I would love to see Burbot back in the UK as you said if Trout and Pike can live happily in our rivers Burbot should be able to flourish! Bring back the Burbot I say! Please 😊😊😊
if your talking about the 2007 study that was always just about feasibility and was looking for another group to actually reintroduce which never happened.
I'm all for reintroduction! It's all about history and diversity. I'm pretty sure that this Belgian nursery would share their technology experiences with Calverton Fish Farm and then they could breed thousands.
There is no reason why we can’t try and reintroduce the Burbot and as you correctly said they are still living in some European countries with weather conditions and temperatures similar to ours and now that we have pollution under control we could at least give them a try as I strongly believe that this is one animal that we could bring back to the U.K. after all the Wells catfish and Zander have been introduced from some of the countries that hold Burbot so why not reintroduce them
Fantastic video! Thank you for dispelling the myths about water quality and climate change doing the UK burbot in, and very interesting to know about its impact on invasive species. Thank you.
Probably a bearded rockling or a butterfish. Burbot (Lota lota) are a freshwater species that were only ever found in eastern flowing rivers from County Durham, Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and East Anglia.
You guys probably are looking in the wrong place for them. They need cold clean water and thrive in lakes with no access for migration needed. Scottish lakes would be the place to look for them. Juveniles can be found under rocks and logs daytime even in shallow water. To catch one, fish from the ice at winter, night time. I bet UK anglers don't do that. You can also use a boat in December just before any ice forms. A big shiny lure with a single hook and a leader of 5 cm. Baited with a piece of herring or what not. Then bounce the lure in the bottom with regular pauses. Or use a dead bait on the bottom and just wait. During other seasons they are basically impossible to catch. I bet Loch Ness monster is big Burbots.
All the historical evidence indicates that in the UK, the Burbot was limited to eastern flowing English rivers, as far north as County Durham. None in Scotland, or even Northumberland.
The easiest way to determine if Burbots are present in any water is to look for their juveniles. The hide under rocks near the shoreline. Start lifting and see. You will find crawfish as well etc. In some lakes you lift ten rocks and you will find 3 Burbots in average.
@@portcullis5622He's not far wrong from an environment point of view though. The first burbot I ever saw all came from deep glacial lakes in Switzerland; Lake Constance, Lake Neuchatel and Lake Maggiore for instance.
I got a Lota lota pleasure from watching this. It would be great to know that they are back in an English river.
( a lot of)
@@creatureswithcalvin3084 I presume that you didn't get the joke then?! Look up the scientific name for burbot.
Such a shame that burbot aren’t present in the UK anymore. Such a great documentary style video
Really enjoyed that Jack, Would be wonderful to see a resurgence of the Burbot in our rivers!
Wonderful, the idea of river cod!!! Hope they are brought back!

Wow,I'd love to see them back
I caught one in the late 80s in North devon it was recorded in the North devon journal small about 7 inches long
Very interesting. Hopefully they will be back soon.
EA should be bringing them back. The last was caught 50 odd years ago.

Seems like with the reintroduction of beaver that increase size of the flooded forest areas might help the candidacy for a reintroduction
bring back the burbot bring back to us bring back
I know in england were there is some living near clacton in tilde river
That's great feel free to send over hard evidence
Not heard of the River Tilde before.
Why doesn't anyone just release them anyway. People did it with current invasives everywhere. If it was native, just release some

One of the best tasting fish on earth! Sadly, they wouldn't last 5 mins in the UK due to lack of respect for laws by certain settlers...
When I mentioned Burbot to my angling friends, 30 yrs ago...they laughed and said "No such thing"...not laughing now!!...thanks
I am sure they will be back one day, but we need to reduce the number of signal crayfish first.
Any reintroduction plans?
It would be lovely to see them return as they do make quite a good target for anglers and are also great eating.

Bro I caught one at Brighton

In France, it is more common to see burbots in lakes than in rivers.
