Do you agree?
yes 👍
yes 👍
Nah, Angel def the most egotistical ump there is
yeah
I'm still trying to figure out what adminished means.
I highly recommend making a video on John Libka. He's a younger ump but is starting to make waves about how GOOD he is. Not too long ago he almost called a perfect game. I think showing this guy some praise would be well deserved.
Yea, JomBoy vid was nice on him
@@kingdingaling2469 I'll have to check it out, thanks
@@kingdingaling2469 he pretending he didn't watch that jomboy vid already
@@kingdingaling2469 yeah I saw that that guy called a great game and from what he said he's been doing that consistently for a few years now
@@jackl6121 At the time I didn't, just saw the score card on twitter and read comments about him. Thanks for being assuming and rude though! Nothing like a random attack on a friendly youtube comment.
Joe West is a legend if you're asking Joe West.
A legend in his own mind.
Joe is the most egotistical imo.
Literally came to comment that exactly. Joe West is pure trash.
He's gonna be in the hall of fame. Even if we hate him. He's going to be.
He's a total ass.
Joe West is the inspiration for Robo-Umpires and an Automated Strike Zone. West is a Dinosaur.
Joe and angel Hernandez
I don't watch much baseball, but I would be more interested if the strike zone was automated.
@@lifeisfairitkillseveryone536 that's a pretty dumb reason to not be watching. These guys aren't perfect but many of them get it right a high percentage of the time.
Now that West has set the record for most games (which is mind boggling to realize he has been so bad for such a long time) he should be forced into retirement.
That is so untrue, Joe has the highest rated strike zone and lowest reverse call rate.
His persona clouds his real effective umpiring.
Wait, if grabbing your groin in a game is enough to get you ejected, how is Juan Soto even allowed in the MLB at this point?
That’s what I thought
Remember that time Many Ramirez went into the scoreboard at Fenway and took a piss in the middle of the inning?
@@nomar5spaulding That was legendary, top ten baseball moments of all time.
@@nomar5spaulding Seriously, I never heard of that one.
In all honesty, I think the Bobby Valentine one tops them all.
I'd leave a comment, but I'd be worried about getting hit with a defamation lawsuit.
I do agree Joe West has a huge ego but if we're talking about the absolute king of ego I think Ron Kulpa can give anyone a run for that title. The guy got caught on a hot mic saying he can do whatever he wants when talking about his dog crap calls.
100 percent
I may hate Culpa more than Angel Hernandez tbh…
Or Gary Darling back in the day. He had an ego the size of Alaska and Texas put together
Laz Diaz, Sam Holbrook for "Umpires I hate"
John Libka for "We need more of these"
Ron Kulpa is another douche of an umpire
Add Angel Hernandez to that list!!!
I’ve heard it said that Joe seemed to think that fans came to see him umpire 🥳
I agree, I've never heard of anyone wanting to go down to the ballpark and spend their money to watch the umpire.
@@normanhopkins6114 my mom watched my first professional soccer match (referee). I later told her “you’re the only person who came to watch the referee.”
I love how these triple-chinned umps in their mid-70s start shit with professional athletes in the prime of their lives just because they know the players can't hit them.
meh... if i made 10 million, id take a shot.
if i argued with an authority figure at work, id be fired. why are these overpaid cry babies any different?
@@jackquinn1158 umpires aren’t their managers
@@TenshinhanIsKing ya think?!? no sh1t sherlock. the umpires are the law on the field. if i get into a heated argument with anyone at my job…. i run the risk of termination. if contact is made i would be terminated. which is the way with 99% of all other jobs. which is my point.
Fun fact about Joe West: he has been umpiring longer than any current player, and at least 3 current managers, have been ALIVE. It's long been time to go.
"2021 will be Joe West last season." Thank God!!!
