Bird and Magic are the reason I love basketball. As a young girl, I only enjoyed watching football until I saw those two play! I was a kid in the 80s and watching them was mesmerizing. Today, as a full grown woman, I still can't believe my eyes. It's almost like a work of art. Bird and Magic saved the NBA. ❤ Great reaction ♥
(nods) Same. And it was high art. After they, and MJ, left the pro game, it was, to be completely honest, not nearly as interesting to me--having seen Dr. J, Pistol, them, and, again, Jordan. Nobody else could compare. Consequently, I didn't watch much pro ball until the Lakers and Celtics squared off again in the Finals and the Thunder started up in OKC.
I was 20 miles down the road watching the playoff game against the Pacers. When he came back after literally breaking his face, you could practically feel Boston Garden shaking with the roar of the crowd. It was epic.
After he fell and fractured his right cheek and had a concussion, look at his right shoulder. There's a big bruise on it. He also had a headache and was seeing double. And this was all after spending a night in the hospital in traction for his back. He came back because he knew his team was in trouble and thought it might be the last time he might be able to play, so why not go out helping them. I find this video a bit confusing when they show the short clips of the Celtics and Lakers games, because I don't even think they are in order of the way the games happened. Check out the videos on how he was injured but kept coming back and playing with stuff that many wouldn't be able to do.
Nice to see that you finally checked this one out. I always prefer watching full games to get to understand how great players were that I didn't get to watch but when it comes to highlights, this mixtape is an incredible one of Bird. Nice that you chose this one to watch.
Finally! Bird was the GOAT before MJ. Assassin! I got him on my all-time starting 5. Think about this...Bird said he didn't even practice the 3 pt shot. Imagine him in today's game if he practices the 3 and take a bunch. Dude was the best shooter ever imo besides MJ. Curry is the best 3pt shooter. Difference to me. Check out birds #s in a season. Still nobody has accomplished what he has done pts, rebounds and assists for a season. Bird played in the old school physical league. Toughness. No traveling. No carrying. Everyone played defense. Notice his 3 pt contest in the video, he needed the last ball to go in to win, and he walked off towards the prize money check putting up the finger before it went in. He was legendary. My starting 5 is MJ, SHAQ, MAGIC, KOBE, BIRD. Mentality. Toughness. Hustle. Heart. Ability to take over and will your team to win through scoring. All qualities for my list
@@SHELOVEGROOVYI just mentioned this one in a comment. Didn't expect it to be good, but it explains their friendship. One of their moms invited the other to dinner while they were shooting their first commercial together.
Bird's court vision was INSANE! Probably the best but if not one of the best for sure. Loved watching Larry play when I was growing up. He would have had more MVP's if he played in today's game than the ones he did back in his era
I was fortunate enough (and old enough😂) to watch his whole career. My dad bought one of those (back in the day) ginormous satellite dishes so we could catch all the games. My pops was not a basketball guy but he admired Larry’s game and the way he handled himself. Good times indeed. RIP Dad❣️
Before the injuries started, Larry was making All-Defensive teams, postering people, hitting them Kyrie layups. People talking about him not being athletic just don't know about young Larry.
Larry’s off ball work was more dangerous than when he had the ball, watching him live you could see him developing a scoring play for his team not just him as a individual. His defense was that he was always in the perfect place for the angles and body leverage, he didn’t move people but he denied people access to the positioning they desired and wanted to be at, he didn’t defend, he denied
FINALLY.... you are the first person that I've seen that stops and reacts to that ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS LAYUP!! THANK YOU and well done adding the slo-mo! Keep learning about Bird, the player and the man....I GUARANTEE THAT YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED!! To me, Bird is EASILY the GREATEST ALL-AROUND PLAYER to ever pick up a basketball!!!!! Keep learning young fella! Much love and respect 🤙
As you watch more 80s will notice, Ive seen several times those Celtics teams with blood on thier jersey... they were a tough team, Pistons just took rough play to a whole new level.
Yeah Bird was actually great at finishing at the rim when he was younger. We don't know about it as much because a lot of the tape we see these days is of older Bird with the injured back.
BTW, that time he fractured his cheekbone in that playoff game vs Pacers, he also got concussed...and was seeing double for the rest of that game and for the next three weeks. . . He's the Man. I lived in Boston in the 80's and I saw it all.
Great documentary called Magic and Bird. I didn't expect much ofnit but really good and shows how they went from rivals to friends because one of their moms invited the other to dinner while they were shooting their first commercial together.
