkle. Last night I had Aldi Four Seasons Crinkle with half tin of Asda Essential steak in gravy (pie filling) . It was TASTY. 😁😎
Cheers Jev, all the best pal. Think this was before I had my air fryer.
Crinkle cut are always dearer than straight cut chips just because they use a different blade to cut the chips
Have the McCains on the weekend and the other for everyday.
Just watched your video for McConnell aldi Just essential chips 🍟 I think it's down to personal taste and also more importantly budget, we had aldi chips last week and really there wasn't much difference 😀 good review 😀
cheers Sue
It also depends on how you prepare them. My 10 old Philips Airfryer made McDonalds quality fries, the new Ninja Foodie delux does not turn out that great.
Cheers Tom
We dont use many chips but I dont think we would pay 4x the price of aldi for a bag of McCain's.aldi are fine if cooked properly x
Is the air fryer worth buying? Is it cheaper to run than the oven?
Yes it is. Depends on the size of course.
Cheers pal
I do like the Mccains chips but, they are to expensive for me to justify buying them now, so i have been buying iceland brand chips their not as good but cheap the best iceland brand chips so far are the ones in beef dripping they are really nice if you can find them aldi also do them and i expect they are both packed in the same place .
Just make your own chips from potatoes. Cheaper and so much better without all the preservatives. Frozen chips are fine if you are in a rush but if you actually enjoy food make your own. 🙂
Cheers pal
Spot on and deep fried. None of this oven rubbish! 😁
Freshly cooked chips, from raw potatoes, are ridiculously easy to do in an air fryer, almost no oil, taste great even without being seasoned, I think.
Great review 👍
Cheers
I do home made chips with sea salt black pepper and paprika after blanching them for 3 minutes oven for 20 minutes lovely anyway great video has always
Cheers pal
I usually cook my own potatoes from scratch. The thing is that sunflower seed oil, (& other seed oils,) have components, that turn into toxic aldehydes, when cooked. Look it up, it has all been researched. So I prefer things that have been cooked in Olive Oil. Also of course if you cook your own you can choose what you put on them, roll them in paprika or whatever.
Could you please do a video on which are the most economical Olive oils to use?
Thank you 👌
Thanks for another honest review 💜💜💜
Does anyone know which brand Weatherspoon's use in their pubs? I like them lots :) Just cant get enough on a portion!
I don't sorry.
Dude.... this is said with love, honestly:
Read the numbers (salt percentages, etc) accurately, please.
You mentioned a couple of times so far "Nought point 9 grams!!", and similar things... hmm, is was 0.09g. (And similarly wrong for the Aldi one)
Take care, keep up the great work, love you xxx
Yes made a mistake only human 👌
@@BaldFoodieGuy I know mate, hence why I was careful with my words. I hope you know I wasn't being pedantic, just trying to help with your inciteful and unbiased review :)
@@BaldFoodieGuy the front should be ignored anyway, as they all have different portion sizes, this is the case in lots of the videos. The back of these had the info per 100g cooked, that is the good comparison. The portions on the front are usually stupidly small too, so they can get green or yellow lights on the system they are making a mockery of.
@@Grentastic your perfect mate cheers, sometimes I need it 👌👌
if im cooking for me self i dice up fresh spuds, i deep fry them, but if we having home made fish n chips for me and the wife i prefer to blanch the chips then air-fry them as regular shaped chips, cheaper and just as tasty...
even better if you have airdried crispy bacon and then grind it over the chips in a salt grinder...
Hi Gareth the Aldi had much lower salt than the McCains
Yes did I get them mixed up apologies if I did.
Cheers pal
I make my own skinny or wedges or steak cut in the Air fryer Honestly delicious
delicious 😋
Yeah it’s another ‘get what you pay for’. I’ve bought the really cheap ones lately and they’re ok for a weekday meal, with lots of seasoning. Otherwise it’s McCain all day long.
