Franziskaner really has stood the test of time in the UK. I remember back in the 1990s as a teenager too young for the pub, helping my mum doing the shopping in Safeway on Friday evening. My reward for this was a bottle of beer to have when we got in. The Franziskaner caught my attention as it looked different compared with the others on the shelf. I usually picked it, only occasionally opting for something else. I almost never drink at home now so rarely have it, but when I do I'm reminded it's still a good drink.
Had to come back to this video. After watching last week, I bought a bottle of the Franziskaner and it’s been in my fridge all week. Finally cracked it open. The hype is real. What a beer! Absolutely lovely. Could easily see off a few bottles of this. More shall have to be procured over the weekend!
Just tried Franziskaner for the first time today, never tried it because it was more expensive than the other cheaper beers. Had a rough day today and I thought what the hell, might as well give it a shot. And oh man I got to say, this is one of the nicest beers I've ever had. Definitely washed away my stress when that first sip hit. the taste, the gas, the smoothness really washed away the pain. 😂😂
You Sir must be decorated with a medal for your reviews. I ueed to go for peroni, san miguel, stella, etc. I never thought to try german beers and I can't belive that all this time I've missed out on such great beers. Enjoying a pint of Franziskaner as i type this comment, what a lovely beer! Ive tried paulaner, krombacher, Warsteiner, the 2 cheap beers from Asda brewes in france, they are all way better than any beers I had before. I've also tries the budvar and staropramen brewed in the check republic. I'm trying to get hole of Weihenstephaner but I can't find it anywhere around here so I'll probably order online.
I'm 67 and I've tried Erdinger and the Erdinger Dunkel as a result of this excellent channel. I can't drink the Erdinger, the banana/cloves thing upsets my stomach. I'm not criticizing the beer, but it clearly doesn't agree with me. I haven't tried the Franziskaner Weissbier, but I suspect I would have the same problem. I have to say, that the original description of Erdinger that you gave in a previous video was spot on. The banana/cloves thing is very strong for me. The Erdinger Dunkel is another matter. I can drink that no problem and it reminds me of UK pubs (Great Yarmouth in particular) in the early 1970's It was legal for a 14 year old to be in a pub (but not to drink alcohol). However I did have a drink of brown ale (loved it). The dunkel reminded me of that, along with the dart board and nicotine stained pub !
Erdinger is the Weissbier I buy if there are no other Weißbiers. It’s okay but nothing more. Agree that Fanziskaner is very good. I’m also lucky that I have a very good local bottle shop that always has at least 10 different German Weissbiers in stock - it’s fantastic!
Best I had was back 1990, in a small German Brew pub in a village called Vohenstrauss, northern Bavaria near the Czech border. Strong, full flavoured and really cheap. The old landlady would give you a "cuff" around the head if you left the lid up on your Bier Krug up and still had Weissbier in it, as it signified you wanted another.
They are both excellent choices and I purchase both but if Erdinger is available I grab it before franziskaner. There is something about it that keeps me coming back for more. It has this after taste that i love.
Weissbier 白啤 is hugely popular in China now. Most of the small convenience stores in the larger cities all stock various cans including Fransizkaner. Indeed Franziskaner is so popular there they started to brew it in Northern China around 2018. It looks and tastes the exact same but with slightly less raspy /good mouthfeel but you’d need to know your Munich brewed well to be able to differentiate. 🍺🍺😃
Ordered Franziskaner in our Tesco delivery and Erdinger came instead. Wholly agree with your assessments here. For me, no comparison between the two. Franziskaner is a great beer. It’s also fantastic on the PD.

I’ve got to say I haven’t tried them all yet. I’ve had erdinger, paullaner, franziskaner and I must say franziskaner is my favorite so far. Nice and chilled poured into a glass. It’s just goes down so nicely
I love them both, but the Weihenstephaner is my favourite weissbier and the Erdinger is my second favourite. The Franziskaner was my first ever German weissbier that I’ve tried and it still is my third favourite.
I was doing this exact comparison at the weekend! Franziskaner definitely better for me. More flavour. Edit... I made that comment before watching it all, and I see you have come to the same conclusion
I first had Franziskaner in Austria in 2012. There was a heatwave and it was pushing 100f. Sat outside like a mad dog Englishman supping away and it tasted amazing. Definitely one of my fave brews and wins every time over Erdinger; which I rate too.

