When I was a little kid, I was ambidextrous, but my 1st grade teacher (I was 7) told me to pick a hand and stick with it because she hated that my writing always had a slight difference when I would hand in my work. I chose my right hand, unfortunately, I slowly lost the ability to write with my left hand. Years later, I am now learning how to write with my left hand again. It's pretty messy but its getting better. This video helped me learn some tactics to keep the improvement going, I'm glad I found this video, thank you!

    • @DownfallDarkness
      @DownfallDarkness Рік тому +1

I'm sure your 1st grade teacher had your best interest in mind, but at the same time-man... In hindsight; it's not really a teacher's place to be making those kinds of judgements to begin with (especially in dealing with impressionable youth).
I believe that ambidexterity is something we're all capable of attaining (and should be encouraged to do so). I'm 25 as I write this comment, and I've been leaning in to my left-handedness the ENTIRE ¼ of my life.
When I was really young-I even had a really bad habit of only using my left hand to type when using a keyboard. My excuse was, it was more 'comfortable'. When in the grander scheme of things; this kind of mentality is NOT good.
I was also a very stubborn kid and neglected the wise advice I was once given by an adult to practice typing with both hands because it was the traditional/conventional way of typing.
I just completed filling two seperate pages with one sentence today; one with my left hand and one with my right.
I'm gonna do the same for the alphabet (uppercase and lowercase) and geometric shapes.
It's only Day 1 and I'm feeling (and seeing) the visual difference, and it's very interesting! Truly like looking at a live journal of my writing as a present-day adult, back to when I was a kid barely knowing how to write/even hold a pen properly.
Confidence is key. Perfection isn't just given out-but earned.
Practice makes perfect! I will become ambidextrous.

    I'm 2+ years in the same project(daily).
I'm getting really close to a perfect point! I've truly done it all and mastered the most! I've even learned other abilities by doing it, like juggling 4 balls, boxing + weaker stance(southpaw), drawing, throwing and many more.
    It's amazing.
I can't really describe the mental struggle I went through but it's an unforgettable experience & experiment for me!
I even suffered from a tendon inflammation because some of my hand muscles were over loaded while the other muscles were "asleep" and an imbalance occured. - That's by the way exactly what you felt in your video, when you said that you feel like you put too much weight on your wrist and can't 'feel it' etc.
It's because all your micro muscles that do all the fine motor movements are weak and uncoordinated.
But it seems like with time and practice you suddenly learn to controll all of the necessary muscles! To a Comfortable point!!
I'm great with both hands 🤗
    My 2 cents.

Wow that is so amazing!! I have always had a fascination with left-handedness. No clue why, just completely fascinated. I am 25 and grew up playing piano from a very young age, so I have an advantage with use of my left hand and have never found left hand writing that DIFFICULT mentally, but just the stamina of my hand is poor with writing. How long have you been at this for? Do you feel completely comfortable writing with your left now? I’m fascinated

    • @Blingoose
      @Blingoose 5 років тому +3

      @@color2066
People like you definitely have some advantage :) Piano is a damn great thing.
As mentioned above, around 2.5 years, every single day. Sometimes even more than 3 hours a day.
At first I'd fill 2 A4 pages with just the letters:
      aaaaaaaaaaaa
      AAAAA
      And so on.
Done it for about a month+ untill felt pretty comfortable, especially with all the round letters.
After a while I made a daily habbit to fill an A4 page with thoughts and wishes and kept doing it for more than 2 years.
I also practiced drawing steady lines, curves, forms and such (it's very close to writing) and other activities that contribute to my mission.
The most important thing you should do is to pay attention! Try to feel anything uncomfortable and work on that.
Don't worry about the "hand eye coordination" it'll get better and better as you go.
Mimic your dominant hand as much as possible and believe that you'll get past the "It doesn't feel right/natural"
      :)
Yeah, I can write very well now and comfy :)
And I can play billiard with whatever hand I want.

Andre Katov WOW thanks for the thorough reply! That is just absolutely excellent! I think tomorrow morning when I wake up I will begin practicing again, thanks to your inspiration fueling motivation in me :) I agree with you, feeling out the weaknesses is very important so we can learn what to work on. This might sound odd but my handwriting with my left hand comes out so much better if I write quickly than if I try to slow down and make it perfect. I have a lot of style in the handwriting and so I think it covers up the weaknesses, like my letters O’s and M’s. Do you slow down when you practice your weaker spots? I also agree that drawing is amazing work. I paint a lot of landscapes and plan to try with my left hand. Drawing is harder though :) Congrats on your success!!

