    Well done! It’s great to see the Rootes group Sunbeam Alpines get the recognition they deserve among British sports cars...👍

      Absolutely right, the most underrated of British sports cars when in reality it is the best of the lot.

      @@TheSunbeamAlpineChannel How much would it cost to replace the engine with batteries and go all-electric?

      It has been done before. If you search online there is a beautiful yellow one that has been very well converted. How much it would cost I don't know and the Alpine is a heavy car so how far you would actually get on a charge I'm not sure!

    I will never forget, as a child in the 1960's, Elizabeth Taylor driving a red/black one in "Butterfield 8" against Lawrence Harvey's Mercedes 300 sedan. I never saw one on the street here in Texas back then. I still like the fins!

    I had two back in the early seventies: one a 1959 reg no. YGH444 which cost £125 in 1972 and a 1962 682 RTA which I rescued from a scrap yard a year later. my series one had chrome headlamp cowls. Like all cars of that era, they rotted like a pear

      Most that are around now have either had a very sheltered life in a museum or display or (more likely) have been fully restored and rust proofed. They are a lovely useable, classic car and can be used daily all year round.

    Hi I had a friend that owned one back in the 70’s and I used to ride with him . About 5 years ago I came across a series 5 that was in a box . The body is in good shape but the motor was all apart . It’s taking me sometime but the motor is back together and now I’m working on getting it painted . This one has a hard top . I’ve got to find the back and side glass for the top . Haven’t had much luck. I live in the USA (Vermont)

    God I miss my series 2. She was my first car in 1982. Unfortunately it was a police magnet being red. I moved to a series 5 in British racing green. I never got a ticket in that one.

      There are plenty around, all the colours, all the Series. Why not get another? I bought my car in 1983 and it was the best buy I ever made. It first went round the clock in 1987!

    I had a Series 3 GT back in the 1980s, I should have kept it.
    The Harrington version may be better built, but I think they have spoiled the lines of the Alpine, which was a beautiful car.

    One non-amusing update on the last of the S5s was a gearbox mainshaft with more and finer splines as used on Hunters. A Hunter clutch driven plate was needed when replacement time came around. How I struggled to fit a better condition earlier box before I realised the difference! Rootes only changed the input shaft, the tailshaft had coarse splines , so it wasn't a complete Hunter box but a hybrid. Illogical or what? Did they only run out of coarse splined imput shafts ? Wierd.

    Thank you for this video, I do have the book but I never got the time to read it. Hopefully will do soon. I am an owner of S3 GT but somehow I have the S1 & 2 type bonnet badge. Could it be that they started with this type on early production cars ? Regards from sunny Malta 🇲🇹

    I HAVE 1 SUNBEAM ALPINE 1964 THE PROBLEM IS THE CHASIS NO SCRATCH NO CLEAR CAN I GET THE NEW PLATE ALUMINIUM ORIGINAL CHASIS NO IN UK

    • @TheSunbeamAlpineChannel
      @TheSunbeamAlpineChannel  2 роки тому +1

      Ali, The car will only ever have one original chassis plate with the digits pressed through so that they stand up from the plate but you can buy replica ones on EBay and stamp your number in if you have the correct paperwork. No matter how ‘scratched’ the plate is I would advise you to keep it as if you ever need to prove the car’s identity you will be able to produce what was fitted and this can be forensically checked by the police to prove the number is correct should it ever be needed.

    Excellent video. My opinion is: don't. I have a great condition 1960 S2 I've owned since 1985 and I've got infinitely more money into it than it's worth.

    • @TheSunbeamAlpineChannel
      @TheSunbeamAlpineChannel  2 роки тому +2

      Bradley, perhaps some things can't be measured in cost. We got our own Alpine in 1983 and it has been our only car at times. It has done duty as a daily commuter and has taken us all over Europe on various holidays. It has been fully restored twice in that time. It has cost way more than we would ever recoup if we were to sell it but it doesn't matter as it won't be being sold! The pleasure that this beautiful old car has given us over the years is simply priceless.
