The Sunbeam Alpine Channel
United Kingdom
Приєднався 18 січ 2014
The Sunbeam Alpine Channel is dedicated to the maintenance, restoration and preservation of the 'Series' Sunbeam Alpines built between 1959 and 1968. The channel features videos of how we have fixed problems with various Sunbeam Alpines that we own or have owned. Almost all of these tasks are carried out using only the most basic D.I.Y. tools. If the videos help you to fix your car then they have been worthwhile. We can send you various instructional guides to help do work on Alpines. If you need something please feel free to contact us at TIM_RAYMOND@sky.com The videos are free for you to use, all we ask is that you subscribe to the channel (it won't cost you anything) .
Remember you can watch this channel on most modern televisions. not just on computer.
On this channel we also feature other Alpine related channels that we have found useful.
We have also owned a few Norton motorcycles over the years and there are some videos of the rotaries on this site just for interest.

Sunbeam Alpine: Joan & Mick Wise "Me and My Alpine"
@thesunbeamalpinechannel is a channel for ALL Alpine owners, we love to hear from you and we love to show owners and their cars.
This video features the incredible story of two Alpine owners who attended the U.K. launch of the Alpine at Earls Court in 1959 where 17 year old Joan decided that she was going to have an Alpine and told her 18 year old boyfriend Mick that this was the only car for her. Now in their 80s and married for over 56 years they still drive their Alpine regularly. Unlike many owners they drive the Alpine all year round, regardless of the weather.... meanwhile the Morris Convertible that Mick bought brand new in 1965 is approaching ½ Million miles on the clock!
These two deserve their own TV show, they are great company and very entertaining, constantly laughing and joking and displaying a wonderful sense of humour.
The "Me and My Alpine" playlist features Alpine owners telling their stories of why they have an Alpine, when they got it and things that have done with it and to it. Every owner has a reason for owning an Alpine and a unique Alpine story to tell.
If YOU would like to feature on the channel and tell us all YOUR Alpine story just get in touch at TIM_RAYMOND@sky.com and we will tell you what to do.
It doesn't matter where in the World you live, how long you have had your Alpine, whether it is a concours example or an old banger YOU have a story and we would love to record it on this channel for posterity and let other Alpine enthusiasts hear it.

Great review of the Alpine series. I wish I still had my series two. May be I'll Get another one when I sell my Lancia's. All the best Bob
Thanks Bob, as you already know the Alpines are marvellous cars. Definitely worth getting another one….
Nice car great condition. ❤
Yes it is a beauty.
I had an auto Alpine in the 80s, Dark blue, light blue inside.Loved it, Had it 9 years
They are a lovely car to drive, perfect in a city. Very under rated.
The tigers not represented at the show very disappointing
It doesn’t work like that. Cars are invited to appear and the organisers generally pick special and rare cars or those owned by celebrities. Having a Sunbeam of any sort there was highly unusual and an honour for the marque. Andrew Yates’s car was invited because it is such a high quality restoration of an extremely rare car.
440k miles, 1 owner on the Morris. Fantastic.
I love the fact that these two are out in one of their classics all year round. Proper owners.
What a lovely story, and whilst I own a 'common MG' as they say in the vid haha, I've always liked the Alpine, fine looking cars. Greetings from OZ.
It is a pretty unique story, that is for sure!
What a great story and I had the pleasure of meeting you two at the Kent National last summer. We were in our red Alpine behind you on the run to Biggin Hill for the Spitfire Museum outing on the Sunday. I almost ran into the back of you on that hill where your clutch started slipping. I thought at the time you were trying to avoid changing down into second gear !!!. Strange similarity. We both own a red Alpine and a Smoke Grey Morris Minor. Ours is a Traveller, not a tourer but both sought after variants. I also have to drive across the lawn to get into my garage workshop. Hope to see you at a future National. Lovely couple.
Proper Alpine owners, ignore the weather, drive the car!
What a pleasant couple. Good story too, having seen it on the show floor and then waiting so long to get one.
Yes they are truly lovely and it is so good to see people their age using these old cars as they were meant to be used. Mick's 'owned from new' Morris with almost ½ million miles on it is incredible.
Lovely couple. Hope to meet one day
Lovely Joan and Mick. Much loved members of SAOC Kent branch.