Cheers pal 👍
I think that Aldi and Lidl are disappointing when it comes to the standard oven chip - I just find them so bland. There's usually a better selection available in ASDA, where I much prefer to buy the Albert Bartlett crinkle-cut chips. Saying that, both Aldi and Lidl do a very good Sweet Potato Fries.
Cheers Fred
You can just go with the percentages as that won't change with different weights
McCain are overrated in my view. Nothing wrong with cheapo chips. I prefer them. But not had chips for about a year now. Cheers for the review.
cheers Geoff
what they don't tell you is what type of potato they use, makes a huge difference
Good point
Aldi Skin on fries are lovely x
Yes they are good x
You are often paying for the ‘name’.
You don’t eat the name you eat the chip.
This applies to many other products as well.
I like these comparison videos, and also how you tend to focus on stuff that normal people can afford. Makes a difference from all the channels that have '£500 steak' or stupid things like that 😆
thanks 😊
I always used to have Iceland steak cut chip's for a quid but recently virtually halved the size of the bag!!..Decided to try Aldi four seasons steak cut and they really are good!!
Try the Albert Bartlett chips they are the best
one of the areas for me,where i find it hard to find a cheaper substitute, the mccains do taste much better, problem i find with cheaper brands is,cut thin,in oven some just turn to crispy bits, lots of really small chips in bag,but costwise, mccains are over the top, some of the cheaper potato croquettes arent bad, more potato, cook better, good alternative to chips
Hi, I don’t know if anyone has already said but you said the Aldi ones were high in salt but they are actually very low in salt, you got the point in the wrong place when you were reading out the figures, the McCain are by the far the highest salt. I hope you don’t mind me pointing it out.
Cheers yes thank you Lorraine
Great review.
Hard to compare the one with the coating with the other two though.
Can you do a comparison on the chips that have coating from Aldi and Asda...?
thanks 😊
been a while since i had any but I always used to get the odd chip that tasted rank, like cheesy feet? anyone?
Mccain on offer at iceland 2 bags for 4.50p .x
Good information Susan
Not a comparison mate the other ones were not coated but good vid buddy
Cheers
Why the hell are they putting dextrose which is a sugar on chips?
Brilliant review mate as usual keep up the good work 👍
Cheers Dean
Love your videos anyway buddy!
thanks
To be fair, I'd rather buy the option with more potato in the chip, seasoning is cheap to DIY. But IRL I just make my own chips with potatoes, microwaved to soften, then in the oven.
great vid but im old i like my chips deep fried and home are the best but i have always liked asda own chips
Cheers
Hi Gareth, I tried those McCain Gastro triple cooked chips last week and for frozen chips they were pretty nice, I got them on offer but at full price they are quite expensive for a smallish bag, nearly £4. Think I'll give some of these cheaper options a try. Thank you, these comparison videos are excellent and really helpful too especially in this current climate whilst food shopping is getting so expensive. Enjoy the rest of your week 😊
yes they are tasty the triple cooked ones, yum. Have a good one too x
Those triple cooked are the best oven chips we've had. The bigger bag is better value but still pricey.
@Janet Pratt Alright, Karen.
aldi and other supermarkets do a own brand triple cooked aswell those are nice too and they have beef dripping
@@BaldFoodieGuy Gaz, do yourself a favour buddy and shadow ban this ‘Janet’ character. They joined a week ago and have targeted your channel for trolling.
Mccain supply McDonald's with their French fries,
But when you get them from the supermarket they don't seem to taste the same.
I’m quite happy with the Aldi ones which we have in our house. Can’t eat the McCain ones. As I always put it, they are poisonous to me.
Although Mc Cains tastes great, do we really want all the additives added, I hadn't realized they weren't 100% potato until watching this video. Aren't chips supposed to be potatoes? I'd rather stick with fewer ingredients on/in my chips and season myself from now on and save money too.
Yes I agree you can put what you want on the cheap ones and save money.
Cheers Marcus lovely in Canada. Went there while serving in the forces 👍👍🍁