Luke Brown Learns I’m naturally right handed but about 18 months ago I practiced doing 1 handed texting with my LEFT hand when I was sat on the sofa incase I dropped my phone & now I always use my left hand even when I’m walking around but still can handle it just as good with my right hand, I've also started picking up my cup of tea & drinks with my left hand, one weird thing is I've ALWAYS held my Knife & Fork the left handed way round & until my mid teens I wore my watch the left handed way round but I created a challenge for myself to see how long I could go wearing it the right handed way round but EVENTUALLY I got so used to it that I always wear it the right handed way round now but it doesn’t feel weird on the original arm I wore it on, actually I might try wearing it on the original arm I wore it on, I’ve even been practicing writing with my left hand, first I practiced the full alphabet in lower case & capitals & now I’ve began practicing writing sentences in joined up writing with my left hand & it’s getting neater & not taking as long as it did when I first started practicing writing with my left hand

9:30 “ The utility of writing with both hands is impractical.” I am a lefty. I had a serious bicycle accident two weeks ago, shattering my left wrist. It is “out of commission” for two months. Out of necessity, I am learning to write with my right hand. Oh, had I only learned to do this growing up, I wouldn’t be in the pickle I’m in now…File this suggestion in your “you never know“ file!

I've been learning to draw, write and generally use my right hand for a week or two now, it is kinda useful for when you wanna switch things up, and this is actually pretty inspiring.
I've also noticed my right hand tends to write in a very simple and professional way, while my left hand tends to be more squashed and fast paced, being slightly leaning but not in a bad way. It was quite interesting to see

Leftie here. I am trying to learn the palmer method of business handwriting with my right hand. What makes it hard is that you don't move your fingers or wrist at all. All the motion is done with the bigger muscles in your arm. I usually get really into it for awhile then life takes over and i forget about it until some months later, but I have made alot of progress overall. I try and do as much with my right hand as possible. Phone goes in right pocket, I do my belt up the oposite way now ect.

I'm a lefty, but in the fourth grade I broke my left wrist. I got tired of having to dictate my answers to the teacher and decided I'd just try to write right-handed. She said it looked better than my left-handed writing (I had horrible handwriting for a long time). It's weird because it came really naturally to me at the time, but I've tried it again since and haven't been able to do it.

I write with a pen with my left hand. When I write on a chalkboard or whiteboard, I write with my right hand. This is because it was always hard to keep a straight line and also smearing. I am considering trying to write right-handed as I would like to get into fountain pens. I can right without too much smearing with my left with a fountain pen, but when I hold one in my right had it feels much more natural and the angle of the nip is in a better position. Plus, I've hear it is more arm movement and less finger and wrist movement with fountain pens. It's slow going, but I'm making progress.

It seems the last comments on this video were about 5 years ago but I wanted to answer your question about whether a truly ambidextrous person exists. And the answer is yes. When I was a little girl I had a babysitter and she could write with both hands in opposite directions and in the same direction at the same time it wasn't something she taught herself it was something she was born withit, she could also write upside down with both hands in either direction or opposite directions and both handwritings were beautiful. It was an amazing thing to see!!
As a child my left hand was tied down and I was taught to write and eat with my right hand but they failed to control all the other things that I did with my left hand. Because of this my right hand became a bit more dominant by about age 2 1/2 and I was sitting on the floor writing in a little pad of paper and telling my left hand that it wasn't allowed to write until it could write as good as my right hand and I continued to write with my right hand from then on. Skip forward almost 60 years and I had practiced off and on trying to use my left hand again but it always felt uncomfortable except for the things that it could do very well with were most things. The things that weren't controlled. But I got a muscle disorder and ended up in a power wheelchair and when learning to drive it they set it for my right hand and I couldn't drive or control it at all. And then I realized I'm a left-handed driver so I told him to switch the controller to the left side and I was able to drive it easily and very well right away. So I resumed practicing writing with my left hand and became more serious about it and now I'm able to write very nicely with my left hand and it feels at home. It's still has a little bit of fine motor deficit but it's my go to and I feel restored. My wrting is more uniform than my right hand and my thoughts are more connected to my left so I don't make as many mistakes as I did with my right hand. I think I was naturally mixed use or what they call cross dominant but I know I definitely was left handed. From what you say you sound like you are cross dominant also and there are many advantages to that. If you feel inclined to write with your right hand, keep practicing and don't give up. As for those claiming to be truly ambidextrous... that is quite a rare thing and veryVERY few people truly are. Simply writing with both hands does not make someone ambidextrous. Ambidextrousness comes from birth and a person can write forwards backwards upside down in the same direction or opposite directions AT THE SAME TIME. They can do all things equally as well on both sides. I would have been a skeptic if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes.