Thanks you so much
A considerable chunk of this video was taken from Wikipedia with very few edits. Wikipedia says:
"In 2010, West sparked controversy by criticizing the slow pace of the recently completed series between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox, which he called "pathetic and embarrassing".[20] Red Sox manager Terry Francona referred to the remarks as "troubling", while Yankees closer Mariano Rivera remarked, "If he has places to go, let him do something else."[21] Columnist Wallace Matthews defended West, saying the umpire was simply expressing what people had been thinking for a long time.[22] West was not fined by MLB for his comments, but was "admonished firmly," according to press reports.[23] On May 26, 2010, West made two controversial balk calls on Mark Buehrle and consequently ejected White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen for arguing and Buehrle for throwing his glove.[24] On August 26, 2010, West was the plate umpire for Albert Pujols’ 400th career home run.[25]
On September 14, 2014, West ejected Jonathan Papelbon for the lewd act of adjusting his groin, resulting in a confrontation where West grabbed Papelbon's jersey.[26] MLB subsequently suspended Papelbon for seven games for his lewd act and West for one game for initiating contact with Papelbon, marking the first umpire suspension since Fieldin Culbreth's May 2013 suspension for misapplication of baseball rules and the first on-field misconduct suspension of an umpire since Bob Davidson's May 2012 suspension for situation handling violations related to his ejection of Phillies Manager Charlie Manuel.[27] West later claimed Papelbon had initiated first contact,[26] but Major League Baseball determined that the video replay showed West was not correct, and that the contact was initiated by West.[28]"
Doing plagiarism and using Wikipedia as a source? His teachers must hate him 😂
your absolutely correct. Joe West is huge on his ego. i’m an umpire and worked with a guy who “did not care” (his own words) about teams or players. hoping i don’t see HIM in major leagues like Joe West is
I’ve hated Joe West since 1992. I can’t remember the calls that me hate him, but as a Phillies fan his general presence just pissed off the entire city and region.
Me when clicking the video: I bet it’s Joe West
Me after clicking the video: Yep that’s about right.
When I was 5 or 6 I actually handed out the Braves lineup card at a game. Got to meet Joe West, C.B. Buckner, and a few other umpires as well as Lou Piniella, who was managing the Cubs. Joe actually handed me a quarter out of his pocket and told me it belonged to Bobby Cox, and that I should return it to him, so I got to meet Bobby too.
If the channel disappears in 120 days or so gets renamed Joe's fun times in classic cars we'll know he sued you and won the channel as payment
Lol West won tye case because West never umped a game with pual duca in itm
Can't be defamation if all of the statements of fact are true.
i only know 2 umps by name. Blow West & Devil Hernandez.
the rest must be pretty decent.
@Daniel Silver Bucknor at least doesn't have a huge ego, which is why he's not as hated even though he makes worse calls than Hernandez.
@Daniel Silver exactly especially after that game 2 of ALDS last year
Bucknor is not hated because he’s a nice guy. A bad umpire but a nice guy. Joe West and Angel Hernandez are bad umpires and assholes
@@Mark-sj3xb I include CB because of that ALDS last year doesn’t help being a Yankees fan but he seemed like he let the Rays win on purpose
He is definitely the worst one of the worst umpires I've ever seen! I agree totally with this video. Why can't MLB get rid of him?
No umpire should be a household name.
He has a good zone whenever I see him call balls and strikes
I wouldn't have been suprised if the catcher threw that ball at him on purpose.
He reminds me of the kind that thinks he's always right and doesn't like to hear otherwise . He uses his power (ejection) to avoid being told he's wrong.
2:01 The fat from his neck literally covers the shirt’s logo. Don’t know that I’ve ever seen that before lol
2:43 LoL after video review his call was overturned! 🤣🤣
Here’s a fun fact:
When the umps went on strike Joe went with them… then when they were reinstated MLB weeded out the poor performing umps. ( ex: Eric Gregg) Joe was called back.
Additionally, Joe has the lowest reverse calls and highest correct strike zone.