Now you find everywhere same in Italy you find Scottish ale , bulldog beer ! Can’t find it in London had it in Windsor in 80s but in Italy the choices of beer is good .. love your programme 🎉🎉🎉
I lived in Germany for many years late 80's through the 90's and I loved Erdinger then. I tried one recently from Tesco on a whim and it is definitely not the same beer, interestingly I can say the same for Warstein (wobbly) as we knew it!
Lots of the big german breweries watered down their beer receipts, because the youth doesn't like strong beer. One exception is Oettinger (germanys lagest brewer), who are famous for their cheap beer. They even have their own cheap brand (5.0 Original) and brew lots of the supermarket beers (like for ALDI, Rewe and Penny). Also lots of the smaller breweries have better beer than the big companies.
Nice one .... its Franzikaner all the way for me! A really cool one of these on a hot day is great and at £1.65 (just gone up😢) from lidl's its sensational value and quality 😊👍🇬🇧
Maisels Weiße is the best Weißbier I have ever had, although just in terms of sheer accessibility I love Franziskaner the most because it’s available basically everywhere but still retains the absolute standard of what is expected from weizens. Erdinger falters at selling beer at such a massive volume which reduces the quality as a consequence. It’s not like I overly dislike Erdinger, I actually don’t mind drinking it, it’s just what is expected when production is expanded to such a degree. I think Erdinger is like tap 7 Schneider Weisse, you either like it or dislike it because it’s pretty different from your standard Hefeweizen.
I absolutely love weissbier...not many varieties in Vancouver bc but we have Erdinger. Pauliner, Konig Ludwig and Scneider and sons. Of those Konig Ludwig is my fave. Sadly No Krystaalweizen available here. Absolutely LOVED drinking those in Berlin when i was there last. BC is seemingly the craft beer capital of Canada, sadly that variety is not yet available here apparently.
Two great beers, some of the German breweries put the mass label engineered stuff to shame, these ones should have a separate shelf or something to differentiate them from the pigswill
1st night in Germany as an 18 year old sprog, the old sweats got me leathered in the squadron bar before taking me "down town" and feeding me Weissbier - I thought it was the best thing I ever tasted. 30 odd years later I brewed my own homage to a weissbier called White Horse for a reunion. Just venturing into wheat beer on your recommendation, I had my first Erdinger today in my local shop, all they had was that and the normal stuff like bud/ Stella etc. really enjoyed it, now I’m going to try more! It feels somewhere between an IPA and a lager which I really enjoy
I couldn`t agree more with your review. The Erdinger is a very unique style of Weissbier. It is very pale and has a unique taste. In comparison it is kinda watery. I can smell hints of citrus and some malty flavor. It is probably a good beer for a hot summer day in a beer garden or when you are hiking, but I personally prefer a richer Weissbier (with banana flavor) like the Franziskaner. My absolute favorites are Maisel's Weisse from Bayreuth and Schneider Weisse from Munich. Like the Erdinger they use the bayerische Edelreifung which is a second fermentation in the bottle. They add some fresh wort and yeast to the beer before they bottle it and store it for another month or so before they ship it. Thats why the Erdinger has that small label on the bottle.
My frankly dull claim to fame is that the owner of the Erdinger brewery , Werner Brombach, asked to join my table at Oktoberfest Dublin after he'd completed the opening tapping ceremony. Affable guy, never bought me a drink though 😡.
Spot on, picked this one all the time for this style, never disappointed all the years I have been drinking this, definitely one of the best in the style and most reasonable priced here in the states
Great thing about Erdinger is they do both a filtered (clear) version and a dark (dunkel). My no 1 choice however would always be Hoegaarden, with a slice of lemon which contrasts with the orange zest it is made from. It’s even better on draught which a few select places still do, Plough in Harbourne and Camelot Castle to name two.
@@bizzclub8622 The Hoegaarden website claim it is the original Belgium Wheatbeer dating back to the 16th Century. @@gbphil Belgian wheat beer is not the same as German wheat beer (weizenbier or weissbier, however you choose to call it.) The Belgians use unmalted wheat instead of the malted wheat used in Germany.
