Very nice interview.....all of this is long overdue....Jackie Wilson's extraordinary talent deserved movie documentaries etc after his tragic collapse on stage in 1975.
Jackie deserved first class medical care rather than the 3rd class care he sustained in New Jersey...So sad
....Any way it was really nice to finally see his daughter Brenda and his good friend and soulful guitarist Billy Davis ( a legend in my opinion ) .
....I was fortunate to have known Jackie Wilson as I was a recording engineer in New York City and saw him perform many times at the Apollo theatre during the middle 1960s..
In the history of rock and roll and great recording artists Jackie Wilson remains unmatched .

@@mikevallen999 all we ever hear about him is negativity, he worked with the mob, he was a rapist, he treated women like garbage etc etc. I’ve never seen a single documentary on him. They’ve got all these artists with movies made about them, Elvis, Freddy Mercury, etc. Where is Jackie Wilson’s movie and documentary that even gets a cinema release like all these others? I think it’s all the bad stories about him that has kept him from being as well known as those who borrowed from him.

The biggest connection Jackie Wilson had was with Elvis Presley the two of them were the same one black 1 white my influence each other and bounced off each other so well so much that's the main important thing that should have been mentioned and when he had his stroke his hospital bills were paid not by Berry Gordy or anyone else they were paid by a Elvis Presley that's the bond between them too

Here is part of the text I wrote in my column a few years back. I have yet to change my mind:
'With all of the so-called docudrama movies (Ray, La-Bamba, Lyman, Dream Girls, Elvis, Temptations, Janis Joplin, etc.) they've made over the past thirty-five years, I fail to understand why a movie has yet to be to be made with an unbelievable story, about an unbelievable talent, with an unbelievable voice, wrapped up in an unbelievable tragedy no screenwriter could ever devise. WHY NOT? Maybe the bigger problem would be 'Just who would play Jackie?' Let's face it, Jamie Foxx raised the bar so high in RAY, that no one watching the movie thought they were watching anyone BUT Ray Charles. Jamie Foxx was in awe of Ray Charles.
Foxx was obsessed with getting it right, whoever the actor is that would play Wilson MUST have the same focus. Plain & simple. That's the kind of performance that needs to be done with Jackie's story. For all the money Gordy made off of Wilson, HE (alone) should do it. Or maybe the Nat Tarnapol family? Then again, if those two entities were involved, it would be a 'hack' job, and not the truth that needs to come out.
If only Taylor Hackford would do the same (quality of movie) for Jackie that he did for RAY. Until then, Jackie & his contributions will remain largely unknown to many generations
    RIP great one!'

Ed Weichsler First of all , Jackie's Brunswick record label and management cheated him out of his royalties earnings.....when he collapsed on stage in the year 1975 he was in the midst of legal litigations against his management....there was also a mob entanglement.....therefore a movie on Jackie could involve exposing liable and risky lawsuits.....it's complicated and a mess.
Read the book by Tony Douglas titled " Jackie Wilson , The Man , The Music and The Mob " ......Tony feared for his life after the truth in the book was published and I believe he left this country and went back to Australia .
Anyway if ever a movie on Jackie would be made there is only one artist that would have the potential to carry the charisma that Jackie posessed...that singer would have been Terence Trent Darby.....unfortunately Terence left the the business.....He feared for his life and is now a Buddhist ....check out his fantastic recording of " Who's Loving You "....it's on Utube .
By the way I was New York City recording engineer and a friend of Jackie Wilson and you can see a photo of myself and Jackie Wilson in the " Google+ " app under " Jackie Wilson's Best "....just scroll down to the photos .
I hope this has been useful .

Ed Weichsler I beg to differ on one point. Nat Tarnapol owned the Brunswick Label at the time. Barbara Walters did a documentary on this. They shafted Jackie big time. On the label they allegedly, wrote, produced, directed his song. Funny how a 6wk old baby was the producer!!!! They took millions off Jackie. What they did was incomprehensible to me. They also did it to other groups of color, such as The Marvelettes, Please Mr. Postman and others. Complete scheisters! They would never do a movie about Jackie bcs I am pretty damned sure their seedy involvement would be brought to light, as it very well should be. Jackie died a pauper and placed in a seedy nursing home. He was more or less a vegetable waiting for death. Michael Jackson bought a head stone for his grave and God bless him for that. One of the greatest singers of all time is virtually a unknown!

They’d never make a movie about him because then they’d actually have to elevate a very talented black man to play him. And this industry isn’t about propping up talented brothers for success. They prop up the half-assed mediocre ones. Avery Wilson would do great as Jackie Wilson.

So basically the book is based on other peoples’ recollections and not about her actual experiences with her dad. Billy Davis’ claim to fame is that he was always in the background with some of the greatest soul singers while having no distinction of his own. His greatest achievement is that he lived to be an old man with a ridiculous wig while Sam, Jackie, Otis and an endless list of great singers died young.

Understood. With regards to them being racist, I would argue that that is not likely it. Note that , a number of Elvis songs were taken from his Black counterparts. Many radio stations , at that time, would not play 'Black music' and black artist had no recourse when someone, in this case, Elvis, would take their songs and re-record them. If anything, Elvis should have thanked them for many of his 'hits'.
