A lightbox is a fun little project. It is great for Arts and crafts and particulary for tracing. The surface gives off a bright light so you can place a paper on it and trace it.
This is a tutorial showing you how to make a cheap and easy Lightbox for artwork, photography and tracing. It uses LED’s for a bright and even lighting. Fun little project and you just need a few basic supplies.
I show you step by step how to make it. And I have a web tutorial with links to the exact LED’s and power supply that I use.
The web tutorial is on my site here:

will my guy! you forgot to include the template!
He made an inexpensive and practical way to build a light box that costs anywhere from 45 - 300 dollars and people had the nerve to dislike the video. I question this sometimes! well anyway. Good job! Thanks!
Thanks :)
I made mine, I tweaked it a bit, I used a picture frame & instead of using the LED strips I used some little LED flashlights I had hanging around (no wiring) I won't be using the lightbox for extended hours so it works perfectly, I just turn them off when I'm done. thanks for the project.
Thank you! I've wanted a light box for forever but they're so expensive and I'm not great at building things but this I can do! :)
kat s You are very welcome! Neat little lightbox :)
epicfantasy I'm a little ashamed that this might be the first one of your projects that I might actually do xD
Backon Lazer Quite ok! You go for it and have fun!
epicfantasy I'll go looking for materials as soon as I find the time for it =)
epicfantasy I dont have everything that the lightbox needs so can you tell me something I can use instead?
I literally gasped when I saw you did this tutorial! Thank you!
edstella You are very welcome. Thanks for watching!
Hands down, best and most feasible DIY light box solution I've seen. Finally, I can justify the relative (in)expense and have a tool for paper piecing my quilt blocks! Thanks for the fun and straightforward tute -- I'm off to make my own!
By the amazement of TALOS!!! Praiseeeeeeeee TALOS! A box that contains the sun is now bestowed upon us mere meager mortals!
I logged into UA-cam just to like your comment. 👏🏻
Simple and cheap! Love this! Thank you so much.
I love it. I've wanted one for years.

Thank you!!! very quick, simple, and cost efficient. No need for thousands of dollars of equipment like in other tutorials.
lightboxes are awesome, I use mine all the time
Never even knew you could get LED strips. Need a light box for stained glass work, what a great video! Easy to assemble. Thanks.
+Hopeful Magic Good luck with the project. Keep me updated on your stained glass work. I am going to be doing some.
Okay dude THANK YOU SO MUCH! I wanna do traditional animation but I didn't want to pay a whole bunch for a regular light box, so once again THANKS!
This is brilliant! Thank you for sharing!
WOOT! Nice going to make one to trace my other drawings I did in the past and paint them with different colors. Thanks for the upload!
You're wonderful! Thanks for giving your gift to the world.
Best tutorial I've seen on this subject thus far. Thanks!
Fantastic Idea for a cheap light box, love it (and thank you!) I'm in need of a light box for occasional use and this is perfect.
Thank you so much for these easy to understand instructions and good filming of the process. When it comes to DIY videos, many are called but few are chosen. You are clearly one of the best. Thanks again.
You are very welcome. Thanks for watching and thanks for your kind words.
Thank you very much. I just built one for my wife and she loved it. I posted my pics on my Facebook and gave you your props. It was fun and only bunt off a couple of finger prints with the hot glue. HA
Oh. My. Gosh! I dont have to waste like $50.00 buying one!!!!!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU! totally subscribing!
Thank you! Fantastic abbreviation!
Bro, your channel is actually lit af. I wanna say that’s real inspiration for someone alittle older (no offense) it’s just amazing someone with so much experience showing the new generation how to do stuff
wonderful!!!
Art ala Carte ayyy one of ur fans
My daughter and I made one this afternoon. I did think it would go faster, but it took about 3 hours to get it all done and ready to go. That said, the lighting piece was by FAR the easiest thing we did - cutting all that foam board was tedious. Once I changed the blade on my Xacto knife, though, things went much smoother. :)
Thanks for posting - it was a great project and I'm excited to see what she does with it!
Love your energy, great project. Have always wanted a lightbox and this looks easy to make. Thanks for a super video.
I can't wait to make one! thank you!
So excited to make this for my pre school class!
Super helpful! Thank you!
Thanks for the tutorial! I need it for school work and this is so helpful!!!
It'll look even better once I mount the rope lights to the base it's going to be perfect thank you I'm going to make a lot of money with this
Thanks for the great tutorial. This box is very useful as a Xray view box.
Amazing! I have been wanting one of these for a very long time ,for quilting.Don't see myself wanting to pay the large price they ask for .Thanks a lot
awesome, just looking on line for store bought at crazy prices so off to make this now. thanks heaps for sharing and caring
Amazing ..been searching for one that's easy to make ..thanks a million ..