Some folks that know him personally say he’s really a very likable guy.
He’s certainly a no nonsense ump, nevertheless it’s easy to pile on him for his confrontations.
Thanks for the UA-cam post 👍
I don't know him personally, and have never had a bad opinion of him professionally. I always thought he was a pretty good ump, & I would imagine it takes a big ego to deal with a LOT of the over paid prima donna egotistical MLB players.
Jim Joyce would be a good topic, he was well respected by players and managers but will always be known for his blown call on Armando Galaraga's perfect game.
Which is unfortunate, seeing as he was one of the best umpires to call the game. Leland respected him so much that all he said to Joyce was, "You screwed up Jimmy." Joyce went immediately to the dugout after the next out to watch the replay monitor to see if he missed it.
Jim Joyce took it like a man and admitted he royally screwed up. Joe West and Angel Hernandez would still be throwing a tantrum for being called out on it.
Yah, Joyce was a good one
Joe West looking at Francona like he's cotton candy and a porkchop.
Like a cross between Mr. Magoo and a marshmallow.
I'ma be honest idk why players and coaches argue. Like what do they expect? the ump isn't gonna reverse the call and they're just going to get ejected
pfft, I can't believe these umps get away with what they do. Nobody comes out to see them. They should be more heavily scrutinized, and held accountable for their actions, both good AND BAD.
Nothing was worse than my 10u umpire once. He called anything below your head a strike no matter if it was in the opposite batters box or hitting the plate.
I had an ump before the game to give us the lay of "HIS" land. He said " eye balls to shoe stings, box to box." You were expected to swing or be called a strike basically. He didn't like long games and made sure of it.
@@brucecarson1778 that’s terrible! If coach’s are paying for umps pay for good ones, not up,s who go get paid to make bad calls.
@@Pinkthephantommm tbats just it these guys were paid by the village lol. These were rostered umps game in and game out in this village. So the coaches tge players no one had a say in it unfortunately. The only good thing was he was equally unfair even to both home and away teams.
Does that include balls in the dirt? Either way, thats terrible that an ump would do that to either of you
@@RealBlueony yes but we still won 😂
Yep, like others have commented, a video about an umpire who has an incredibly high rate of getting strikes and balls correct, has the the respect of players and managers, and doesn't make himself the center of attention would be good.
No one would watch it. A good umpire would always tell you that you’ve called a good game if no one notices that you were even there.
Jomboy has a video about a young umpire named John Libka I believe, worth a watch if that’s what you’re looking for.
POV: you just watched an epic video by a UA-camr with 8k subscribers, yet has more talent Than every ESPN journalist.
in 2015 he called a balk on Sanchez, which was a terrible call, but it turned around the Bluejays and that was a turning point to the season and they made the playoffs for the first time in 22 years.
@4:04 lol, that throw was a mile off the mark blame the catcher for that one.
Definitely wasn't on purpose...
Great video, maybe you can make a video about a good umpire, like John Libka, next
"Joe West kind of got in the way..."
Looked like he threw right at him instead of his own guy 😆
I personally don't think there's anything wrong with Joe West I think he's good for the game, he's not a terrible umpire, and he's got a decent personality
Good video. Most of my life I thought MLB umpires were generally great, but there has been a steady decline the past couple of decades. Their inability or unwillingness to remove Angel a long time ago is outrageous, but lesser sins certainly include allowing Joe West to feel empowered to act so inappropriately at times. My top request for an umpire video from you: focus on the direct conflict of interest of having umpires judge themselves by rotating into the sealed NY studio to review and decide on replays. They are NOT impartial judges. Their predilection to go with the call on the field is not reasonable, it simply represents their partiality and conflict of interest as judges....the judges must be impartial and not members of the club. This is the core problem with the frustration we all feel with the replay system.
They’ve always been bad, h there’s just never been enough evidence to back it up until recently.
