Crank It Up: Slash's Tone on the Marshall SV20H

- Trying out some cabs from CelestionSpeakerMix and seeing if I can go for that Appetite for Destruction tone.. It's been said that Slash used a modded SuperTremolo 1959 on that album, so the SV20 should at least get the tone in the ballpark...
I'm using a Gibson LP Standard and boosting the amp with a little bit of drive from an EarthQuaker Plumes OD.
Reverb and Delay are from STL tones.
It's 100% there with the middle and treble sound It's just missing a bit of the low end....but still sounds better than most of the slash tones I've heard on youtube
@@jimmyjackson3117 yeah the little amps don’t have that low end that the big boys have… but I don’t think it really matters in a mix.
@@guitarlairI agree, if you’re jamming with a bassist- does it really matter if you’re missing the low end? Probably makes it a cleaner stage sound
fantastic tone. Superb playing too. Well done man
Thanks brother!! Cheers!!!
Your video makes me happy! Awesome tone 👌
@@SajidWaikhom thanks buddy, glad you like it!!
SICK!!! Great demo! Thank you for posting it.
Thanks for commenting bro!!!
Absolutely great tone and playing man! To me, you pretty much nailed it. Would you consider doing the same video about UYI tone? Awesome video ❤
Thanks buddy!!! I'll def try it if I get my hands on a JCM800, the UYI tone is amazing too!
@guitarlair agreed. Actually, it's my favorite!
Wahow!! Great sound!! Well done!!
thanks buddy
good stuff! Im a big fan of Slash's guitar tone.
thanks buddy!! Totally agree, Slash's guitar tone is smth else!!
Man that is sick. Sounds awesome. Definitely in the slash zone. Love those Marshall heads like that. I wish I could make one of those work in my space but they are too loud, so I have to settle for a sound that like 80% that good but sounds great at very low volume. Awesome man. What a snarl that thing has. Great plying too 🎸🔥👍🏼
thanks bro!! These little versions of the classic amps that Marshall released are amazing, you're not gonna have the same headroom of the big amps but you'll def be in the ballpark tone wise.. The secret is to use an attenuator or IRs... I have so much fun messing around with the amp, you can get so many different tones out of it, it's super versatile..
@@guitarlair cool man, I realized I didn’t complete my thought earlier. What I was trying to say is that because I can’t crank amps at home (I tend to ply later at night when kids are asleep) I have gone all digital. I use a kemper profiler amp and use a 1x12 kemper cab or a little desk amp that basically functions like studio monitors. I can get very good tones but never quite able to get that raw snarl of the real thing. Before I got the kemper I considered getting a cool little head like that, or maybe a Friedman (dirty Shirley or something) and then use attenuator or ox box, but all that was gonna cost a fortune and I was unsure how it would work in my space, so I went with the kemper. I’m sure I’ll get one eventually.
How loud was that when you were playing? Like rock the house loud? Ha
@@slashtrio I think if you only play at home it's worth it investing a little more and getting these small amps..I usually use the SV20 with the master volumes around 4/5 and I use IRs with the Torpedo Captor... then I hear it through my monitors.
@@guitarlair hey man, I appreciate the information. While I have been playing quite a while I was never a gear head and always used little combo tube amps back in the day. I went down the digital rabbit hole over the last couple of years. So would you mind explaining what you mean by IRs? Is that impulse response? So you run the head through your captor and then out of studio monitors or small cabs? Yea, I play only at home and often play along to backing tracks or music.
@@slashtrio yeah, Impulse Responses are like digital cabs, you load them on your computer and out of studio monitors, you don't need to use small cabs because the IR already is the cab itself. I love the York Audio IRs and the Celestion SpeakerMixPro too.
Sounds great!
thx buddy
Nighttrain intro sounded great!
@@8CountAudio thanks buddy!!!
Tone is very good for slash !
thanks buddy!!
@@guitarlair i'm trying to do the same.
I'm using tone city golden plexi v2 or model m v2 plug into a bugera v22.
I'm using a impulse ir loader pedal too using celestion v30 sim. And a boost.