However I never stopped or lost the ability to write with my right hand. I can switch back-and-forth from either hand and my handwriting looks the exact same. My left eye is dominant. I ride a scooter and skateboard goofy (right foot in front, kick with left foot) but kick balls with my right.
My right hand is dominant for most things though. So I'm trying to do different things with the left hand. Put toothpaste on a toothbrush and brush with the left. Pick things up and set them down with the left. And yes, write with the left.
I'd also like to learn how to play a left-handed guitar, because the ring finger of my left hand doesn't fold (it was cut when I was little) and I can't play some chords with the left hand since the finger covers lower strings. That would be the ultimate challenge

I know someone who is truly ambidextrous she found out because of an assignment in a class that we had to write every day with the opposite hand and she was told to redo it because it was too good.
I am ambidextrous with almost everything except writing and painting on paper I paint with both hands, on objects and I can play most sports with both hands too so I say I'm ambidextrous except with writing

The thing is, even if you’re naturally ambidextrous a lot of people don’t know because they were forced to choose a hand when learning to write, and the other hand never learnt, or lost the skill a little. Being naturally ambidextrous is starting every NEW sport or activity with no preference, and feeling just as comfortable with each side. (Also from what I’ve seen if they decide to re-learn the other side, it often comes quicker/easier because they’re obviously more inclined to be able to do it)

My left hand writing and right hand writing are totally different. I don't like crossing midline so I do stuff on my left with my left hand and stuff on my rightwith my right hand. When I was t teacher I'd start on theleft, write to midline, the switch to my right. My students would always freak out!

I'm right-handed. I write cursive with my right hand. When using my left hand My cursive seems to be all backwards so I have to use print with my left. So no matter what I can always tell my right hand from my left hand cause of the different handwriting it's so weird. My dad is both left-handed and right-handed but he is more dominant using his left hand but because he has to have surgery on his left he has to use his right which isn't as good as his left hand. I'm a high school student so practising righting with both my hands shouldn't be difficult. I write using my right when doing stuff in my book and when I have free time in class or at home ill write with my left hand.

This is the same with skateboarding, we have a dominate foot placing on the board (Goofy/Regular). Learning to do/ride in switch is almost riding backwards its really hard to explain but its the same feeling as writing with your less-dominant hand.

I thought i was left handed my whole but then i found out that i may be mixed handed. Broke my left hand 2 days ago so trying to use my right hand to study. It feels very annoying but i realised that i am actually better at getting used to my non dominant hand than other people. It is probably because i use my right hand for other tasks as much as my left hand. I hope i can learn to write smoothly with my right.

Did writing righty ever feel easier from left to right?
Surely writing right to left is easier as a righty in the same way as it should be easier to write Arabic (right to left) as a lefty.

So I bat right handed naturally. Last year I tried to bat left handed as well as right handed. I found I was able to make contact but could not get a line drive for my life or go the other way. It felt like there was more I could do with my right side than my left side. I throw right handed but have sometimes tried to throw left handed and have just found it impossible. My arm just doesn't know what to do or where to go and my lower body doesn't know what it is doing either. I think that maybe if I kept up the switch hitting, i.e hitting with both sides, I probably could have become as good if not better on my left side but with throwing that shit is just impossible. I mean there was a guy who could throw with both hands in the majors for awhile but he sucked and was out of pro ball in like a year.

I tried writing cursive with my left hand and I could not believe how easy it was. I even tried using my mouse in my left hand and it did not make a difference. I guess I am not right handed. I thought I was right handed. I am going to do more writing with my left hand. Oh and by the way no one forced me to write with my right hand. So I think ambidexterity is a thing and it occurs naturally.

I'm left-handed. I'm leaning to write with my right hand, and it seems a lot easier to write with if I only use whole arm movements.
My left handed finger writing looks great, but whenever I'm not in my exact writing position it looks god awful.
So I'm learning with my right hand, and hoping that I can be proficient with it so I can enjoy writing more.
Also, interestingly when I practice with my right hand, I'll start using my phone right handed (scrolling, typing, etc) I've played video games on a controller my whole life, and used a right handed mouse, so I've definitely had some passive practice.
Another thing I'd like to mention is there have been times when my mind was focused on something different entirely, and I'll pick up a pen in my right hand and write with it perfectly.
    Cool video!
