Blue Moon is my favourite beer. Its decent in the UK, like you say, on a summers day in a beer garden.. Nothing quite like drinking it, in orlando with a slice of Florida Orange 🍊🍻
As a Newcastle United fan I would love to see Newcastle Brown Ale against Double Maxim from Sunderland. I really enjoyed our beer as a youngster, but the Double Maxim is a really solid beer now, and the Maximus is very good. I haven't bought ours for a few years now but I still buy Maxim/Maximus on occasion. It always surprises me when a brewery is bought out and the beer dies on it's arse, maybe the passion gets lost along the way, cheers for the show.
Blue Moon is fermented with a regular neutral American ale yeast, i believe - so it's not a real Belgian style. But glucose syrup won't contribute sweetness, it's a way of adding fermentables without using malts. Sweetness in a beer is brought in by other methods (mash temp, yeast, unfermentables, etc).
Done the same beer battle on my channel a week ago Simon. Hoegaarden was the clear winner for me but nice to see a different opinion. I didn't notice the sweetness in the Hoegaarden as a issue great content as always cheers bosch 🍻
Hi Simon, very Good review, you are the defender of craft beers and you are also very honest with yourself and all your fans ! Tks for all ! Cheers from Brittany !
Simon, in the US, Blue Moon is always served with a slice of Orange. That said, would that slice of Orange make up for the lack of taste? I was leaning toward the Hoegarden until you mentioned the Glucose Syrup which sent me screaming in the other direction. Cheers
Do you know if glucose syrup was added to fermentation tank or after? For my knowledge you usually add it or sugar before fermentation to make beer less sweet.
Blue Moon and Hoegaarden are fairly pleasant beers, nice taste of coriander.... I find if they sell it in pubs, they put too much of a premium price on it, always guaranteed to be over £5 a pint...
First time I tried blue moon was in America. Clearwater beach about 7 years ago Great on draught Shock top do a very similar one which I would say I prefer.
😊 nice review Simon, I like the Blue Moon, a local in Newbury does it on draft. I think whetherspoons offered it at one point on draft, not sure if they still do.
Blue Moon is much better than Shock Top, which is AB-Inbev's take on a witbier. Blue Moon was first brewed in the basement of the Coors Field baseball stadium in Denver, CO.
A few years ago, I was with my family in the Hungry Monk in Southport. We were about to order drinks from the menu and I decided on a pint of draught Blue Moon, never having seen it before. I then went to the bog. When I returned the drinks were on the table. I was a little dumbstruck, as mine was served in what appeared to be a jamjar with a slice of orange. Actually, it wasn't too bad, but I don't remember having a second pint.
Good vid again simon. I know I mentioned it on another video but since I tried nukie brown again when you said it had improved. I've wanted to see a battle between newcastle brown VS double maxim if it's possible. I still haven't had maxim yet and want to know if it's superior still even though nukie has improved 👍
What about a comparison of Maibock/Heller Bock beers when it's time around May? 🤔 Maybe North vs South - Einbecker, Holsten and Flensburger vs. Augustiner, Hofbräu and Kloster Weltenburg...🍻
Hey Simon, I'd love to see a battle of all the great German doppelbocks. There's some really amazing beers in this category. Weihenstephaner Korbinian, Paulaner Salvator, Ayinger Celebrator, Spaten Optimator, Augustiner Maximator, etc. Cheers! 🍻
The glucose syrup is a normal part of traditional belgian brewing, it doesn't add sweetness as it's a very simple sugar and gets eaten by the yeast, it's just an adjunct, the same as adding candy sugars to a belgian blonde or tripple. Any sweetness is from the malts and mashing schedule. Pliny the Elder has a lot of corn sugar added to its mash, this doesn't add any sweetness,in fact it dries the beer out as it adds easily fermented sugars with no extra malt flavour or complex sugars the yeast can't metabolise. Adding adjunct sugars is a very common, traditional brewing method in most of the world.
Interestingly. I really enjoy a blue moon. Had it first on a stag do and so by the end of the night I’d forgotten I’d even had it. But my new girlfriend has a pub round the corner which serves blue moon. And on the off chance, popped in for one. Nice slice of orange in it. Nice ale flavour but also sweeter than a dark ale (I’m not a big ale fan in general). I found it totally refreshing and ended up having 2 or 3 more after that 😂 Definitely a beer for when the time is right though. I couldn’t just pick one up and drink it like I would a lager, like Peroni, moretti etc. Overall, really nice beer though.
