Wowster the guy lived off campus with teammates and pretty much only had other players come over to hang out. Home game weekends he would go back to his parents house with a teammate or two to relax in the hot tub. Definitely didn't stay for the chicks and parties
Arca Jeth Zac clearly said this was his opinion and all this was based off of his gut feeling. He wasn’t trying to pass anything as what he said off as fact. As far as QB’s I trust Zac’s opinion and have the same questions about Herbert. He’s a incredible talent but NFL QB requires a different kind of pressure and dedication. We won’t know until we actually see him take NFL snaps but from watching his film and highlights I say the criticism is fair.
This is one of the worst takes in recent memory. You'll regret this one man. As someone who watched pac-12 football religiously (not because it's great but because it's home), I can honestly say Herbert is a baller, a competitor, and nothing means more to him than football. Watch the rose bowl again, watch his pre and post game interviews, then try and say he "doesn't love football".

He is usually quite on point with his football analysis, and one good game from Herbert in a losing effort does not mean he is wrong, either. That said, it looks like Herbert is taking his coaching to heart based upon his performance last week.

No idea where the ball is going. I honestly don't think he made any significant improvements from 2018 to 2019. Just different playcalling to hide his deficiencies.
jesot the coaching almost never had him throw the ball farther than 10 yards. It was mostly screens and play action. There where about 3 deep passes all year, and I think he completed all of them.

The difference between Herbert and Kawhi Leonard is that Kawhi has infinitely more skill and versatility within his sport than Herbert has. Herbert has a canon, but struggles with accuracy and has no touch on his throws. If Herbert is a bust, it won’t be because he lacks heart, it’s because he’s really not that good of a quarterback.

He also had the highest rate of screen passes out of every QB in this draft class (yes, even over Tua). Watch his tape. Just because he has a canon for an arm doesn’t mean he’s Favre. Accuracy isn’t just about completion percentage, especially when you throw more screens than any other QB and you have one of the best o-line’s in college football going against Pac-12 defenses. It’s also about his ability to throw timed passes with touch and to throw into tight windows/tight coverage. And he doesn’t do that well.

As a Colts fan I think the comparison might be apt. Always felt like Luck gave football all he had when he was playing, but unlike most NFL players, playing in the NFL wasn't the only thing he wanted to do. If Herbert has a lot of other interests you always have to worry about him retiring early. He has other stuff he wants to do and the millions to do it with.

I agree with you. I just watched the doc on Tom Brady versus the other six quarterbacks picked ahead of him in his draft class. Herbert doesn’t show a fraction of the fire and passion of a Brady, or a Joe Burrow. He probably will follow in the footsteps of his idol Joey Harrington, a flash in the pan.

Watch the videos. It's all screen passes. When he throws downfield, it's the same story as last year. Just all over the place. Still good for the occasional great throw, but he's incredibly erratic.
You are completely off base on the passion aspect. Justin has admitted in interviews that sometimes he gets so jacked up for a game that he struggles early on because his adrenaline is jacked and he can't control how hard he throws the ball. That's not something that happens to someone that doesn't love football. He's just not the type of guy to express his emotions demonstrably, but you can still see flashes in the way he celebrates with his teammates. I think his lackluster play is a factor of the fact Mario Cristobal isn't that invested in focusing on quarterbacks. That's a flaw he needs to overcome eventually. He just doesn't run the type of offense that features the quarterback that much, which isn't good when you have a talent like Herbert. You notice the more he's allowed Arroyo to open up the playbook, the better Justin has looked. His play is a result of having his skills handcuffed, not a lack of passion. I'd point to the first five games of his sophomore year as proof of this. Under a coach that was committed to utilising his full skills, he was lighting it up. Then Cristobal came in and he is very conservative in how he wants the game played.

