I also use riddles stuff and thinking of switching to McKenzie's stuff also thinking of using Pro1's stuff. Do you think the McKenzie stuff is better it seems to be all the same as far as the way you mix per gallon or whatever

    HELP !
Can anyone tell me what the problem is and how to fix it.
I use citric acid bath, 3oz citric acid per gal.
    1lb salt per gal.
    pH is at 2.
On day two of the deer hide being in this solution the flesh side starts turning brown ruining the hide.
Can anyone please tell me what the problem is.
    Thank You

You see ... that's not tanning. This is pickling. You have to tan the skin in a tanning solution after you pickle it. A pickled hide, is NOT a tanned hide. When you oil a pickled hide, you have a pickled hide that has been oiled ... still not a tanned hide.

I had a hide in a pickle for way over 3 years and it tanned fine. No issues and it killed all the bugs and bacteria

I'm not getting into taxidermy, I've just got one bobcat I caught that I'm going to experiment with and try to make a rug to hang on my wall, can I use alum and salt for the pickle so I don't have to buy the Mckenzie safety acid? Thanks for any advice.

I think a lot of starters Make their pickle really lite and throw a oversized cap in that’s soaking wet with regular tap water and the ph shoots up

For ur pickle just add alum to your mix that will stiffen all the goo up nice for a final flesh and as for the ph waste of time it's not an issue

1 question. You say you can keep a deer hide in pickle for 3-6 months but the instructions on the bottle says 8hrs...
Are you supposed to let the hide dry some before adding tanning solution or rite after pickle?

Also I heard you say you oiled before you put it onto the mount? I've heard to do that and some say skip it ? Oiling will help it stretch but just curious
