  • It was adventure time and we set out to find a good rock spot on Kawau Island. The little fish did a good job of taking all our bait but we had a few options throughout the day to keep the bait coming. Right at the end of the day, I managed to snag a good one.

    Nice video ! Question how do you catch fish during day and not dawn or dusk and what's your go to rig for rocky or Kelp spots?

      Fishing spots that aren't disturbed by other fishermen and have fairly deep water close by (6-20M) and lots of kelpy reef will hold fish during the bright parts of the day. Entice them into biting with a good berley trail. Here's a video on my set up for fishing in the kelp and off the rocks ua-cam.com/video/IX7XU62w5Os/v-deo.html

      One more thing what would be your time to go fishing ? High tide or low tide or outgoing or incoming and thanks for your help your a legend

      @@krystalkaraka3229 The last 2 hours of the outgoing seems to be a good overall bite period but it will also depend on the place you are fishing, sometimes there are local variations - like if the place is shallow, low tide may not be that good.

    Have you ever caught a land based skipjack tuna on any of your Nth land trips?

    • @DIGITALFISHContentthatcatches
      @DIGITALFISHContentthatcatches  3 роки тому

      Yes, just the one, at Spirit's Bay. I have seen them just out of casting distance a few times around Karikari Peninsula. One summer I saw what looked a lot like yellowfin busting up maybe 200 meters out. Too big for kahawai, fast and explosive, cutting the water like a tuna. So close.....

      @@DIGITALFISHContentthatcatches A well known land based angler from the 80s and 90s Gary Kemsley did an article in Rod & Rifle magazine about a session he had at Kape Kari Kari where they caught some skip jack tuna spinning off the rocks.

      @@rtempler7 Yeah I remember that story. He hooked a yellowfin off the rocks in Niue but lost it. Pete Lamb landed a yellowfin (small one) off the rocks at Cape Brett. A few years ago I know a few guys who caught skippies off Kawau, late summer when the skippies came in close...I spoke to a South African guy who identified albacore at Hamilton's gap in the waves and in NZFN some guys down in Napier landed albacore off the beach. Rare but it does happen. Trying to target them is pretty difficult. You have to have a good casting outfit and watch the water for when they porpoise within casting range, right place at the right time.

      @@DIGITALFISHContentthatcatches I loved Rod & RIfle back in those days it wasn't all about the gear like it is now! I live in Aus now and regularly catch Mack Tuna and Long Tails off a ledge in QLD between September and Xmas, fairly shallow water too!

      @@rtempler7 Jealous, wish we had more variety here to catch spinning etc... I lived over there for a few years, got a mack tuna and bonito up to 4kg and a huge KY/salmon, went 7kg....