Of all the guys you named only Brady, Montana, and Manning went to schools that had the history of winning championships and Montana did win it. Herbert is at Oregon which has Nike invested in it to win and yet he could only manages to win one Pac-12 championship in a down year where Utah was the second best team. He isn't the winner you think he is a on team with more talent than most of the conference. A winner elevates their teams all the QB's you listed elevated their teams in college. He came back this season and did what win a depressed conferences loose to a freshman QB and when they were on the inside track to the playoff loose to a 7-5 ASU. He was drafted in the 1st round. Peyton Manning despite being projected a top went back his senior year and went 11-1 winning many awards. He was drafted 1st. Tom Brady was 20-5 as a starter at Michigan. He was drafted in the 6th round because physically wasn't impressive and sat a year. Drew Brees led Purdue to its first Rose Bowl in 34 years also won numerous awards. Drafted in the 1st round Aaron Rodgers led Cal to a 10-1 season and was ranked 4th in the polls. He was drafted in the 1st round. Roethlisberger set all types of records at Miami (OH) and senior year led them to be ranked 10 in the AP poll. 1st round pick. Terry Bradshaw went to La Tech and tore it up there going 17-4 in two season he was phenomenal there despite it being La Tech. Drafted 1st.

I respect your opinion, but I strongly disagree. While Joe Burrow looks like he’s more passionate about football, you gotta give Herbert a lot of credit for coming back for his Senior year to continue to get better. If that’s not commitment, then I don’t know what is. Herbert didn’t have to tell everyone that he’s improved or that he’s passionate about football. He showed it. Along with his great size and arm strength, his accuracy is much better and his release is incredible. In my opinion, he’s the best player in college football this year that nobody talks about.
Aight Joe burrow and Justin Herbert are vastly different characters. And they have vastly different personalities. Herbert loves football. Burrow loves football. Just because Herbert isn’t as vocal as burrow doesn’t mean he’s a bad qb or doesn’t love football. And if you look at burrows junior season it is very similar as herberts. But in burrows senior season he got an excellent offensive coordinator and Herbert was left in a very different offense with a very bland offensive coordinator. And to an external observer that may look like Herbert doesn’t love football like joe burrow does, but what it really is, is that they are different people, who play the position differently, who present themselves differently. And it’s okay to be like Herbert or like burrow. But people wouldn’t be saying that burrow is the same player he is and has the same love for that game if he didn’t have his senior year offensive coordinator. Herbert is a great qb. And I speculate he will do great in the NFL.

Joe burrow is one of the best college players we have seen in a long time. I feel like we are somehow expecting Herbert to match him and when he doesn’t we take away a ton of credit.
Im sure Justin loves football. But maybe not as much as others. I think he has gotten better every year. Better footwork, better at looking off the defense. Better progression. Also im pretty sure je lifts with the lineman. He has put on 20+ pounds of muscle over the years. Everyone said the same thing about Marcus being quite. But Marcus is a fierce competitor. No it's called scouting, you don't need to be a coach to scout as long as you have a wealth of information to fall back on. Herbert has not improved his approach to playing QB, foot work, arm mechanics, he's not elusive with the little speed he has, the little ball flip he does is an accident waiting to happen, he has certain things you like but he's not consistent enough to be top 10 in the draft unless you're willing to develop him for 2-3 years. A NFL pass rush would eat him alive DL men knock down passes, guys like Aaron Donald, Von Miller Khalil Mack, Jamie Collins will be sacking you in literally 1 or 3 seconds, safety's disguise thier intentions, etc etc. Some people watch one team some people follow everything that's happening around the league with every obscure player.
ProDay is also questionable because of the lack of game speed but you simulate that by having a fast intense game plan showing you can adjust on fly and be consistent if you have question marks.

