Rock Fishing Coromandel - snapper and sharks, koheru and kahawai - good times.

Jody Waaka, the Maori fishing legend and I landed on a small island in the Coromandel during a good moon phase and had a pretty exciting rock fishing session with some good snapper and a few encounters with bronze whaler sharks. Surprisingly, I caught a few blue koheru which are dynamite kingfish baits but sadly the bronies got there first. The tide and wave formation made fishing challenging but it was all part of the adventure.....

far out i think ur the 1st person on landing koheru landbased! haha that is so epic as. a shame that it got wasted on a shark though.

I have caught them around Tawharanui before but there's only been a couple of times the last 40 odd years I have caught them off the rocks....quite rare. Yeah gutted the bronzies ate them so quickly....

How so send that Live bait away from the shore? Or it just swims around there? But it wouldnt spoil your chances?

The live bait will usually swim out from shore. There was also a strong current sweeping past our ledge that helped take it out. Kingfish often swim past in the current.
