The purpose of the lockout relay is to keep the compressor off when there is a significant fault, EVEN if the fault condition goes back to normal. For example, if a high-pressure switch opens, the lockout relay can keep the system off, even once that switch closes again.
Quite simply, a lockout relay is an old-school way to keep a compressor or other critical component “locked out” so that it doesn't ruin itself by slamming on and off when safeties open and close.
When the relay and safety contacts are closed, the path of least resistance is through the safeties and the contactor coil, so the current takes that low resistance path. When any safety switches open, the current is then FORCED to go through the lockout relay coil because it is the path of least resistance. That then causes the lockout contacts to go open, keeping the contactor coil locked out.

It is a high resistance contact....thats why when one trips....you will see voltage at the compressor contactor, but not enough voltage to close the contactor. Hugh resistance = lower voltage. Simple but effective device....see them on a lot of Trane water source heat pumps
Very nice tutorial 👌 for HVAC technician thanks you sir from Philippines 🇵🇭
Awesome vid sir! More vids on these types of things help us new guys out a lot! We have some fundamentals down but seeing them applied is extremely beneficial on these relays and parts.
Thank for taking time out to explain this. Keep up the great content. I’ll keep watching and liking your videos
Hello there, we have problems with Voltage fluctuations, where the voltage dips briefly and then comes back on right away. This causes my AC compressor many problems, so I installed a ICM Delay on Make Timer. The strange thing is that the timer does not cut out at those dips but only delays once the electricity goes off completely ( same counts for the built in delay in my Air handler thermostat). So here my question : would a Ditek Surge Protector be a solution or do I need to install something else ? Thank you so much !
Can you please make a video on how an auxiliary contactor works and how is wired? Like for a walk in freezer. Thanks!
Thanks for the excellent explanation 👍 good staff __ appreciate
For my schematic show r and c reverse as ur wiring diagram If no 24v go into the relay. 1234 all are common wire , How the relay work ?
Another great tutorial. Bravo JMT. 👏
Thank you! Much appreciated 🙏 Stay tuned for new videos every week🔧⚡️
I thank you for sharing once again JPM……Excellent video
Sir please make video on lockout relay also
This is a video on a lockout relay. What exactly do you mean?
@@JumpermanTech i thought its time delay with lockout relay
Good
Thank you! Stay tuned for new videos every week🔧⚡️
Nicely explained, thank you.
Thank you very much very helpful
Nice job, well done👍
Thank you very much! Appreciate the feedback. Stay tuned for new videos every week🔧⚡️
Why are the 24 volt and common on the same side of the conactor coil?
Not sure if this is your question, but if that NC switch in the relay opens, then all the 24 volts is forced through the small coil in the relay and the light. Because that small coil in the relay is a small load it will consume most of the voltage (I think that’s correct), which means there won’t be much voltage left to operate the larger resistive load in the larger contactor coil. Not sure I said that correctly, so I hope someone with more expertise can fill in the gaps.
👍❄️🇺🇸💪 great vid. Is lockout relay mostly for AC/heating or have u seen them in refrigeration like walkin coolers ?
Yes,make a video!
Make a video on what exactly?
great video, surely this will not be able to work on a pump down refrigeration system which uses the LP switch to control?
Excellent explanation 👍from india
Thank you! I appreciate that🙏 Stay tuned for new videos every week🔧⚡️
Hello India from America👋
Dear sir appreciated u r channel
Can u make one video about cold storage control wiring please
Very good information for HVAC Control People 👍
Yes, please make a video of wiring it. Thanks!
Next time you run into one in the field go over it again thanks
Ur the reason i get off at 2:30 everyday😂
excellent demo & explanation ⭐️⭐️⭐️
👍
Thank you! 👍👍👍
Great video