If you haven't done it already, you could do some kind of Battle of the Belgian Dubbels or Tripels or BOTH. That be interesting to see. Also, you may need to take a good nap after haha.
I buy and like both of these beers. I get what Simon says about the orange been amplified in the Hoegaarden. But for me Bluemoon wins, as once you add that’s recommended slice of orange it amplifies the flavour. Maybe that’s why they don’t put more in to start as once you add the slice it would then be too much as that slice of orange adds a nice uniqueness and freshness . I still like both and will still buy both but if I could only drink one it would be Bluemoon with the orange slice.
I was once sniffily told off by an elderly Belgian gentleman for pronouncing it "Ho-garden". Apparently it's correctly pronounced "Hoo-garden". Lovely beer!
Absolutely love that Hoegaarden after a year of living in Belgium. Impossible to find in the UK, but I worked in India for a while and it's absolutely everywhere there, lucky bastards! (I will say though that the blue moon pub in Brussels is absolute paradise for any beer lover)
Awesome ! Finally beer I have experience with ! They're both very good, you have to have both with orange slices ! I worked at a casino and they had blue moon on tap !
If you're still looking for vs ideas, why not try Home bargains Export Stout battle? They have Jamaican Dragon Stout and Nigerian Guinness Export at similar strength and prices. Noth bursting with flavour!
I think you are correct to judge a beer on its individual merits, and not be prejudiced because of who brews it. In America, I personally prefer Hoegaarden, but Blue Moon is good, too. To me, Hoegaarden has a bit of a more of a what taste, which I prefer.
I love a good Belgian white, all the flavours you described. Duvel and some others are excellent. Blue Moon is the cheap lager equivalent but it could be worse!
Blue moon v Hogarden...😅 loved the review: coriander + orange peel + malt + glucose syrup, a world of flavours. Please mix the drinks and see if it's better.
Love the Hoegarden but could never take to the Blue Moon as I had a sour pint of it one time, maybe due to it not being very popular here in Dublin I would love to see you review Kilkenny Irish cream It’s kind of like a red ale with a Guinness head I’m sure you have tried it but I would like to see your thoughts on it V’s another red ale Cheers dude love the channel
I'm very fond of Blue Moon. One of very few non ales brewed in the UK which is actually very decent imo. Fond of Hoegaarden too- but preferably on a hot day.
I think you should do some blind tasting beer reviews... that would be interesting.... mel cam decide .... can even do a Vs you already done .. takes the brand and opinions out
Blue Moon is severely underrated, it is the best Macro version of a White. However, i prefer Miller/Coors over Anheiser In Bev. Blue Moon is the gateway of American craft next to Boston lager.
Pints of hoegaarden in pub with slice of orange ,perfect. Bottles of hoegaaden not that nice. Bought blue moon in bottles in Tesco Ireland 4x330 ml bottles 8 euro. Added slice of orange and slightly refrigerated and it was awesome. Now only drink Hoegaarden once in the blue moon while watching man city.👍
You should have compared the Hoegaarden against a Brugs Witbier, but then again, I know which one would win anyway. (Unless they've changed the Brugs.)
Haven't had Hg for years but I'm in no rush if it's spanked full of the dreaded glucose syrup. BM is yet another victim of the ill advised UK brewing industry.. I used to enjoy it but last time I subjected myself to it I found it undrinkable
What’s the point of adding an orange slice to a beer already containing orange? Belgian bars add a slice of lemon so the contrast brings out the flavours and they serve it mainly on draught. Hoegaarden is a town / city in Belgium so the Netherlands link is a bit tenuous, furthermore it was only created in the 50’s or 60’s by a local of Hoegaarden based on a traditional style so is only actually 60 years old. It used to be higher ABV before InBev got their hands on it, I think it was 5.3 😎😇
Blue moon is a clone of hoegaarden. Hoegaarden is the original witbier. I don’t know how you can say the blue moon is more authentic. Belgians have been adding Candi sugar to their beers for hundreds of years
Another great video! I only turned 18 last autumn so I didn't really know anything about beer, but your channel has certainly helped me out a lot!
Hoegaarden is good, but ALLAGASH White, it's beary good!
Oh great... "brewed in the Uk" I already know not to try it.