Zac breaks down film pretty well imo and actually takes the time to evaluate a player as opposed to other talk shows that just use empty opinions to create a narrative. He also clearly stated this was his felling and his opinion and you would probably not agree. I think someone needs to take time to listen and not get butt hurt about some fair criticism.
Herbert is an Oregonian. We are not boastful or loud people. He loves his hometown which is why he stayed for his senior year. The kid took very challenging advanced science college courses and earned an above 4.0 GPA and received the William V. Campbell Trophy. For folks who don't know what that is, its called the "Academic Heisman." He is both a supreme athlete and true scholar. His disposition is quiet but mature beyond his years. I would rather have someone who acts like Montana or Brady than Mayfield or Manziel.
I hope you saw the emotion he displayed in the Rose Bowl and now realize that this take is wrong. Maybe watch the interviews of Herbert where he’s reduced to tears when talking about his time at Oregon. He’s introverted for sure, but just because he isn’t a real vocal guy doesn’t mean he doesn’t love football. Also, give Herbert the same supporting cast as Burrow and he’d put up just as glamorous of stats.
As a life long Ducks fan and an Oregon alum, I think you are correct with your gut feeling, but with a caveat-- Justin just fulfilled his dream-- winning the Rose Bowl as an Oregon QB. Consider that he grew up 2 miles from Autzen Stadium and that his family has strong ties to Oregon football. His entire heart commitment was to Oregon football, but not football in a universal sense. I don't think he has a lot of passion to play professional football. He has other aspirations, as demonstrated by being a 4.0 GPA student.
Going to pause and give my thoughts before hearing yours. I am a Ducks fan. In my opinion he was a good QB but not a great QB. His numbers came at large against inferior opponents. I think you're misunderstanding the eye test. The eye test is looking at their size and arm strength. Herbert passes the eye test. Accuracy and personality is looking at the intangibles.

Herbert’s problem isn’t that he’s lacking passion. He, as well, has great physical traits. Herbert’s problem is that he struggles with touch, accuracy, and mechanics. It doesn’t matter that Herbert is an introvert, the reason Tua and Burrow are so much better than Justin Herbert is because of how accurate, poised, and polished their games are. Herbert’s got a ton of heart, size, and throwing power, but that’s not enough to justify picking him over someone like Burrow or Tua.
I think sometimes young QB's with extraordinary skills (big arm) dont celebrate much because they haven't experienced total domination with 1st ed receivers on a regular basis. Put Herbert in at LSU QB and you will get same or better performance.
Justin Herbert is not a pool animator , not a motivator kind of guy . I dont give a fuck if he Is introvert or extrovert , I just care that he actually reads defenses, hit receivers throw TDs, avoid interceptions and wins games. He Is more than capable to do all that in the next level. Everything else doesnt matter at all.
When watching Herbert, I can definitely say that i would hope for him to make a bigger jump from last year to this year. Still has problems handling pressure, can be very inconsistent, and stares down receivers. This may be a bit nit picky but his dropback under center can sometimes be a little awkward but that's just me. I can say that he has really nice NFL throw power and can put the ball in a good spot. His throw on the run is impressive and can deliver. That being said, he should be good with play action. If i was an organization, I would take him late in the first round because of his ceiling but I definitely would put him behind a veteran his rookie year if possible. I feel like i may be one of the few that think as of now 12/24/19, he'd be better than Tua. That is mostly based on the injury concern. Tua has less arm strength and having a hip injury hampers his ability to get more velocity on the ball. But Tua is easily the smarter quarterback between the two. The reason I feel he has such a high ceiling is his height and athleticism along with his arm power and accuracy. His weaknesses are very apparent. He needs to get better at his pocket presence by knowing when to throw it out or take a sack for example, when to run, inconsistency, and the general quarterback intangibles like not staring his receivers down. Something like that. The other week Seattle radio had an interview with Russ Wilson's brain coach, all about his relentless positive attitude. In the Arizona State game you could see that Herbert was down and couldn't pick up the team. Maybe its not like/love But positive/negative attitude. That ability to accept that your behind X points but to percerver knowing that you're the better team and will win.
Look at what Wilson did to get the starting job in seattle to start with. Came in and out-worked the guy they just paid to take the job. 100% loves the game, always tinkering, working on his stuff, working out what works best with his receivers, working with the O-coordinator, just doing all of it.
Passion for football and a passion for winning is two different things. I get what you are saying. Passionate about winning require a relentless will to get better and be better. It’s an obsession. Most people do not have it. I don’t think Herbert has it either.