Great story Allan - I remember the two Johns very well. John (and Barbara) Timms at Barton Stacey Garage (Contract Paint Co) restored my 1967 Series V GT in 1991 and did a refresh around 2000. John Hayter (Berkshire Sunbeam Alpine Centre) maintained it at Hermitage Garage though the 90's before Neil Chandler took over and John moved to Hungerford.
They certainly were great days.
Nice lots of good info.. Nice to to see something coming of all that historical work RnD...😊
Kieran if the history interests you watch the other video that is all about the history of the Club Weber Carb set up. ua-cam.com/video/yRMAlu7RIvk/v-deo.htmlsi=tUukYNhg_XeUZWKF
An amusing aside ........ the last few hundred Alpines with the non-peaked headlamp rings and pentastars had a Frankenstein gearbox with fine spline input shafts like Hunter boxes and coarse spline output shafts like all other Alpines. You will need a Hunter pattern clutch driven plate or you will struggle for ever to refit the gearbox. I did! Doh!
John, hopefully you got it sorted in the end!
Great story! Thanks Tim and Allan.
Glad you enjoyed it. We want as many Alpine owners as possible to tell their stories on this channel.
I have 2 alpines and I’m too old to finish. One has a brand new engine help me sell them.
Brent my advice would be to contact the Sunbeam Alpine Owner’s Club.
I have 2 alpines
Lovely cars.
Fitted this kit to my Commer pb (alloy head 1735cc) loving it!
Alpine Innovations have breathed new life into the old Rootes engines with this manifold and carb set up. We have it on two of our Alpines and it has revolutionised them. You will find that the mpg improves so much that the kit actually pays for itself remarkably quickly.
Kristian you are right. The damage to the wheels is so extreme you can see the obvious danger. I wonder how many owners are driving around in blissful ignorance with similar nuts. The reason Glenn’s failed is because of the extreme pressure of racing. I suspect that anyone else would also have the nuts fail, it will just take longer.
interesting about the wheeel nuts. I have a lot of wheel nuts and it's a mixture of Hunter and the older ones. I did assume they where the same. The wheel nut contact area on older and newer audax rims area also different. I got some 6 inch Ford (Capri?) rims. The thing with them is the holes are not completely round. I guess it is the Ford sloppy manufactuering.
I used to have a mate who made steel wheels for Ford cars at Dagenham back in the day. I’ll tell him his work was not good enough!
Love your presentation style.
Glad you enjoyed the video.
Great video Glenn, very interesting facts and photos. I think Rootes had a lot more success with the Alpines in rallying than most people realise. Certainly they realised the Tiger had better prospects with rallying than racing after the Le Mans debacle with the Lister Tigers. Didn't Rosemary Smith have some success racing or rallying Alpines? I seem to recall that after reading her autobiography "Driven " Your audio feed ( voice ) was way too quiet but the clips with the car were fine. Your car sounds magnificent, very strong when pulling hard. In fact the clip showing 3002 RW pulling out of the pit lane at Le Mans sounded exactly the same. I think hill climbs or sprints would interest most people as the thought of muscling it out with other racers might be a bit intimidating. Having the circuit to yourself sounds good. Only your tomfoolery can get you into trouble and bend your pride and joy. As regards your wheel woes, you live right on top of MWS in Langley. Why not pay them a visit and maybe invest in a set of wire wheels there. There is only one nut to hold the thing on and they self tighten. MWS sell bolt on wire wheel hubs for the Alpine, so no need to start swapping hubs like people used to. Plus, they would look really great on your car. A lot of those racers used wire wheels for the reasons you discovered. Any movement of the wheel will loosen the nuts and the cornering stresses of racing put tremendous stress on the wheel, tyre and suspension. The state your stripped wheels got into was horrific. Maybe a good set of mini lites might be legal too. They usually come with dedicated nuts to ensure proper seating. Good luck with future forays. It does look the most fun you can have with clothes on, but way more expensive.
It certainly does look like fun!
I’m hoping to fabricate something similar that would go right onto the roll bar. Anyone done that??
Shannon, I haven’t seen that but making use of a roll bar makes sense.
I have 2 sunbeams. One brand new engine, never been started. One sunbeam is really nice , metal work is done , lots of work done one one. Where can I advertise to sell both cars??