You'll hardly ever see Hoegaarden in the pubs anymore. I wonder why... hmm..
Blue Moon is my favourite beer.

Excellent, thoughtful review Simon.
Guiness v Beamish v Murphys

As Kenneth Williams once said, “I can't stand innuendo. If I see one in a script I whip it out immediately!”

Hoegaarden is far better and much better value for money. Picked 5 up yesterday in B&M for £2.50 a bottle.
My go to at the minute for a continental beer
Paulaner wiess on thd sub V Franzikaner on the PD would be fantastic

Sticking a fresh orange slice in the Blue Moon is a common way to serve it... and makes it more orangey.
Do you know if glucose syrup was added to fermentation tank or after? For my knowledge you usually add it or sugar before fermentation to make beer less sweet.
Probably my two favourite beers. Tapps in Llandudno sell Blue Moon on draught with a slice of orange - bloody gorgeous
Blue Moon and Hoegaarden are fairly pleasant beers, nice taste of coriander.... I find if they sell it in pubs, they put too much of a premium price on it, always guaranteed to be over £5 a pint...
I live down south pal, I’m lucky to find a pub that serves fosters for less than a fiver 😂
blindfold challenge - can u guess which beer is which? which crisp flavours are which? which chicken crisps taste most like ham?
First time I tried blue moon was in America.
Clearwater beach about 7 years ago
Great on draught
Shock top do a very similar one which I would say I prefer.
😊 nice review Simon, I like the Blue Moon, a local in Newbury does it on draft. I think whetherspoons offered it at one point on draft, not sure if they still do.
They still do at some locations.
Wetherspoons tend to have Leffe these days..
A video or Paulaner vs Frankie would be good.
Blue Moon is much better than Shock Top, which is AB-Inbev's take on a witbier. Blue Moon was first brewed in the basement of the Coors Field baseball stadium in Denver, CO.
Thanks Simon appreciate u doing this lol!

What about a vs cans vs bottles same beer. Or brewed in place of origin (imported) vs brewed in uk same beers
i love Hoegaarden, never tried the blue moon, don't think i've ever seen it sold locally
Abree about taste but. Luke Moon everywhere now especially in draught
If you love Hoegaarden don't bother with Blue Moon, it doesn't come close
@@jimbo4375 cheers i'll avoid it then

You forgot Andechser...
And of course Weltenburger Kloster Asam-Bock
Thanks Simon I completely agree with u. 100% correct.
Hoegarden for the win for me.
Blue moon is ok but way overpriced for what it is. It's priced as though its imported.
That's so true, only buy it when it's 4 cans for 3quid from the old Heron 😂
@@yhtorb
Oh yeah, was in there recently and spotted 4 for £4...so bought 8 👌😂

looking forward to trying both of these....the Hoegaarden sounded great until you mentioned the added sugar...interested to see how they taste...
Any chance of you reviewing the Staropramen Unfiltered?
He already did it

I had that from a waiter in Bruges too
All the same what you call it if you have the Johnny cash in your pocket to buy it.👍
Two of my favourite beers. Always a bonus if you find either on tap. Hoegaarden very rare though.
Hey Simon. Could you please do a similar review comparing Brewdog Hazy Jane v Northern Monk Faith. Both good IPAs.
Hoegaarden is from Belgium, not Netherlands, close to Leuven - which is why it has been in the ABInBev, even predecessor Interbrew, group for decades.
If you're still looking for vs ideas, why not try Home bargains Export Stout battle? They have Jamaican Dragon Stout and Nigerian Guinness Export at similar strength and prices. Noth bursting with flavour!
i think the glucose comes from the candi sugar used in loads of Belgian beers
How about a comparison of the Wrexham lager variants? There is 3 I think 🤔
I think you are correct to judge a beer on its individual merits, and not be prejudiced because of who brews it. In America, I personally prefer Hoegaarden, but Blue Moon is good, too. To me, Hoegaarden has a bit of a more of a what taste, which I prefer.