Daily Dad yes I meant his play plateaued. Part due to his lack of physical skills the previous poster mentioned by also because I never felt Rosen put football first.
My concerns with him came about last year when he chose to stay in school. It was not the decision to stay in school that bothered me, I actually admire it when done for the right reason. My concern was that he seemed oftly worried about what team would draft them because he didnt want to go to certain places for all the wrong reasons. There were reports that he was concerned about things like lifestyle, weather, and east coast city life(because teams like the Skins and Giants were interested.) I could understand if he was worried about an organization with a bad track record, but that isnt what reports were saying. They were saying that he was concerned with "lifestyle" and that he liked his west coast "lifestyle." I also think he is going to be lower rated in this class,than he was in last year's class where the early reports were that the Skins, Broncos and especially the Giants were interested. Last year I think he is a top 10 maybe even a top 5 pick. As it stands, he needs a good offseason to have a shot at that now.

Arca Jeth Zac clearly said this was his opinion and all this was based off of his gut feeling. He wasn’t trying to pass anything as what he said off as fact. As far as QB’s I trust Zac’s opinion and have the same questions about Herbert. He’s a incredible talent but NFL QB requires a different kind of pressure and dedication. We won’t know until we actually see him take NFL snaps but from watching his film and highlights I say the criticism is fair.
This is one of the worst takes in recent memory. You'll regret this one man. As someone who watched pac-12 football religiously (not because it's great but because it's home), I can honestly say Herbert is a baller, a competitor, and nothing means more to him than football. Watch the rose bowl again, watch his pre and post game interviews, then try and say he "doesn't love football".

He also had the highest rate of screen passes out of every QB in this draft class (yes, even over Tua). Watch his tape. Just because he has a canon for an arm doesn’t mean he’s Favre. Accuracy isn’t just about completion percentage, especially when you throw more screens than any other QB and you have one of the best o-line’s in college football going against Pac-12 defenses. It’s also about his ability to throw timed passes with touch and to throw into tight windows/tight coverage. And he doesn’t do that well.

As a Colts fan I think the comparison might be apt. Always felt like Luck gave football all he had when he was playing, but unlike most NFL players, playing in the NFL wasn't the only thing he wanted to do. If Herbert has a lot of other interests you always have to worry about him retiring early. He has other stuff he wants to do and the millions to do it with.

You are completely off base on the passion aspect. Justin has admitted in interviews that sometimes he gets so jacked up for a game that he struggles early on because his adrenaline is jacked and he can't control how hard he throws the ball. That's not something that happens to someone that doesn't love football. He's just not the type of guy to express his emotions demonstrably, but you can still see flashes in the way he celebrates with his teammates.
I think his lackluster play is a factor of the fact Mario Cristobal isn't that invested in focusing on quarterbacks. That's a flaw he needs to overcome eventually. He just doesn't run the type of offense that features the quarterback that much, which isn't good when you have a talent like Herbert. You notice the more he's allowed Arroyo to open up the playbook, the better Justin has looked. His play is a result of having his skills handcuffed, not a lack of passion. I'd point to the first five games of his sophomore year as proof of this. Under a coach that was committed to utilising his full skills, he was lighting it up. Then Cristobal came in and he is very conservative in how he wants the game played.
He's also not the type of guy be a winner this season was supposed to be victory lap. He lost to Bo Nix in Nix's first college game of college.

Of all the guys you named only Brady, Montana, and Manning went to schools that had the history of winning championships and Montana did win it. Herbert is at Oregon which has Nike invested in it to win and yet he could only manages to win one Pac-12 championship in a down year where Utah was the second best team. He isn't the winner you think he is a on team with more talent than most of the conference. A winner elevates their teams all the QB's you listed elevated their teams in college. He came back this season and did what win a depressed conferences loose to a freshman QB and when they were on the inside track to the playoff loose to a 7-5 ASU. Oregon probably would've won the conference with the backup and beat Auburn so at best he had a net zero impact.