He also played with a busted back, that got putting in a driveway for his mom so he was constantly playing in pain and refused to take painkillers, and a mangled finger that he got in a baseball injury that never settled correctly. You'll notice it's quite crooked. Imagine if both of these things didn't affect his game. He had to retire early due to his back and was afraid of not being able to walk or pick his newborn up. Larry loved basketball :)
Came back in that Piston's game with a fracture of his right cheekbone.. and I've heard many stories.. all that man ever took for pain.. was a Tylenol or Advil.. Wow.. That's a tough SOB
Listen to the comments! Watch -> Larry Bird Greatest Passer of All Time (Re-edit w/ New Footage) Bird has more full court dimes than most people have regular assists...Your jaw will be on the ground and youll see why he's Larry Legend...passed like Magic, jumpshot like MJ, 3ptr like Curry, rebound like Ewing (avg 10rpg career)...
I think my favorite play on this was when he clotheslined Chambliss. I was lucky enough to watch him on television a lot. Nobody has ever convinced me that he wasn't the goat.🤘😎❤
I stopped watching basketball after those great games between the Celtics and the Lakers in the 80s because I knew I would never see playing like that again. Unfortunately I missed the whole Jordan era and everything that followed but I'm back enjoying the game again now. Enjoyed this reaction
The Bird & Magic era was the best. The college game was at its peak, feeding so much great talent into the NBA. So many teams with quality talent and good competition.
The GOAT 🐐 of all sports! No man ever played with more heart, bigger brain and field of vision. Work ethic off the charts. Immeasurable love of the game. Incredible ability to motivate and make everyone around him better. Everyone says he trash talked. No he didn't, he backed it up. Therefore it was telling it like it is not trash talk! 6:56 I have watched this shot go in, probably hundreds of times. I was always too distracted by the shot itself to notice the faces of the other team watching it go in 😂 Edit: 7:34 Oh yeah. That was some freaky white boi woodoo type a somethin.
Great reaction. One more thing I'd add though: Larry was an assassin. He has been called a cold blooded killer. In any case, he had ice water running in his veins in critical situations.
This video shows the only player, Michael Cooper of the Lakers, that Bird said was the only player that could guard him! In this clip, it shows Magic Johnson passing the ball to Michael Cooper at The Forum in L.A. for a dunk and a shot in the corner showing Michael Cooper guarding Bird. Bird still made the shot even though Michael Cooper was in his face. In case you didn't know Michael Cooper played for the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where I was raised and still live to this day! I loved watching The Lakers Celtics rivalries!
hockey player mentality. During the anthem at the Garden he would look at Bobby Orr's retired number. Should watch the interview with him, ted williams and bobby orr
Larry Bird is arguably the greatest of all time, being the best all player in the toughest era of the NBA. He performed at an extraordinary level, always playing until the final buzzer with no hint of quitting.
They don't call him Larry Legend for no reason and you know how he got injured? Shoveling gravel in his mom's driveway, straight up putting in blue collar work
In the game against the pistons where he fell and hit his head and come back he had fractured his right check and was seeing double but still hit every shot
When the Lakers beat Celtics in 85 Larry's shooting hand was freshly broken from bar fight. He hates to talk about it and has never used it as a excuse , but his numbers during series to average numbers tell the story... They got the back in 86
When people say Bird wasn’t Athletic, that wasn’t necessarily true. I would say in his young days he had average athleticism. But eventually with all that diving for balls shit, he messed up his back. Older Bird was stiff and not as athletic because of his back problems. But he had such a high IQ, he was still able to be extremely effective even in pain.

Magic vs Bird old guard players need to teach the modern NBA and it's young talent the skills and game that made the NBA move away from the brink of collapse and become profitable again back in the 80's. The viewership is down 53% now and the play is all about the Three pointer now. Where is the team vs team game long back and forth fast break offense? Where is the in the paint work? There seems to be a ton of recency bias when fans argue about who were the best players ever. A lot of younger fans seem to think that the only notable player before the current era was Michael Jordan, which is obviously absurd.
When are we gonna see a Larry Bird fan reacts to Lebum's greatest stat pads? Should be at least 200 hours of uncontested rebounds and points when the game's out of reach.
How many players today would go back in with a fractured cheekbone and double vision....and still win the game for his team? Bird was a different breed. And before all you young folks start talking about how much better today's players are: where do you think they all learned their techniques? Men like Bird - that's where! Of course, over time, as more and more techniques and strategies have been implemented, today's players are going to _seem_ better. If you've never had a game go so damn good that your opposing bench is cheering for YOU, then you ain't measurin' up to Larry Legend.
There will never be another LB. Fractures his cheek and not only plays but dominates to help his team win.
Magic was 100% when he said that to Larry, there never, EVER, will be another Larry Bird!
His re-edited passing video leaves zero doubts about his ability ever.

Nikola Jokic is moving like this today, but Bird was better in my opinion in defense. And people are wondering if Bird can play in today's NBA.