There are lots of options from physical auctions and auction sites to adverts on Facebook but expect people to be suspicious and to want to only deal in person or through a site where any money transferred is protected.
Just wondering what the MOT man said about you not having a rear number plate ? at 12.50 😍
Eddie you don’t need one when the car isn’t registered in the U.K. (Alpi had been exported and was registered in Southern Ireland). You can’t (or at least at that time couldn’t) get a U.K. registration without an MOT so the car had to be trailered TO the MOT station BUT if it passed you were then allowed to drive from the MOT station back to your home! Getting an unregistered, no number plate car insured so we could do that drive was also fun but we did it! The rules seem crazy but it was what DVLA advised us. Once she had passed the MOT they gave Alpi her original number plate back and we could tax her. The drive with no number plate on was the first drive we had had in Alpi for 24 years! It was wonderful.
@@TheSunbeamAlpineChannel Wowza that seems crazy, but totally DVLA. Well done for circumnavigating that idiotic bureaucracy. its a chicken or egg conundrum.
Magnus Walker does OPP. Other Peoples Porsches. I suppose this is MAMA? Well done Tim. 😬😂
Sounds about right. You need to tell YOUR story because we all want to hear it!
You have done a light restored on your Alpine but have you fixed the notorious head gasket problem that plagues these 1725 cc Rootes Group engines well Toyota fixed the problem because my 1997 Toyota Hilux with 439000 kilometres hasn't blown a head gasket because the 22R engine is over engineered
I’m not sure it was a ‘light’ restoration!!!! The head gaskets only blow if people put tap water into the cooling system. When you put the minerals in tap water together with iron, copper and aluminium you cause the aluminium water channels to erode and the gasket blows. If you use distilled water and bluecol antifreeze (as Rootes recommended) there are no head gasket issues. Your Toyota has certainly done a lot of miles.
@@TheSunbeamAlpineChannel ln an engine if it is well engineered you should be able to put tap water in them why should you have to put distilled water into your cooling system l use tap water in my Toyota Hilux no problem obviously the 1725 alloy head Rootes Group engine wasn't very well engineered that's why there aren't many of them around and they finished selling Hillmans in Australia in the 1970s and l do see 30 year old Toyota's still driving around as daily drivers and in the 2000s l didn't see any Hillman Hunters driving around and l was a courier for 35 years and only saw one Hillman Hunter and l started in the mid 1980s and l should have seen at least couple of them only one and a couple of years ago on Christmas day l saw one 1966 Hillman Minx broken down on the side of an expressway but it was gone on Boxing Day my elder brother likes Rootes Group cars he has two of them both have not run in years and they have major engine problems and his daily driver that is running well is a 1976 Toyota yes Toyota Corolla and the Japanese cars especially in Australia most people bought them because they were so much more reliable than the British vehicles and Australia has absolutely embraced the Japanese cars and especially Toyota were Toyota's are the biggest selling brand in Australia for the last 25 years and the only other brand that will take over is Mazda as for European and British vehicles don't get a look in
@@lesklower7281 The Japanese destroyed the British Motorcycle industry too! You have to use distilled water in an Alpine engine because it has an iron block, copper gasket and aluminium head. If you use tap water (sometimes) the minerals dissolved in the water can act as a catalyst and cause the aluminium water chambers to erode. The head gasket then blows. Always distilled water.
I would like to know what puller you are using ?
Nice! As a new Alpine owner, I hope to make many memories in mine.
I’m sure that you will. You may be a new Alpine owner but you will still have a unique story. Why not tell it on the channel? What made YOU choose an Alpine rather than an MG or some other 1960s car? What have you done to it? What are you going to do with it? What condition is it in? People will be interested.
The factory GT removable hardtop model couldn't have soft tops fitted without additional parts and some metal surgery
You can always fit a removable soft top to a GT. This video shows how. ua-cam.com/video/M6DXJMEt2UY/v-deo.htmlsi=PXvgGTUmkEdheHZu
That's a fantastic story and I congratulate you on your search and never giving up to find the Alpine. All the best Bob

Your story really is a story. I Started filming my story today, I’m looking forward to adding it to this (and my 'Know Expert' channel ) although my story is more of a what I’ve done since I bought it video….. but hey I suppose all our 'stories are going to be different! I really hope others in the SAOC club are encouraged to make their own videos after seeing this. Thanks Tim.
