In all told i have mech restored over 20 alpines from 1961 thru 1969. i had a sunbeam arrow 1969 with the borgwarner t10 automatic , this car only had 6500 miles when i purchased it from original owner in 1986 to me this was the best driving car i ever owned.

Rootes always made good, high quality cars.

personally of all the sunbeams/ Rootes i have owned around 20 the only problem i have found keeping them of the roads was the Lucas electrical system. at least half of them repaired electrical system then drove them never paid more than 200.00 for them at that time 1978-1990. only reason i do not have one now was ran out of engine parts. i have not tried since then to get another one. all the ones i had i was in the navy at that time 1976-1994, other sailors would want one i had i would sell it to them for what i had into it or help them find another then help them to repair it. so as you said Rootes made a very good vehicle, out of all that i obtained only one went back to a junk yard, but it went with new brake job. 1960 Hillman minx convertible had body damage to right rear quarter with Bondo. on trying to remove Bondo hole side of vehicle fell off. VERY DISAPOINTING.

Thank you for this video. The Borg Warner automatic is indeed a very worthwhile transmission when driving in city cycle. I own a Hillman Gazelle [Australian assembly] which came out of the factory with a BW35 , a 1725cc motor and a progressive twin choke carburettor: a brilliant car in traffic, but the motor is a bit busy on long distance. I am now rebuilding a series I Hillman Minx Convertible also to be fitted with a 1725cc motor. I want to fit a BW35 for my wife to drive it. The motor will be fitted with a standard alpine Camshaft, with dual sidedraft Weber 40 DCOEs. The crunch point is the idle speed to engage gear without the "clonk" on the diff. Can you help me please? What is the recommended idle speed for an Alpine Series IV with a BW35 automatic gearbox?

If I were you I wouldn’t use twin Weber 40s, I’d use a twin choke 36/32 DGV on a curved inlet manifold like we have. This makes the kick down cable set-up simple. This carb set-up also gives a powerful, smooth and steady tick over at about 800rpm in Park, rises to about 950-1,000 in neutral. Alpine Innovations supply the carb set up and manifold as a complete kit.

Had one in 1986, never drove it as it had thrown rod engine. a friend of mine wanted it so i just gave it to him. do not know what he did with it as military was transferred.