Do a video on an umpire with the best accurate strike and ball zone calls by the last name or Liptka, he has a 99% rating vs others who have in the low 80s
I think Joe West just remembers the days when baseball games took 2 hours instead of 3 hours and 30 mins
Yet a pitcher he threw out once was one that was known for helping keep the games short.
I thought 2 hours was how long it took him to eat.
@@TeamRocketHQR that would carry the assumption that he ever stops
Man plz do the Umpire that blew the perfect game i still cant believe that to this day
Another umpire i remember pitchers hated was "balking" Bob Walk. Every time you look up, dude was calling balks on everybody.
Ik he’s retired but maybe talk bout jim joyce
Best empire ive seen in the MLB.
I've seen a few Blue Jay games where Joe West just ignores the replay when there is a challenge when he's wrong and sticks to his original call, even though there is evidence he's wrong
That's just Joe West being Joe West.
West is a throw back to old umpiring. I love it
So you love bad calls and interfering in games for no reason. Gotcha
@@jw7665 I'll take it over the baseball we have today
I agree with the idea of examining a good umpire. As a baseball fan that pays attention, I've rarely if ever heard in depth description of why an umpire is good, and don't know who the good umpires are in the game today. It's easy to hate on these guys (I do as much as anyone, but), I'd like to see what the good umpires are doing. Thanks for the videos and keep it up!
I dunno who it is, Jomboy I think did a video on him, but there is some young kid who is apparently a fantastic umpire. Recently had a game that was nearly perfect and apparently, if I recall, has one of the best records for calling the game correctly.
Found it: John Libka. Do a video on him if you can. We need to recognize the good umps as much as the bad ones.
No room in baseball for this. He has been doing this for 20+ years
West is a legend! 🤔 In his own mind.
I’m just waiting until Angel Hernandez finally quits
Yes please do keep making videos on Umpires especially current Umpires
You should do C.B buknor
Yes!
There is hardly anyone talking about his bad calls
Seen him behind the plate during a couple Phillies games this year and was wondering if I was alone thinking that his strike zone blows. Glad to see I’m not alone!
Best umpire I've seen would have to be Frank Drebin, he was classic!
I'll agree with that
Angel and Joe sitting in a tree
M I S S I N G calls
I didn't know West's history so I actually found him to look like a nice fellow. Though I disagree that he's a bad umpire, his image has changed for me after this video. I do believe though that fame and success may get to anyone's head if they're lucky enough to experience it. None of his calls that I know of are crazy to the point that we don't know what went on, we know it's ego and that the player/manager did something refs are known not to like. Anyway, great video!
I don't know about a specific umpire. But could you do a video on why we may not need umpires at home plate anymore? We have the electronics now which would be more accurate.
Joe West is also a bad ump. He's pretty close to Angel Hernandez territory.
I think he’s around average no where near Angel Hernandez
I don't remember seeing West umpiring Oriole games but I saw Hernandez a week or so ago and there were some questionable calls early in the game. Didn't amount to much though and neither side saw any arguments or ejections. Hernandez is much worse than West.
I still remember Game 3 of the 1992 World Series when Joe West was umpiring home plate. Someone on the Atlanta Braves threw a helmet on to the field, and Lonnie Smith was originally believed to have thrown the helmet, but a photo clearly shows not only Smith but ALL the other players ratting out their manager Bobby Cox! West can clearly be seen pointing to the Braves dugout saying, "You threw that? (to Lonnie) Who threw that? (to Cox)". Cox was subsequently ejected.
I was at that game in the first row in center field. I didn't even remember Joe West umping this game. I remember Devon White's incredible catch on David Justice that should've been a triple play and I remember the Jays winning in the bottom of the 9th. I believe Candy Maldonado won it for the Jays.
If weren’t for the umpires the game would be boring as hell, besides players would argue a strike right down the middle.
