I've seen that there are cemeteries that are also purposed as parks and places where people walk like Mount Auburn in Boston. We talked about that cemetery in one of my urban planning classes as part of the city beautiful movement, and was just wondering if making cemeteries beautiful or park like with a lot walkability would end up hurting the intended purpose of it being a place of grief and remembrance. Also, do you guys ever run into the challenges of making graveyards accessible to people that just want to do their daily run through them?

Creating beautiful memorial parklands creates sacred landscapes of memory that many communities respond to very well, making these cemeteries and the services they offer more relevant to families.

What Cementery Management Software do you use ? And Why it is better than others?

We are cemetery planners. The cemeteries we work find that Stone Orchard Software (SOS by Central Square Technologies) works very well for them. It provides detailed information reports, supports GPS mapping to cemetery lots and is user friendly. As planners, we find the records generated by SOS to be high quality. Though Pontem Cemetery Management Software and HMIS for Windows, by Batesville are also commonly used and good choices.

The software you need depends on the degree of the complexity of your operations and its ability to integrate with your other current systems - such as your financial management software. Ideally your choice would optimize your ability to create records that provide you with useful cemetery activity, inventory and financial performance data for decision making and planning purposes. Which ever software you choose, to be effective - will require staff training and time to customize its content and database structure to suit your operations.
