Forms for me. Never been much of a fighter, always been a forms man.
Wing Chun, Forms and Sanda ❤️💪👍
Honestly all of it.. Lol
Wish it was longer.
I really enjoyed the Sanda and Wing Chun section
My personal favs are: hard qigong, forms, meihua and sanda (light sparring). But it is all the trainings combined, that will take your kung fu to the highest level. 🙏
Hello
The monks know how to be hard as nails but also how to be funny and relaxing. These guys are so respectable. :)
How men should be. But it must be taught that fighting is not the purpose of a human being.

I was honestly so happy to see women learning Shao'lin and going through the rigorous training regimes. It inspires me ❤
Amen.
Try it at home.
they obviously weren’t experiencing the same rigor. I would save the emotional impact for when it’s really the same training
@@donsimons9810 real martial arts doesn't take much physical strength. If you hit Arnold Schwarzenegger in his pecks, he wouldn't feel shit. Even if you put all your strength into it, he's just too buffed. Now if you hit him in the solar plexus, that he would feel, and a woman could knock the wind out of him that way just like a man. But doing that kind of thing takes intellect and thinking and meditation, not just steroids like with MMA.
Also don't forget, Wing Chun, which is 50% of Jeet Kune Do, was created by a female...Shaolin Monk.
I think all styles can be made to work, but if you sincerely feel like your technique can only be done by a man because you need to be in the same weight class, you need a better one. Because on the street you might as well be a woman. No one your same size or smaller is going to fight you. It's going to be somebody bigger or somebody with a weapon. So your technique has to work on that. Not just in the ring against the same weight class.
many of just voluntary projects for a time only.
coming maybe from Taekwondo or something else and you have to pay it.
I’m a Jiujitsu instructor and I have been training on and off in Chinese Martial arts for about 30 years. This video was fascinating and inspirational thank you for sharing these beautiful arts.
Agreed!
do you think shaolin beats jiujitsu thank you
@@johnnydhollywood1587 shaolin is the origin of all eastern asian martial art, including jiujitsu.
The Shaolin Temple looks like an arduous and grueling but fun and wonderful place to train the mind and body. It looks like it would be an amazing experience!
اذهب وجرب ستكون تجربة ممتعه لو كان لدي لغة صينيه او انجليزيه كنت سأذهب على الفور 😂❤️
I train mma (striker) alot of what I see here at its very core basics are similar. Minus the crazy acrobatics and "flowy"? Type movements. I understand that they are more for emphasis on precision and control over every tiny body movement, balance, dexterity, and over all mastering your body mechanics. MMA and modern martial arts in general tend to focus on the simple, most brutal, most efficient techniques that can be easily taught to anyone. How effective that "anyone" is, depends entirely on them. Given the insane athleticism displayed here, and YEARS(not months as you see so many people drop MMA training after a few months and believe they are the ultimate weapon) of training, fighting one of these masters would definitely be not an ideal situation to be in. I got to train anywhere from 2-4 hrs a day pre covid. These guys train all day everyday. Day in day out. Not just the body, but the mind is extensively trained. This is my take away from this. They truly are training in "real" martial arts. It's eye opening to see true masters of traditional martial arts displaying their skills, and not the McDojo types that are all bark, no bite...you know the ones Xu Xiao Dong AKA Mad Dog embarrassed. Very cool documentary and eye opening to myself. Loved the selection of bgm and how they were used in this video, many of which come from my favorite games. That little bit you went into around the 21 min mark, had me take a deeper look inside myself, and ask myself what I was training for. Self defense? Ego? Pride? Maybe all 3? One thing I did come out of this thought provoking moment was: Seeing my limit, and going beyond. I feel the reason many MMA practioners come off as toxic, are the same reason why fake masters of the traditional styles are also toxic is: they havent climbed to the peak of their mountain, just found a nice plateau, with a nice view, on which they can look down upon everyone. Thank you so much for this documentary. Subbed!
nice 👌
Ok MMA worshiper. Wait till new Martial art styles comes up . Till then lol 😂 by the way , Shaolin Kung Fu was developed about 1500 years ago . So you are comparing like full equipped Roman empire army vs Full equipped Modern US Army differences .... Satisfied ? LMAO 🤣
@@iwontbebeat7111 If Shaolin has so much value for fighting, why is it that the only Shaolin students who can fight are the ones who did the sanda/kickboxing course?
Clearly the traditional Shaolin training methods are lacking something when it comes to fight training.
Good for circus tricks though. And fleecing rubes.
Seriously iam very interested to learn it
@@maxgoldfield7790
Who said Sanda/ kickboxing course are the only one can fight ? I don't get it .
I love Chinese martial arts. I was fascinated by Shaolin temples and all the old movies since I was a kid. I love the power behind the smooth movements. It's a pity that I don't take the time to visit a Shaolin temple. Maybe I will manage to visit such a Shaolin temple in the future. I love the calm and balanced way of the Shaolin fighters. I could watch the training for hours and I would love to join in. But the students there are much younger and on a much higher level. I would probably need the whole thing in slow motion :)
Thanks for the very great video.
Sorry for my bad English (translated with DeepL).
The only Chinese martial arts that make you better at unarmed fighting are Sanda and Shuai Jiao. Everything else is incredibly doubtful - in most cases, you'll just waste years of your life and a small fortune, just to become worse at fighting then when you started.

