There are certainly people that could answer this better than me, but Dash is built off Bitcoin code, and layers in a CoinJoin mixing through master nodes for dark sends, which is not how money is sent by default in Dash. Monero strives for privacy on every send, and uses somewhat utilizes lower level techniques (Ring Signatures + Stealth Addresses) built into every transaction. I think there's an argument to be made that Monero is more private, especially if there aren't enough Dash Master Nodes, or some of them are compromised, but I don't have any hard evidence. Dash excels in several other ways, like having a built-in development funding mechanism (amanda and evan used those funds to come to Atlanta), and a fast send, which I'm not sure about with Monero.
+CuriousInventor I've concluded that Monero will become the stealth currency, as cryptic as possible, with privacy as it's main goal and selling point; Dash is also cryptic, but has decided to shift away from the 'Darkcoin' image for more populist set of goals - simplicity of use, and worldwide adoption for mundane transactions; if this is the case both currencies should do really well imho.
Dash was instamined and it is extremely likely that a few creators control most of the coins and the master node arrangement guarantees that this imbalance only grows as they collect most of the fees as well. Monero's creator was similarly corrupt the the community of developers quickly caught and repaired the unfair advantage in the codebase crippling mining for everyone and was eventually driven out of the community. Dash is centralized andbasically boils down to proof of authority where a few people control most master nodes, and Monero much less so showing promise as being picked up by some darknet sites. Monero has really interesting privacy technology but has huge problems with scaling with ring signatures. I would suggest avoiding both alts as better privacy features will likely be incorporated within bitcoin (CT, coinshuffle) and other will be added as a sidechain (mibble wimble)
Wish I had some VR goggles right now to try this out more fully.