John Elway played at Stanford at a time they didn't emphasize football despite not having a winning season still is in the college football hall of fame and was PAC 10 player of the year twice also while playing baseball at Stanford and was draft number 1 in the NFL and second round in the MLB
Dan Marino went 11-1 at Pitt for 3 years you know that blue blood Pitt. He was drafted in the 1st round.
Peyton Manning despite being projected a top went back his senior year and went 11-1 winning many awards. He was drafted 1st.
Tom Brady was 20-5 as a starter at Michigan. He was drafted in the 6th round because physically wasn't impressive and sat a year.
Drew Brees led Purdue to its first Rose Bowl in 34 years also won numerous awards. Drafted in the 1st round
Aaron Rodgers led Cal to a 10-1 season and was ranked 4th in the polls. He was drafted in the 1st round.
Roethlisberger set all types of records at Miami (OH) and senior year led them to be ranked 10 in the AP poll. 1st round pick.
Terry Bradshaw went to La Tech and tore it up there going 17-4 in two season he was phenomenal there despite it being La Tech. Drafted 1st.
Herbert is more of a Daniel Jones, than a Baker mayfield. That's my opinion.

I respect your opinion, but I strongly disagree. While Joe Burrow looks like he’s more passionate about football, you gotta give Herbert a lot of credit for coming back for his Senior year to continue to get better. If that’s not commitment, then I don’t know what is. Herbert didn’t have to tell everyone that he’s improved or that he’s passionate about football. He showed it. Along with his great size and arm strength, his accuracy is much better and his release is incredible. In my opinion, he’s the best player in college football this year that nobody talks about.
Aight Joe burrow and Justin Herbert are vastly different characters. And they have vastly different personalities. Herbert loves football. Burrow loves football. Just because Herbert isn’t as vocal as burrow doesn’t mean he’s a bad qb or doesn’t love football. And if you look at burrows junior season it is very similar as herberts. But in burrows senior season he got an excellent offensive coordinator and Herbert was left in a very different offense with a very bland offensive coordinator. And to an external observer that may look like Herbert doesn’t love football like joe burrow does, but what it really is, is that they are different people, who play the position differently, who present themselves differently. And it’s okay to be like Herbert or like burrow. But people wouldn’t be saying that burrow is the same player he is and has the same love for that game if he didn’t have his senior year offensive coordinator. Herbert is a great qb. And I speculate he will do great in the NFL.

No it's called scouting, you don't need to be a coach to scout as long as you have a wealth of information to fall back on. Herbert has not improved his approach to playing QB, foot work, arm mechanics, he's not elusive with the little speed he has, the little ball flip he does is an accident waiting to happen, he has certain things you like but he's not consistent enough to be top 10 in the draft unless you're willing to develop him for 2-3 years. A NFL pass rush would eat him alive DL men knock down passes, guys like Aaron Donald, Von Miller Khalil Mack, Jamie Collins will be sacking you in literally 1 or 3 seconds, safety's disguise thier intentions, etc etc. Some people watch one team some people follow everything that's happening around the league with every obscure player.
ProDay is also questionable because of the lack of game speed but you simulate that by having a fast intense game plan showing you can adjust on fly and be consistent if you have question marks.

Zac breaks down film pretty well imo and actually takes the time to evaluate a player as opposed to other talk shows that just use empty opinions to create a narrative. He also clearly stated this was his felling and his opinion and you would probably not agree. I think someone needs to take time to listen and not get butt hurt about some fair criticism.

Herbert is an Oregonian. We are not boastful or loud people. He loves his hometown which is why he stayed for his senior year. The kid took very challenging advanced science college courses and earned an above 4.0 GPA and received the William V. Campbell Trophy. For folks who don't know what that is, its called the "Academic Heisman." He is both a supreme athlete and true scholar. His disposition is quiet but mature beyond his years. I would rather have someone who acts like Montana or Brady than Mayfield or Manziel.

I hope you saw the emotion he displayed in the Rose Bowl and now realize that this take is wrong. Maybe watch the interviews of Herbert where he’s reduced to tears when talking about his time at Oregon. He’s introverted for sure, but just because he isn’t a real vocal guy doesn’t mean he doesn’t love football.
Also, give Herbert the same supporting cast as Burrow and he’d put up just as glamorous of stats.

As a life long Ducks fan and an Oregon alum, I think you are correct with your gut feeling, but with a caveat-- Justin just fulfilled his dream-- winning the Rose Bowl as an Oregon QB. Consider that he grew up 2 miles from Autzen Stadium and that his family has strong ties to Oregon football. His entire heart commitment was to Oregon football, but not football in a universal sense. I don't think he has a lot of passion to play professional football. He has other aspirations, as demonstrated by being a 4.0 GPA student.

