To get rid of the jaggies easier just go to the stroke tool box and click the rounded join button. It will round all the corners at once. Saved me so much time when stroking fonts that make tons of jaggies.

I've been already doing most of this when Illustrating in Illustrator but the one with the brush is a time saver. I usually use the stroke thickness tool and that's very time consuming.

I've not used CC before, but in older versions, you could add a thick stroke around an illustration by selecting all the shapes > grouping them > add a stroke > moving the stroke beneath "contents" in the Appearances box and this would create an outline that would conform to any edits you do to the illustration, no separate object needed. Just double click the group and edit it in isolation mode.

I found these tips useful. These tips are very useful.
When I am tracing a picture, I use the stroke color and not use a fill color till I am done outlining with the pen tool, This way I can see the picture I am outlining. I have bookmarked this tutorial and go back to it again. Cute graphics. I did an outline of Rudolph for my Christmas clipart collection.

Hey man, love your style & your videos! I have a tip that I think is faster for outlining an illustration. If you duplicate your art (like you did), then select the duplicate art & hit Object>Expand. Then go into Pathfinder and hit Unite to merge it all into one shape. Now go to Object > Path > Offset Path and a window will pop up to allow you to create a keyline around your object, but it's not a stroke it's a fill. You can then isolate that new shape & put it behind your object and you have a perfect keyline around your art. I use this on logos all the time, as I never keep strokes in my finished AI artwork because if you scale the art up or down, the stroke won't scale & then your art looks wacky. Anyways, just my method for doing the same thing you have here. :)

In 2021 you can right-click and select simplify, I generally select smooth as default for my strokes - great little 'show me how' thanks although my method is quite different - I actually purchased my XP-Pen 22E because of you and I'm loving it, so thanks for that too

Hi Brad, nice video as always. I have a question in mind, I know that if we're about to make an illustration for web, better use photoshop. But I'm more used to illustrator now. Does it affect a lot if we make in illustrator for web or say Instagram posts? What program are you using most now?

Wonderful work Brad! Would the Width Tool (shift W) be a better solution to add the variable width strokes? It's a bit faster and you get to keep the editability of the strokes. Great video!

To comment on #3, when I had all my shapes for my character in a vector layer in Affinity Designer, all my smaller inner lines stayed the same when I used the outline effect(kind of my character a style similar to The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy).

Hello Brad, I've been doing some drawing with Adobe draw on Ipad, then going back to Adobe Illustrator I notice it's full of anchor point. I mean full full... So I was wondering if you know any alternative or keyboard shortcut to the "Simplify" action that's deep into the Object menu ? have a nice day.

You're an awesome designer and I love your videos, Brad but I noticed there were multiple things in this video you were doing that have easier less time consuming ways of achieving. This would have been an awesome video to teach some workflow along with the techniques. Nonetheless, it wasa great video nonetheless