This is awesome! Thank you!!!
Claire Bear Thanks for watching!
Extremely well done video. Great explanations. A project I've wanted to do. Many thanks.
Absolutely. The links to the supplies are great. I wish more posters would utilize the description section as well.
Thank you very much for making this video. I REALLY REALLY needed a light box and i hate spending money. I really appreciate you making these videos every week.
weirder321 Thanks for watching and have fun making a light box!
Wow! Thanks for sharing 👍👍

Thankyou for this video! I bought a Mac Tonight McDonald's panel at a yard sale about 10 years ago and have always wanted to make a light box for it but had no idea where to begin. I'll probably use wood so I can hang it. Now I have an idea of how to proceed
Thanks!
Thanks for the making this video. I just made my own light box and used your tip on the foam board for light diffusion it worked out great!
+Dan The Maker Man You are very welcome. Grats on the light box and thanks for watching my video.
Very helpful! Thanks! I will make a light box ! :)
really useful tutorial , now I can make one for myself . subscribed haha :D
Are you an animator
I just got the how to draw comics book and they said use a light table. I thought I just do it for fun I'm not buying a few thousand dollar table. Now I can make this and add perspective to my doodles thanks. Looking forward to the paper making. I tried to get my neices into this but they just like to draw and the art projects seemed to bore them. I liked it and had a blast making the diorama. Thanks for the uploads.
Therealhatepotion Thanks for watching! If you make this be sure to send me a pic!
thanks your a life saver :)
Thanks sooooo much man! Wanted to make one of these for ages for a friend but couldnt figure out how to do the lighting! I'm going to use wood instead of foamboard though :) cant thank you enough!!
This was super helpful. I'm doing an algebra one "linescapes" project and your supposed to make a drawing that represents you and if you get an award for one of the categories your grade gets boosted up. So I said hey i can shade decently so my objective is to go for the realistic award but i don't have a light box but this video basically saved me. Thank you so much for this affordable tutorial.
you are a genius!
Nice!
I used ur ideas except for the box I just used an old wooden draw from a bedside draw and drilled a whole in the side for the power cord thanks..
this is an amazing project, thank you for doing this! im going to try my hand at this :)
this is awesome just went to a craft store with a store wide liquidation and a light box still cost about $120 thanks so much for this tutorial!
cameron Smith You are very welcome! Have fun making it!
wow! this is brilliant, youve saved me allot of money
I want to make my own UV light box for exposing silk screens etc. I can also use them with polymer clay, resin etc. for certain projects. This video should come in handy when I go to do that.

