@@Filsoh Matty has always seemed honest about his reviews. If he doesn't like something, he says that he doesn't like it. He always seems to be doing honest reviews.
He said outright that the content is sponsored. Honest as always. But between the lines, I think it seems to me that he didn’t like the game? Some things he: jank, generic protagonist, bad voice acting, very little to do in the open world, short story with a lot of exposition, not much variation in the environments and game play, and many others. Given the many good games we can choose between in a similar price range, not a great recommendation it seems to me.
Time is expensive. For both players and content creators. They have to pick and choose which games to pay attention to so they don't "waste" 10-20 hours of playing the game they're not sure others are going to be interested in.
I started playing the demo but it is on a 20 min countdown timer. I liked walking around and talking to npc's but I quickly ran out of time before I got to see what the real gameplay is all about. I have it on my wishlist but the price is just a bit high for me right now
Digital Foundry did a comprehensive overview and retrospective of this new game and the original. Also, SpawnWave did a sponsored video as well, which I skipped because he’s started plugging ads, sponsored content, memberships and Patreon crap to an obscene degree lately. He’s on track to catch up to MBG. If it keeps up he’ll be standing in the intersection with a collection bucket like your local fire company.
Reminds me alot of when I bought tons of random games back on my 360 and PS2 and played them. I enjoyed the random hidden gems like what this appears to be to me. I just got Dragons Dogma 2 last night, so after that, I may look into this one!
Oh dear, I feel old now... I played the original game, and for that time it was really something different. Things we now take for granted, where experienced in that game for the first time. A lot of games that came after this original evolved in a better way thanks to this game. I replayed the game again after the remake, and it was a huge improvement. Not that is was perfect, because you could still feel it was a AA game without the massive budget AAA normally get. However - I can perfectly live those little imperfections, because it was a fun game. Now this new game looks like it's miles ahead of that older game, without loosing the charm. It is definitely on my "to buy" list, and of course I am going to buy it on my preferred platform - GOG (I love to have DRM-Free off-line installers). I am sure I am in for a good time...
1999 Outcast was the most innovative and beautiful open world ever made, with a sublime orchestral soundtrack from Lennie Moore (Star Wars: The Old Republic)
I truly loved this game. Some of the parkour trials are waaay too many, but you don't need to do them all. Aside from that , I thoroughly enjoyed it. I hope to see another sequel.
To be fair a cpl months back Rogue Trader videos were going around. I had no idea it even existed. I bought it after seeing afew sponsored videos and it was amazing imo. Great game. Actually made me more open minded to sponsored game videos.
I’m torn with how we review open world games now because think of what we want we don’t want bloat, but we will quickly say we don’t want a world that feels empty. That would mean we want every event that is put into this world that’s not empty so it will take a lot of events. We want them all or most of them to be handcrafted. That blows up budgets. That makes what we want and what we know is affordable at odds with each other.
I love the aspect of lack of handholding. Tne biggest ooof in original game was "where you save game" in training zone, and i totaly skipped that leader of rebelion had given you a gamsaav crystal, derp. What is point of game if everything is served on platter.. glossary is nice help. Played remake, missing that voxel feeling 😂 at max of 640x480 resolution.
I saw this game on Steam and wishlisted it. After the debacle with Star Wars Outlaws I'm gonna pick this one up to support the devs who are still making non-predatory single player experiences.
Oh crap i had no idea about this!! Ive started fhe original outcast multiple times over the years but never been able to finish if, but it always intrigued me. I'll definetly pick this up!
Im actually in the middle of playing this game right now, AND it's AWESOME!!! It's unbelievably awesome, as a matter of fact. It's everything that someone who loves a single-player open world would want in a single-player open world game. There is a lot, and I mean A LOT of voiced dialog and lore dumps in the game. The 360ness and 80/90s action hero aspect of the game is a huge plus for me. Other than that, this video covers everything that you would want to know about the game. I love this game... It's exactly what I needed. It's not Mass Effect 4, but it's the next best thing. If you love the Mass Effect games, then you will definitely enjoy this. Have fun!
I've got over 6,000 hours in my backlog, so competition is fierce. The game looks good enough, but just not enough to take the place of something like Eiyuden Chronicle.