It’s not a lager and blue moon is a Belgian white beer
@@louisbeerreviews8964 I meant it's like the 'cheap lager' of Belgian white beers. Like a meh quality mass-produced version
Hogarden £2.50 from home bargains 750ml! Can't go wrong!!
Hoegaarden was one of the first beers I started to like, about 17 years of age. Up until then it was cider or alcopops.
Blue moon v Hogarden...😅 loved the review: coriander + orange peel + malt + glucose syrup, a world of flavours. Please mix the drinks and see if it's better.
Love the Hoegarden but could never take to the Blue Moon as I had a sour pint of it one time, maybe due to it not being very popular here in Dublin
I would love to see you review Kilkenny Irish cream
It’s kind of like a red ale with a Guinness head
I’m sure you have tried it but I would like to see your thoughts on it V’s another red ale
Cheers dude love the channel
I'm very fond of Blue Moon. One of very few non ales brewed in the UK which is actually very decent imo. Fond of Hoegaarden too- but preferably on a hot day.
Budweiser v Pabst Blue Ribbon. The cans are almost identical. B+M used to sell large cans of the Pabst and imo it knocked spots off Bud.
I think you should do some blind tasting beer reviews... that would be interesting.... mel cam decide .... can even do a Vs you already done .. takes the brand and opinions out
Frankie v Paulaner please 🍻
I mean we are splitting hairs here and Hoegaarden is cheaper where i live so i won´t have too many Blue Moons.
Absolutely love Hoegaarden! Best Belgian white. Also a fan of drinking it from some big jug........
Do original desperados vs Amigos. Both are mainstream Tequila flavoured lagers but which one do you think is better?
Blue Moon is severely underrated, it is the best Macro version of a White. However, i prefer Miller/Coors over Anheiser In Bev. Blue Moon is the gateway of American craft next to Boston lager.

Hello sime. Maybe try hoegaarden and blue moon as half and half. Hoemoon?
You should have compared the Hoegaarden against a Brugs Witbier, but then again, I know which one would win anyway. (Unless they've changed the Brugs.)
Blue Moon uses corn syrup. It's certainly not all malt.
Hoegaarden used to be so much better. Blue Moon is serviceable, but a bit bland.
Added glucose is one of the things I dislike about Belgian beer.
Not in Belgium strong ales IT’s has Belgian candi sugar
In my opinion extremely hard choice. I love bouth of there beers the same!
Haven't had Hg for years but I'm in no rush if it's spanked full of the dreaded glucose syrup.
BM is yet another victim of the ill advised UK brewing industry.. I used to enjoy it but last time I subjected myself to it I found it undrinkable
brewed since 1445…! is that not a quarter to three ?
Hoegaarden tastes better out of their classic flowerpot glasses .
Iconic
Perfect draught beers against their bottled/canned equivalent?
So blue moon is a better beer, because it’s a pure beer but hoegaarden is a better drink. Got it!
I do enjoy and cold draft Hoegaarden on a hot day. Its cool in a bottle to. Blue Moon, for me, is like a poor imitation of Hoegaarden .
What’s the point of adding an orange slice to a beer already containing orange? Belgian bars add a slice of lemon so the contrast brings out the flavours and they serve it mainly on draught. Much prefer the Hoegaarden. My heart sinks every time I go into a boozer and Blue Moon is the offering but that's just me.
Some guy with ponytail gave me some Craft stuff Blew my entire Ring piece out after it Hospital now getting Resleived called Ooh AArrrs
Kronenburg blanc was the better of those. Shame no longer sold in uk, hasnt for a few yrs.
You can get it in Malaysia
@@louisbeerreviews8964 😆.. thanks.. I could get it from France as well. Just the journey that's the issue.
It's another Coors vs Anheuser-Bush. I think there are much better beers for the same price.
I love your reviews by the way. The enthusiasm and passion are awesome!
The Belgiums love their glucose syrup.
It’s candi sugar
I love Hoegaarden, very refreshing on a warm day.
Tegernsee Hells v Augustiner Brau Hells
Big jugs of joy!!
superb
I like big jugs, but not a big jug because I drink slow and the beer gets warm.
Simon you spent two thirds of 1995 as a 16 year old 😆🤣
Blue moon far too heavy on the ‘orangey’ taste for me. Much rather Hoegaarden out of these two although slightly disappointed in the glucose syrup.
Hoegaarden with proper fish and chips from the chippy is the best paring out there!!!
Agree Hoegaarden is far superior.
I enjoy both beers. But hoegaarden wins for me.

Seriously pal, u need to do a review on tht foreign guinness 🥴 wtf tastes like white lightening grrr wtf
No contest between these two for me, Blue Moon doesn't come close to Hoegarden
Hoegaarden is far superior imo. Blue Moon just doesn’t hit right.
I like Blue Moon but prefer big jugs 🤣🤣
Hoegaarden all day long.
Blue Moon is best in a Hefe glass
Sad times that Hoegaarden has glucose syrup in it! It need to change the date of when it was they first brewed with glucose