They are currently 4 for £6.50 in my local Tesco. I always get 4, and it's 3x Franziskaner + 1x Erdinger. Erdinger is not a bad beer but it's not on the same level as Franziskaner.
I spent one Christmas somewhere around 2015 spending £100 on weissbiers from one of the big internet shopping firms (beers of the world?) I choose about 30 of the cheaper ones out of the 60 or so they stocked and had a happy fortnight sampling all of them. Very few stand outs above and beyond Erdinger and certainly not worth paying double the price for but suffered with a smile doing it.
Have you ever done the Brugs Witbier? I love the corriander in that, very refreshing and one of my favourites. Might try this Franziskaner Weissbier though, you make it sound interesting.
Once readily available in Tesco, Weihenstephan weissbier was a form favourite of mine. Only ever seen it on speciality bottle shops for the past ten years..
For me it goes: Erdinger -6/10. Started off on these but there are much better ones I found. Franziskaner - 8/10 Weihenstephaner - 9/10 Weihenstephaner Vitus 10/10. Sadly going for over £4 a bottle and sold out at beers of Europe.
Depends I do like the typical banana and clove flavours you find with most Weiss beers. Erdinger is a bit different to the others I have tried and actually prefer it. I Find it's a bit like a lager you pull it out of fridge might not be so complex but really refreshing and easy to drink whilst still being tasty.
Franzinskaner is my fav . And as you say it's definitely got a peppery taste which might put a few people of initially . Took me a couple of bottles to get use to it when i first tried it all those years ago .
Another for the Summer months? Maybe see if you can get hold of some "Dunkelweizen"? Think the Orange slice might be an American thing? When we go on our beer tours down to the south of Germany it tends to be a slice of lemon as an option.
Hello I’ve just recently stumbled upon your channel and today I was in Sainsburys and found a nice four pack of Erdinger’s I assumed they were 500ml and have just seen they’re 330ml! Anyways, I know you’ve done a review of Patronus but I was wondering if you could do a comparison between Erdinger and Patronus in terms of price and taste. I’ve tried them both but feel I may have been scammed thinking a 4 pack of 330ml Erdingers for £4.75 is a better deal than just getting 3 bottles of Patronus
also I love these beers. they are relatively inexpensive and found everywhere, and its just such a good quality of beer, one would think it would be more exclusive
Obviously two great beers. Myself, I find that I can "like" a beer more on one day, and then the next batch, it wasn't that great. Maybe could be several variables? Temperature of beer, being shipped and stored to the USA, tastebuds alter on various days, food pairings, etc, etc. I'd like to see you put Vitus up against a similar one...maybe Schneider Weisse or equal.
I missed this video when it came out. I prefer Franziskaner - more body and flavour for sure - though I have some Erdinger in my cupboard right now as Tesco only had that brand. Both are good in their own way. Quite different from the Belgian and Dutch witbiers. Love weissbier in the summer with a slice of lemon something I got from my German cousins.
For me I tried both, plus Paulaner, without doubt Paulaner is the best for me, Franziskaner def has more body and flavour, to me Erdinger has a lighter taste to it, Paulaner just hits the spot for me🙂, Si get yourself to Majestic Wines, there's one in Cardiff I think, you can get a case of Paulaner (12) for £21.60,cheaper than the supermarkets 👍🍺
Totally agree with the review. Erdinger - Drinkable but no magic to it, focused more on marketing than quality me thinks. Same for the Dunkel Franziskaner - Very solid, best supermarket option for the style most of the time
Great reviw and I've flet the same way - Edringer, though good, isn't in the same flavor profile of of the other Munich varities. You will get no clove, baanna and those classic tasts but it is a nice refershing sip

I bought a pack of Erdinger at the weekend seeing as they are on offer with your clubcard at Tesco and I have to agree with you. I was slightly disappointed with the taste I found it a bit bland compared to other wheat beers I have had in the past.
Interesting. Are you sure they aren't just an importer? In Sweden we get the real German version but it's still quite bland compared to Franziskaner, Paulaner etc. It's not a bad beer by any means but I'd only get it if no other weissbier were available.
Good ole banana beer as we called it in the Army in Germany. Weizen Hefe or Klar was always a nice drop. I’m a Franco boy myself, alway ended up with a good night.