Thanks for doing this. I visited a Shaolin Academy in Shandong and was a bit surprised. It confirmed something you commented on early in this video about how westerners approach martial arts. The Academy was populated with a lot of immature and insecure westerners, mostly American and some European. They would often would talk about martial arts in terms of what it would do to another person as opposed to the technique and the goals to maintain. I'd like to see more on Wing Chun and also more specifically the Forms-- breaking up the forms, showing their names, a breakdown of the techniques. It's interesting how you sped through the forms.......

Thank you for the respect you show to the monks and to Kung Fu, hopefully the world one day will stop hating and instead start respecting and loving our differences.
For the "don't work in MMA" crowd, sanda and even wing chun have been used with success in combat sports. Qinna is considered small joint manipulation and banned in combat sports. On the street with no rules you're free to break arms and fingers. Hard qigong to take hits comes in handy for both combat sports and street self defense.
yeah this is for real life combat, not pure sport
The agility alone in real life would allow to engage and disengage at will.
Contro un buon pugile, non avrebbero speranze nemmeno per strada
The argument isn't that techniques don't work, it's that it is missing submission wrestling and grappling on the ground
@@arihaviv8510 I don't think that fighting on the ground is a realistic scenario. You're an extremely easy target for your opponent's allies when you're on the ground and if you're opponent is bigger than you you're likely to be dominated anyway. Best to make enemy fall if possible and then run away.
It's kinda mindblowing to see this. I find the Shaolin fascinating and when I watch documentaries about them, they aways seem super-serious and distant and all that. But here they seem very approachable, they're smiling, joking and laughing. It's actually beautiful.
They are humans after all