My first thought when I seen it was ab Joe West...... Armando Gallaragga peeks around the corner 👀 👀
Bro your channel is blowing up and I’m loving it 💪💪
thank you for being a part of the channel!
1:33 That's a World Class FUPA
Before Joe West was named, I would have thought the video would be about Ron Culpa.
Now we just have Angel Hernandez to F things up when he isn't mowing West's lawn.
Joe West - You are not missed.
Major League Baseball has a huge problem with the umpires they use
Unless the umpires union cracks down on accuracy of calls, and professionalism on the field of play, they are in serious jeopardy of becoming obsolete with the technology available to do the job better with automated systems
Compared to former MLB umpire Doug Harvey, Joe West is the picture of humility.
This video mentioned "whether you love him or hate" him multiple times but like...does anyone actually like Joe West? Its one thing to find him comical or entertaining but I feel like the people who would outright say they like him is extremely extremely small
"Why didn't you call that a strike" -The Catcher
"You took off on me." -The Umpire
"Oh, so it was my fault." -The Catcher
If everyone liked hes not doing his job...like him or not ...umping the most games by any mlb umpire consistency is needed and that he did
!! Joe West...Welcome to the Hall of Fame isn't far away
At least he knows how to vote
Came for talking shit about Angel. Stayed for talking shit about Joe West. 10/10.
We see so many on bad umps or their calls, how about a video on the best or most respected umpires in the game.
Love the video. (P.S. Just pointing out that the word is “admonished”, not “adminished”.)
I'm not a huge fan of Joe West, but then again, I wasn't exactly enamored with Papelbon when he was on my home team.
West certainly initiated the hand-to-body contact - but Papelbon had already bumped him by that point. Papelbon did make the first physical contact.
Even after retirement he pisses us off. Just once would we like to see the catcher miss a high fast ball, and now we won't.
Joe West has the body of a melted candle.
I don't know a lot about baseball, so can someone please explain to me what's going on in the clip at 5:31
Can you document some really good ones, like Doug Harvey?
I don’t think Bumgarner thought that pitch was a strike. Rather, I think he was just frustrated with himself as far as where the pitch ended up.
How about making a video about the umpires with the most inconsistent strike zones? Tom Hallion has a very inconsistent strike zone.
I like joe west better than angel Hernandez. But I’ll be honest we should appreciate all the umpires that work hard and stand at each position to make calls for the games cause if it weren’t for umpires what would baseball be like if there were no umpires.
Every single time the Yankees play the Red Sox (especially in Boston), the games go well over 3 hours for a nine inning game. Joe West is making this up.
He’s always going to be the worst ever for me simply because in addition to being really bad, he ushered in the era of The Ump Show and made them virtually untouchable for punishment.
It’s always weird hearing starwars music in these videos but not bad
once upon a time you could speak your mind on a ball field..not delay a game or get physical were the only parameters
In his past life he must have been a construction Foreman
Joe is terrible, and the game has passed him by by decades at this point. That’s said, Joe never caught an inning thrown by Wagner and caught by Lo Duca, which in his story Lo Duca claimed he did and that’s when the bribing was brought up. So you can’t blame the guy for suing for defamation considering it literally didn’t happen.
I can’t stand Angel Hernandez, but over the years I’ve come to kind of like West a little. For an Ump.
He’s ight.
@@kingdingaling2469 Joe West is kind of an asshole. Angel is legitimately incompetent at the job. They’re on different levels of suck
I got to correct you on one thing. The thing with Adrian Beltran was not Adrian Beltran defending him. That was just him saying it wasn't necessary. You know why? It's because he didn't care. There's a big difference between defending somebody and just not giving a crap.
The Joey Crawford of baseball.
Joe West: Tiny hat, huge head
Thank God he's an ump and not a cop. Imagine how bad that would be
He’s also put several buffets out of business, so that’s something.
Him saying he'd vote for Donald is all I need to know about him.
He’s finally gone forever!!! Hooray!!!! 🎉