Going to pause and give my thoughts before hearing yours. I am a Ducks fan. In my opinion he was a good QB but not a great QB. His numbers came at large against inferior opponents. He MIGHT make a solid QB in the pros but wont be top tier. I am very much hoping he proves me wrong but its what I saw watching him.
Edit after watching. Yep. We are on the same page here. I see exactly what you see. I thought he was going to light it up this year. He was ok. Just didn't get me hyped up. Where as my second team Memphis who almost never gives me much to cheer about had me watching intently all season. I wanted my Colts to get Herbert. Honestly now I hope they keep Brisset and draft Brady White. Herbert wont be worth the draft pick his name is going to be called at.

I think you're misunderstanding the eye test. The eye test is looking at their size and arm strength. Herbert passes the eye test. Accuracy and personality is looking at the intangibles.

Herbert’s problem isn’t that he’s lacking passion. He, as well, has great physical traits. Herbert’s problem is that he struggles with touch, accuracy, and mechanics. It doesn’t matter that Herbert is an introvert, the reason Tua and Burrow are so much better than Justin Herbert is because of how accurate, poised, and polished their games are. Herbert’s got a ton of heart, size, and throwing power, but that’s not enough to justify picking him over someone like Burrow or Tua.

I think sometimes young QB's with extraordinary skills (big arm) dont celebrate much because they haven't experienced total domination with 1st ed receivers on a regular basis. Put Herbert in at LSU QB and you will get same or better performance.

When watching Herbert, I can definitely say that i would hope for him to make a bigger jump from last year to this year. Still has problems handling pressure, can be very inconsistent, and stares down receivers. This may be a bit nit picky but his dropback under center can sometimes be a little awkward but that's just me. I can say that he has really nice NFL throw power and can put the ball in a good spot. His throw on the run is impressive and can deliver. That being said, he should be good with play action. If i was an organization, I would take him late in the first round because of his ceiling but I definitely would put him behind a veteran his rookie year if possible. I feel like i may be one of the few that think as of now 12/24/19, he'd be better than Tua. That is mostly based on the injury concern. Tua has less arm strength and having a hip injury hampers his ability to get more velocity on the ball. But Tua is easily the smarter quarterback between the two. The reason I feel he has such a high ceiling is his height and athleticism along with his arm power and accuracy. His weaknesses are very apparent. He needs to get better at his pocket presence by knowing when to throw it out or take a sack for example, when to run, inconsistency, and the general quarterback intangibles like not staring his receivers down. Something like that. The other week Seattle radio had an interview with Russ Wilson's brain coach, all about his relentless positive attitude. In the Arizona State game you could see that Herbert was down and couldn't pick up the team. Maybe its not like/love But positive/negative attitude. That ability to accept that your behind X points but to percerver knowing that you're the better team and will win.
Look at what Wilson did to get the starting job in seattle to start with. Came in and out-worked the guy they just paid to take the job. 100% loves the game, always tinkering, working on his stuff, working out what works best with his receivers, working with the O-coordinator, just doing all of it.
Passion for football and a passion for winning is two different things. I get what you are saying. Passionate about winning require a relentless will to get better and be better. It’s an obsession. Most people do not have it. I don’t think Herbert has it either.

My concerns with him came about last year when he chose to stay in school. It was not the decision to stay in school that bothered me, I actually admire it when done for the right reason. My concern was that he seemed oftly worried about what team would draft them because he didnt want to go to certain places for all the wrong reasons. There were reports that he was concerned about things like lifestyle, weather, and east coast city life(because teams like the Skins and Giants were interested.) I could understand if he was worried about an organization with a bad track record, but that isnt what reports were saying. They were saying that he was concerned with "lifestyle" and that he liked his west coast "lifestyle."
I also think he is going to be lower rated in this class,than he was in last year's class where the early reports were that the Skins, Broncos and especially the Giants were interested. Last year I think he is a top 10 maybe even a top 5 pick. As it stands, he needs a good offseason to have a shot at that now.