Damn dude! Im not an expert but it sounds close to me. Nice playing and tone.
thanks buddy!! I love this amp, very versatile
Great playing and amp
thanks buddy
nice dude! stock lp standard?
thanks bro, yeah it's a 2022 Standard.. never changed anything on the guitar, I think it comes with Burstbuckers.
@@guitarlair Standard 50's or 60's?
@@custommelody7091 50s!!
I love the tone and the playing gj man ! which attenuator are you using ?
Thanks bro!! I'm using a torpedo captor!!
@@guitarlair is it worth it as an attenuator and cab sim ? Because i'm lost between all the attenuators on the market (Suhr, Ox, Fryette,boss...)
I would like to hear this through a real cab with v30's to see how it compares
me too, that would be nice to try!!
i also have the SV20 and recently got a V30--instant GNR toan, compared to the speaker i had before, which was in the G12 fam.
Sounds really good! I own the same amp- can I please ask what is “Celestionspeakermix” - is it an impulse response pack?
thanks buddy!! Yeah, its a software from Celestion in which you can use cabs and speakers, for me it's the best one I've used so far, it's not IRs it's some sort of dynamic IR, it's called DSR, to me it's sounds more organic because they use some technology that makes the IR not static, so you get the dynamics of the speaker, it's pretty cool, there's a trial version!!
@@guitarlair sounds awesome, I must check it out - thanks.
Little beast,you using any pedals?
yes, a Plumes overdrive to boost the gain..
Sounds amazing! What were the settings of the plumes?
@@yomitsik thanks buddy.. I normally dial the level around 12, tone at 2, add a little bit of gain and leave the toggle switch in the middle on mode 2 (it just adds a natural drive without compressing too much the tone).
Thanks buddy! Do you think a ge-7 can also make the amp sound like that?
@@yomitsik absolutely, I just added the Plumes to push the amp a little bit with a little bit of gain and mid/high frequencies.. I've been chasing his tone for a while, he used a modded Super Tremolo with an extra gain stage on the Appetite album, I noticed that all these Plexis are in the same ballpark, you just need to EQ them a little bit with the right frequencies.. the amp itself will get very close to his tone but it lacks that extra pre gain stage that pushes the amp to get that snarl sound, if you crank the master on a Plexi it gets farty and you lose definition, so his tone comes from that extra pre gain stage, he doesn't crank the master on his amp, he find the sweet spot on the master volume and pushes the amp with that extra gain stage, you can very successfully replicate that extra gain stage with a clean OD or an EQ.
Thanks for the informative answer! I actually have the sv20 and the sc20, both combo, but can’t get the exact same snarl sound 😕
@@yomitsik np man!!try using different speakers...do you use any attenuator? IRs? how do you normally connect your amp?
I’ve been thinking of getting this amp + the 2x12 cab but put greenbacks in, what kind of speakers did you use in this program you used? :)
get it bro, this amp is so versatile but there's a detail that ppl forget to mention, the cab and speaker you use can make this amp sound completely different... I use a software by Celestion called speakermixpro, they use DSRs and have different speakers( it's some sort of IR but with more dynamic).. for this Slash tone I used two celestion V30s one mic'ed with a sm57 in the center and the other one with a condenser mic off axis I believe... but if I switch to greenbacks it's harder to achieve this sound, if you watch my other video(boosting with the SD1) I'm using greenbacks and you can notice the tone is heavier and has more low end. So depending on the speaker you use you can go from classic rock tones to metal with this amp.
have you modified the amplifier?
nop, no mods!!
How about some UYI?
I think Slash used a modded JCM800 to record the UYI albums, so the tone is a little bit different.
It's not the Slash tone but it's a very good hardrock tone
@@chocolatecookie8571 thanks bro!!!
Well..unfortunately..20watts remains 20watts..It’s same the old story..
yeah, you won't have that huge headroom and low end of the big boys.
Which speakers did you try,?
V30s..one mic’d with a sm57 and the other one mic’d with a condenser
what speaker and cabinet you are using here?
Celestion Speaker Mix Pro SIRs