Ain't watched yet. But I absolutely and most definitely prefer the erdinger dunkel Weiss to either of these, but it's often not great from the bottle, or can be kinda 50 / 50 . From the tap it's amazing, but you'll need a mortgage if you can find it
Also Erdinger is a Wheat beer lol read the back of the bottle simon i think you will find it says wheat barley and hops At least thats what the Tesco one said on it lol
Agree, Erdington is a bit bland for me. In my opinion, Andechs make the best Weissbier. Weihenstephan also make a belter. For UK beer Geipel in North Wales do a great Weiss
You can't find Paulaner in the UK? I have one at my corner gas station in Texas, haha. I have much more trouble finding the others, but Franziskaner is the other more readily available. It's a shame because as much as Paulaner is my go-to due to cost and availability (and not owned by Bud), it's one of my least favorite in the weiss category. I only get it because it's a German weiss and I can find it everywhere here, I even found it on tap in a pizza shop once. For me, both Franziskaner and Paulaner are very "phenolic" and I read a metallic taste. I still like them both a lot.
I dont like Franziskaner it has a candle wax smell to it i cant stomach , I like Erdinger and also yesterday tried Staropramen beer for first time and that is quite good though was dissapointed its brewed in the UK and not the Czech republic but for £2.20p it is good.

The Belgians use unmalted wheat instead of the malted wheat used in Germany.
@@heywoodjablome5630 who gives a fcuk, it’s still my favourite.
@@gbphil haha, good response.
I’ve had and enjoyed them both… If you tour around Singapore all day in the tropical heat a wise beer goes down well.
They are currently 4 for £6.50 in my local Tesco. I always get 4, and it's 3x Franziskaner + 1x Erdinger. Erdinger is not a bad beer but it's not on the same level as Franziskaner.
Agree find erdinger a bit bland ,Paulaner weissbier on the sub is tremendous 👍👍
I spent one Christmas somewhere around 2015 spending £100 on weissbiers from one of the big internet shopping firms (beers of the world?) I choose about 30 of the cheaper ones out of the 60 or so they stocked and had a happy fortnight sampling all of them. Very few stand outs above and beyond Erdinger and certainly not worth paying double the price for but suffered with a smile doing it.
Have you ever done the Brugs Witbier? I love the corriander in that, very refreshing and one of my favourites. Might try this Franziskaner Weissbier though, you make it sound interesting.
just back from lidl and got a bottle of that franziskaner beer looks great going to let it cool in the fridge for a while
Once readily available in Tesco, Weihenstephan weissbier was a form favourite of mine. Only ever seen it on speciality bottle shops for the past ten years..
Sold widely in sainsburys
For me it goes:
Erdinger -6/10. Started off on these but there are much better ones I found.
Franziskaner - 8/10
Weihenstephaner - 9/10
Weihenstephaner Vitus 10/10.
Sat in my garden now drinking a bottle of Franziskaner. Tastes great, but a little too carbonated for me. Cheers all 🍻
Another for the Summer months? Maybe see if you can get hold of some "Dunkelweizen"?
Think the Orange slice might be an American thing? When we go on our beer tours down to the south of Germany it tends to be a slice of lemon as an option.
Franziskaner used to be 5.2% ABV about a decade ago
Hello I’ve just recently stumbled upon your channel and today I was in Sainsburys and found a nice four pack of Erdinger’s I assumed they were 500ml and have just seen they’re 330ml! Anyways, I know you’ve done a review of Patronus but I was wondering if you could do a comparison between Erdinger and Patronus in terms of price and taste. I’ve tried them both but feel I may have been scammed thinking a 4 pack of 330ml Erdingers for £4.75 is a better deal than just getting 3 bottles of Patronus
Great idea on the video thank you, Pateonus is a far superior beer to Erdinger I feel
also I love these beers. they are relatively inexpensive and found everywhere, and its just such a good quality of beer, one would think it would be more exclusive
Why don't you make comparison between Franziskaner and paulaner
Agree, out of the two the frankie is the best, texture, mouthfeel, taste….everything
Orange in a Blue Moon! Nooooo it’s made with Orange zest already! It has to be a Lemon slice to draw out the contrasting flavours.
Tucher Beer from Nürnberg is great too
Obviously two great beers.
Vitus is not a Weissbier. It's a Starkbier (strong beer)version of Weissbier, a Weizenbock.
The alcohol level is too high to be otherwise.