I really wanna play this game. Didn't by it yet because here in Brazil gameskeep getting more and more expensive so I usually wait for discounts and sales. Looks like it has a cool universe and the design of the creatures really got my attention.
Me and my dad used to have the original one back on Windows 98 and it was kind of fun we both really enjoyed it it was really big at the time but I be both tried playing the demo on PS5 and it was the frame rate was so low the world exploration just didn't seem to jump out and excite I barely had an hour and I got extremely bored I think it's time has mostly passed but at least some people are enjoying it
I really want this game but here on Brazil the price is absurd. Waiting a price drop to pick! I loved the first one back then, and the game is in my top 10 lists everytime
I love THQ Nordic. They've saved some of my favorite franchises. I always do my part to support them. Sometimes I just want a jank game with some new stuff and charm. I'm going to have to pick this up now.
Outcast 1 is my all-time favorite game ever. It felt like stepping inside the Star Wars Special Editions. Absolute phenomenal game at the time. And now we have a worthy sequel, although not the absolute bestest of best games ever anymore ;) The freedom, general atmosphere, writing and world-building are still top notch though.
Thank you for sharing this game with us. I love THQ and how they resurrect old IPs they don’t get enough credit I’m gonna try this game out tonight. Hoping for kingdoms of amular 2
The original was terrific, Matty. And I urge everyone to give it a shot. I believe it’s available on ps plus. Definitely going to buy this when I have the time to play it.
It plays like I hope the upcoming star wars game will, I really enjoyed the demo and the demo is available on Ps5 and Xbox too! I strongly recommend people give it a try.
Space gaming channels I follow have talked about Outcast - A New Beginning. I've seen Lets Plays. But we all know from the Starfield experience that you don't go to Bethesda and its content creators looking for space or Sci-Fi. Fallout's about as close as you get.
The original game had a similar plot and came out way before Avatar, if anything the biggest inspiration for Outcast was Stargate. I've almost finished A New Beginning and it's okay but imho the first game is better. I really have to praise the new game on a technical level though, the world looks stunning. The foliage density, ground clutter, biome variety etc, in a pretty much seamless open world (load screens only happen when using the not stargates) is wild for a modern AA title. It's just a shame that instead of staying true to the original they went the Ubisoft route with collectible/activity/outpost bloat, that coupled with extremely boring main robot enemies really does the IP a disservice.
The quality of this remake\sequel is impressive. I remember playing this game as a kid in the 90s and this game blew my mind at the time. I really don't think there was anything like it at the time either. It may have even been one of first truly open world 3D games. It's a little too pricey for me at the current time but I do have it wish listed. Just way too many other games taking the mind share up presently. I wouldn't be surprised if this game doesn't sell well as I really haven't seen any other advertisements on it besides the rare sponsor spots on videos that I watch. Which is a shame but there is a lot of competition in the open world genre right now. Hopefully it does well enough to get a sequel or at least let the dev team keep operating. Solid and fair review Matty. Cheers!
So two questions. 1: Do enemies respawn now? The original game had a set population of enemies and once you killed an enemy soldier or a group of enemy soldiers they were gone for good. 2: Are the questlines that weaken your enemies still preset? In the original as you gained support of the population of the games regions the remaining non-boss enemy soldiers would start suffering permanent debuffs like inflicting less damage or reduced health, based on what type of resources the regions supporting you had provided to the enemy army.

Congratulations on shitting yourself

That isn’t a guilty pleasure it’s a great game lol
I heard elex got the inspiration from this game. I'm going to purchase this game
I hate that no one is talking about it out of their own desire, rather than it being a sponsor. Lots of these vids.
Money talks
Blame the marketing

I probably would have grabbed this for $35-$40. $60 is a bit much right now. Ill wait for a sale and better optimization
It's on sale right now at Gamestop for only $27
Looks good only thing stopping me is the price. I don’t even spend $70 on fresh AAA releases.

Funnily enough the ad before the video was for this game

Matty says he "won't spoil much" then proceeds to tell the game's major plot twist

Rebirth took me 150 hrs to 100% Great fun, but thanks for this shorter recommendation. I personally loved the combat in andromeda.
I enjoyed it a lot for what it was. Interesting quest structure, just wish the aliens weren't so ugly and the protagonist so bland lol
They probably feel the same about humans.

Bruce Campbell should play the hero. Outcast is so underrated.
