    I would have loved one of these to play with in high school mechanics...just to smoke the shop out.... everyone seemed to have a competition of seeing who could smoke that entire wing of the school out, with this, I'd definatley have won lol

    This is Portland and Western Railroad (PNWR) EMD SD40-3 # 3053 at the PNWR Squarehouse locomotive shop in Albany, Oregon, USA! It still has it's fully functional 20 cylinder EMD 645E3C prime mover!

    According to some of the comments the poor old girl just exploded and took half the state down with smog BUT when it gets buttoned up with the turbo turning all will be right with the world again. Some folks just don't get it.

  • @modeltrainproductions3167

    It sounds like an older locomotive like an alco. Not normal for the exhaust to come out the sides but hey good thing it was at the shop that day. Much needed work to be done.

    • @mrmoderator5678
      @mrmoderator5678 6 років тому +1

      they had disconected the turbos on the exhaust side so the engine was not getting the required amount of air and was running like crap. also thats why the smoke was blowing out the doors i suspect they may have attempted to reroute the exhausts around the turbos to stop most of the smoke building up in the engine bay but i dont think it worked well

    • @dinodgr
      @dinodgr  4 роки тому +3

      The turbo was closed off to keep dirt and soot from the exhaust stacks from getting into the turbo.

    Looks and sounds like they started it sans turbo, after sitting that long to just blow any crap out of it, without damaging the turbo and thermatic clutch.... common practice. It also "sounds like" there's an open test cock on one of the cylinders.... it's definitely Not the sound of just the open exhaust manifold. By the way, is.. or was, this unit one G&W's ?? I thought they bought a few of the SD 45's from MRL (Montana Rail Link) who, back in the 90's and into the early/mid 2000's had the largest fleet of SD 45's in the country. Thanks for the video... good post.

    OMG, the only thing worse I have ever seen is when I poured 90-weight oil down the spark plug holes in my old Volvo for a compression check, and then immediately drove it. But, I am a train watcher. Main line Illinois Central, 54 St., Chicago, City of New Orleans, Panama Limited, South Shore electric with the orange cars. The UP and BNSF main lines through Merced County. Used to sit in the Marysville, WA BK right by the tracks and watch the oil and coal trains go by hoping to win the ghetto lottery. Now, the main line through Madera, CA. Quite a train life. I was literally, not figuratively or metaphorically, literally, part of the scenery of the City of New Orleans. We were the kids playing pickup slow pitch in the tenement back yard. "Don't you know me, I'm your native son, I'm the train they call the City of New Orleans, I'll be 500 miles 'fore the day is done." The Iron Horse, the great iron artery of all of our lives, whether we know it or not.
    Kudos to William Least Heat Moon (Blue Highways). I'm reading his book right now, and I don't I could spin out this yarn if I wasn't.

    • @anonymike8280
      @anonymike8280 7 років тому +1

      Did you get the riff about the "ghetto" lottery. I think you mean Merced. I'm in Madera right now. Great little town. The only thing it lacks is an Applebees and a Costco. A lot of the big chains don't bother with us because we are so close to Fresno.

    • @mrmoderator5678

    I love the rumble these EMD's have when you start them up or are running them around Notch 3-4. Was it down for a scheduled rebuild or did it suffer a catastrophic failure? How bad was the damage? Don't see much G&W power where i'm at. The only ones I've seen at all were at the DGNO yard in Carrollton Tx a few years back.
    Thanks for the upload and good job putting her back together. She's what an SD45?

      The color scheme looks like a Portland and Western. Look at videos of the Toledo Hauler and the scheme looks the same. The Portland and Western runs a number of short lines in Oregon and runs some old BNSF trackage down the Willamette valley.

    • @clarencegrady8003
      @clarencegrady8003 7 років тому +4

      If you search for PNWR Harbor Turn, you can see the 3053 at work. The PNWR is about the best short line operator for maintenance of both trackage and power units. Their Albany OR yard does it all on the power units.