The Weihnstephaner Dopplweizen is THE BEST. Unfortunately, it is rare in Texas.
Köstritzer Dark Beer is amazing
Great beer
Erdinger is fine, but Franziskaner is one of my favourites. Used to be able to get it at my local Tesco express 3 for a fiver.
my local Sainsburys sells Wiehenstephaner weissbier but iv'e not seen Paulaner yet
Which one is the Aldi one most like?
Paulaner is the best I have tried but my M+S only stock their Munich Helles lager. Franzy is by far and away my go to beer PERIOD 👌
Majestic wine are doing 12 bottles of Paulaner for £21.60 which works out to £1.80 a bottle
Same for the Dunkel
Franziskaner - Very solid, best supermarket option for the style most of the time
Great reviw and I've flet the same way - Edringer, though good, isn't in the same flavor profile of of the other Munich varities. You will get no clove, baanna and those classic tasts but it is a nice refershing sip
Great Beer Reviews - I have always been a 'Beer Man' !!! But, l have one confession - have taken up drinking French Beer - there are so many to chose from !!! Not surprising though - l live in France in the South East, near Perpignan. Are you familiar with French Beers - would you consider doing a In-Depth Review sometime ?
Greetings from beautiful Blieskastel, Saarland/Germany. Just found your channel. Uts awesome. Keep doing the good xontent. Congrats❤
I bought a pack of Erdinger at the weekend seeing as they are on offer with your clubcard at Tesco and I have to agree with you. I was slightly disappointed with the taste I found it a bit bland compared to other wheat beers I have had in the past.
It looks like the UK Erdinger is brewed by Carlsberg Marstons, would be interesting to compare it to the real German version
Interesting. Are you sure they aren't just an importer? In Sweden we get the real German version but it's still quite bland compared to Franziskaner, Paulaner etc. It's not a bad beer by any means but I'd only get it if no other weissbier were available.
Great vid Simon and I agree with you Franziskaner is the better beer 👍
Well for weis beer they are kinda dark. Looks more like hazy amber.
But they look both very tasty.😊
You can get Paulaner 21 quid for 12 in Majestic wine. decent deal.
Good ole banana beer as we called it in the Army in Germany. Weizen Hefe or Klar was always a nice drop. I’m a Franco boy myself, alway ended up with a good night.
You’re taking pride in your appearance lately Simon
Ain't watched yet. But I absolutely and most definitely prefer the erdinger dunkel Weiss to either of these, but it's often not great from the bottle, or can be kinda 50 / 50 . From the tap it's amazing, but you'll need a mortgage if you can find it
Erdinger: the chicken korma of weissbiers.
I will add however that erdinger "urweisse" is delicious if you can find a bottle.
Also Erdinger is a Wheat beer lol read the back of the bottle simon i think you will find it says wheat barley and hops At least thats what the Tesco one said on it lol
100% agree tried both from Tesco and don't really 'get' Erdinger, it isn't even close.🙂
Agree, Erdington is a bit bland for me. In my opinion, Andechs make the best Weissbier. Weihenstephan also make a belter. For UK beer Geipel in North Wales do a great Weiss
Schneider, for the win.
All the Weissbier flavours, plus one or two extra. Slightly darker colour and Munich malt character.
Excellent review
Trust me on this one, wet the glasses before you pour ;)
Nikel brau weisse beer is my go to and favourite
You should try a Bayreuther Aktien Zwick‘l Kellerbier i think you‘l love it.
Great video,You have a wonderful nose and pallete for good beer and ale keep on keeping on.cheers Neil
It would be good to see a comparison tasting but doing it blind
Are there any bad German beers
I like this battles.
The banana aroma put me off for a while.... I do drink it now
And I just bought Paulaner and this video was released…😂
I recommend Mönchshof Wheat Beer 🍺 it’s delicious
I dont like Franziskaner it has a candle wax smell to it i cant stomach , I like Erdinger and also yesterday tried Staropramen beer for first time and that is quite good though was dissapointed its brewed in the UK and not the Czech republic but for £2.20p it is good.
Tbh I like the German hefeweizen all don't have really a favourite tbh . I think these beers in general are my favourite
When was the last time you had Blue Moon, Si?
That's another formerly decent drop which is now undrinkable 🤦🏼♀️
