It /is/ kind of a dark song.
The song has always been about being depressed and self inflicted anguish over being broken up with. There never was anything light about this song.
The sheer disgust on Violet's face at some of the lyrics... Yeah, I'm not a Britney fan, but I don't think this song was ever not "dark" and laced with a bit of self-loathing.
I've always had a soft spot for happy sounding songs with not so happy meanings, so maybe I'm reading too much into it.