Alan, I am really glad that you enjoyed the story. Lots of different ones will build up on here over time and will be available for people to watch for as long as we have the internet. I am looking forward to watching your video story.
Great story. I had two Alpines in 1972: a white series one and a red series two. That was in the days before old cars became classis, so parts for Alpines, other a few engine items, were vitually unobtainable. Sadly they both made the journey to the great parking lot in the sky, Checking the red one with DVLA, 683 RTA plate was used eleswhere until 1980, while the white one, YGH 444, has no record of it. Strange how car reg. numbers stay in my mind. I can remember my TR6 FRP 242L, Humber Sceptre 84 GOR, Granada 2.8i Ghia, EGF 11T and lots more but I can`t remember where I put a pen two minutes ago.
I know what you mean! Number plates get fixed in your memory for some reason don't they. I'm glad that you enjoyed the video. There are some great 'Me and My Alpine' stories coming up. Everyone has a reason for owning an Alpine and a story to how they ended up with one of these lovely old cars.

Thank you for your kind words. Keep an eye out for some of the other 'Me and My Alpine' stories coming up. There are some really good tales being told by people who have been enchanted by a Sunbeam Alpine. These cars have a real effect on people, it is surprising how many owners have had their cars for 30, 40 or 50+ years. There are not that many cars that have so much impact on people.
What a story top stuff ... Love the channel helps me loads restoring mine..

Thank you so much for your reply. We will heed your advise. Thank you also and your friends for the enthusiasm you all share for the little cars. Steve and Katherine
They are the best of the 1960s classic cars. You have a local branch of owners that meet every second Sunday or if you fancy a run out you would always be welcome at our Kent meet on the third Tuesday.
Wonderful. Thank you for brightening up our day. We have just bought a S. V . can you Advise where we can buy one of those overnight half covers please? Happy motoring Steve and Katherine. Mitcham
Congratulations on your purchase. Make sure that you join the owners club and register for Distress Line. It is a great service that means if you ever have a problem you will almost certainly get some help from fellow members to get you back on your way. We bought our cover from classic additions. It is the smallest car cap they do and fits Alpi well. I wish we’d had it before the rain in Shropshire! Sales@classicadditions.co.uk
Hi! Do you happen to know where the small metal reinforcing plates for the rivets can be purchased?
We bought ours from a ship’s chandler because they are used a lot on boats. Try searching for companies that specialise in fasteners. Somewhere like Spalding Fasteners may have them.

Hi, there are regularly different groups of members going off for a wide variety of adventures all over the U.K. and abroad. I’m not sure where you are based but why not get together with some friends from your local owner’s club branch or put an advert in the Horn and see who is near to you and /or who fancies doing something like this with you. In the interest of safety & being seen, I added a dual-element receptacle to my front turn signals, so now the large yellow turn signal would also be a parking / running light, then used a bright LED bulb. I did the same on the rear adding a dual-element receptacle to the top turn signal, so that now I have four running lights instead of the just two lower originals, & again used bright LED bulbs. In the world of people, driving while looking at there phones, maybe a little extra lighting will help us to be seen! I've owned my MK-2 Tiger for more than 50 years, & in the last 10 years, I have run 27K miles on the old girl!
Sounds like sensible modifications for today’s roads. Good to see you are using the car.
NOTE: In the video it states that this is also for Series III cars, this is incorrect. The Series III has a different style of front indicator. Apologies for any inconvenience caused.
Nice job. Looks like it will water proof the turn & running lights! Where can one buy the new front turn signal lights?
Hi Stephen, I think most of the U.K. Alpine suppliers such as Sunbeam Spares or Sunbeam Car Parts will have them. They seem to be on display at most Alpine shows. Check their websites.
Hello. Great video. I have just bought an alpine with the 1725 holbay engine. I noticed that on the upright pipe to the oil filler cap there is a pipe bellow which I have nothing attached- is it just a rubber hose I connect to it and where does it go. I’m new to these. Thanks
There is usually a rubber pipe that goes to the air filters on a standard Series V 1725 Alpine. There is another pipe from the tappet chest cover to a pollution control valve (pcv) in the inlet manifold. The idea was to reduce emissions. It is often removed and the pipe is vented to atmosphere under the car (unless the local rules prevent this). If the engine is healthy not many fumes comes out of either pipe.