Thanks epicfantasy for this video, it is going to help a ton with my halo tac-pad!
thank for sharing idea.
I watched this video at 8:00am it inspired me cuz now I'm just getting in to tattoos again and I've been using Tupperware drawer with a flashlight under it so I got the rope lights for $10 from home Depot with the plug included and I got the two sheets of plexiglass they were $12 and luckily I had some white plexiglass at the house and all that woods scrap so yeah pretty much a $20 light box that will last forever thank you I already subscribed and liked
So nice!!!"
Im actually gonna make this for filming it seems bright enough
I love your channel. I have been subscribed for years.
awesome! I've always wanted to have a light box for animating in pencil, but ones on line are always so pricy! thanks for showing me an inexpensive way to make one of my own!
Just watched your video light box nice & easy to do especially if you only got one hand to use (stroke put pay to right hand side) keep up the good work
Fantastic! I've always wanted one, but like everyone else says, they're so expensive. Heading to Hobby Lobby for materials. :) Thank you very much. I'm subscribed now.
Are you making a railroad spike knife? Sweet!, can't wait.
I sure am! Coming up, but not the next video.
Sweet!, you've always been talented at blacksmithing, I also can't wait for the medieval billhook video that your making.
hey man.. i love you! thanks for this video!
Hi!! Mr. Castle Master!
Foam board ! Fun Project!
Las week I have made one for my wife. But I used Masonite (acrylic and LED strips), not bad, but I had to have it cut in my hardware store.
Foam board is easily cut with just an Xacto knife...
I shall try foam board for my own!!
Thanks!
I want to use 9.6W led strip, will it be enough power? I would photograph old negative film with my dslr.
Thanks ❤️
I always wanted one of these. When I was younger I uses to hod the pic I traced up to a window when the sun was out, but it was realy tiering for the arms.
imma try this but make it thinner :D thank you for this vid
Thankyou so much
This is now one of my favorite channels on UA-cam. I am now Subcribed!
Thanks :)
this video is wholesome
After about 1:50 the narration starts sounding like Peter Griffin lol.
I still have the one my legendary animation professor (R.I.P. Vincent Potuto) made. That thing is a rustic beauty.
thank you so much really
AWesome!
Cool
I would love it if u would do a tutorial on a steampunk hand ax : )
great vid
Nice bro
That's a great idea. My wife goes through printers like candy so I'm going to take the next one she throws out and turn it into a light box. Great video.
Dean O Pretty creative idea!
you can spray the acrylic sheets with a thin layer of white spray paint to work as a diffuser
Awesome! Cheap and quick way to make something they charge $100+ in the store for :D
good job
Can you do a tutorial on how to make a softbox (used in photography)
Hey thanks for the tutorial, man! I've been drawing for a few years, but I've never had one of these before. I anticipate it'll greatly improve the quality of my drawings. In my personal experience of having a go at making this, though, I found that a little bit of strong tape at the corners and edges of the box in addition to the glue REALLY helps hold it together even better. Makes it look a little less professional, but hey, I'm showing off my art, not the box, eh?
Huh! was thinking of making myself a new desk. Might make something like this as the working surface (with a bit better diffuser material)
Wow, what a creative idea!
indeed. just came to me as I was watching this. I'm a drafter, by education, so anything that would be useful for old school t-square on paper is something I'd consider. Foamboard, as handy as it is, isn't quuuuite up to the challenge of holding drafting equipment. Most drafting tools like triangles are clear, and the light would shine through them, as well, which would make lining up circle templates and the like quite easy.
If you could make another tutorial to make it leaning forward that would be greaat :) it's just more easier to draw, but thanks for this!
thank you very much, my good man!!! I saved some money and even more time thanks you. :) Thanks you ! :)
You are very welcome. Grats on your light box and thanks for watching my video!
Love the video! It will be a big help, thanks! Just got a new sub : )
Man you're awesome,in the next video will you make Legolas's bow working??? Thumbs up to be seen by epicfantasy
biiiiiig helpppp. gonna do this later because i need this for my schoolwooooorks
Thank you for sharing, I'm sat here think what do u have around the house that wud work I have a box I will put some polystyrene in and around to make the lip, as some lady said i m going to use a picture frame and I have lots of led Xmas lights somewhere, so that's my Friday sorted. Thanks again.
Another quick way : pick a white image off google apply it on full screen o your laptop/ big tablet and turn your laptop so you can actually draw and put your papers and start tracing!
That's very clever! I thought I would have to use wood, but this seems quite strong. One thing, if you like your fingers, please always cut away from you. thanks
I like this! I've always wanted one. I think if I were to make this I would make the box where is more angled to face you. If that makes any sense.
Wow, this is a really good suggestion. Good idea.