You know what is truly amazing??
How we can come here from pure loving source energy, connected to to all things through love. In such a short amount of time here, we become so out of touch with everything that we are. To see what we must do to remove the fear. Look beyond pain. To feel truly alive again. To reconnect with our higher power that exists in each life giving breath we take.
It absolutely blows my mind..
What a beautiful experience it was that you chose, and they allowed!! I thank you for sharing this with all of us. 🙏🙏 I also send much love, light, and gratitude to all the masters that have dedicated their lives to share this training so others can experience this beautiful way of life , and learn the culture and ways of the elders, that walked on this planet before them..
You are walking on sacred ground when you enter the gates of that Temple..
Its beautiful to find places dedicated just to martial arts and craft it puts a smile on my face a true sanctuary.
As someone who trained under a Shaolin monk in the States and as a former Buddhist monk in Myanmar, this really captures the true essence of Shaolin and Buddhism philosophy. Watching this video reminded me of all of the unforgettable times I had in Shaolin and you reminded me of core foundations and techniques that I forgot, so thank you.
Could you please tell me how do i get to one of the shaolin schools? How did you get enrolled there?I'm so beyond fascinated with this
Shattering yourself, then raising from the pieces, brings a strange sense of tranquility build on the certainty that you **can** endure this, and the next, and the next... Much like birds that learns to trust their own wings, and let go of the fear of heights. I would love to experience this sort of training. It looks like it would make you (truly) believe in your own potential.
Amazing documentary, inspiring, thorough and well covered. Thank you for sharing.
What an amazingly beautiful experience! Thank you for sharing with us!
this makes me feel more confident to navigate through the difficulty in my life now.
One of the things I like about traditional martial arts like what's shown here is that a character development/ training takes place. Not just giving fighting techniques to anyone who can pay.
Well, there are no fighting techniques. It's all just mystical nonsense and circus tricks. These 'warriors' never fought anybody.
@@Arigator2 Well, Shaolin Temple and Shaolin Kung Fu was made to be used in war back then for centuries so it is not nonsense. It is just that today, there are no more wars so they won't be able to fight anybody.
@Connor Urch - They are con-artists who prey on the ignorant. They know nothing about fighting. They are no different than circus performers. That guy is doing a dance routine.
@Connor Urch - They've never fought anybody. They're dancers and con artists.
Nothing more than a cheerleader routine they practice to get tourism. It was never used in war and there is no way to even verify that claim other than to watch them fight real opponents. Which they almost never do and the few I've seen lost in 25 seconds . 5'3" and 115lbs male dancers.
The movements are beautiful, and precise. Just amazing.
This is fascinating. Thank you for making. Highly disciplined individuals always inspire me. Thanks!
I can't explain why I'm brought to immediate tears of joy when I watch these monks move, speak, breathe this honest, human way of existing. If I could take a one way ticket anywhere, I'd like to stay in a Shaolin monestary. Their way is so pure and steeped in ancient knowledge that western culture just doesn't possess. Incredible film, beautifully pit together, perfectly showed the beauty of the monks, the temple, the landscape and the practices. Well done. The qigong is something I'd try, I have so much built up restlessness energy in my muscles I typically punch my muscles to relax them anyways lol
Your naivety benefits the very opposite. Sadly you are blessed with the ignorance of a foreigner, as nothing they teach is remotely legitimate anymore.
it is probably past trauma mixed with fetishizing mysterious cultures that cause you to cry.
I feel you completely. I wish I was there and had that opportunity when I was younger to do it. It is not like I don't do martial arts but the beauty, sincerity and purity with no ego as they are training you.... I never experienced that.
i enjoyed every second of that documentary, but what i enjoyed even more is the effort put into making it. Thank you so much
I love this it is inspiring to me, I recently have stared walking again and the movements have help me in just a few weeks to regain my balance, Not only my balance but my mental state as well has improved. If I were able to come over there i would do so. Chi young is great because it sends blood flow to my legs and I"m so grateful to God that I found this site. Its is amazing and wonderful that the human spirit can be regained by the simple life lessons and yes to be an athlete I'll never be again but this shows me above all that there is hope for me yet. Just to be alive and breath and love again has been amazing. Life is short and I wish everyone could feel the absolute Joy watching and following along, It's cooler than air guitar. Love you guys and God Speed to you.

This is one of the most beautiful and heart warming videos I have ever seen
This is one of the coolest video’s I’ve ever seen. I enjoy learning martial arts, Bruce Lee’s one of my heroes and am now very much working out every other day of the week. It’s just a part of my life and I’m currently training at two gyms including a boxing gym. I can’t do without being physically active, happy and focused it’s like breathing for me. God bless you my fellow martial artist and thank you for sharing.

Perhaps it may surprise you, but the sparring with the one really well placed and timed kick was the most impressive one to me. That is true beaty, measure in time and space!
That was a great film. Thank you so much for making this and sharing it with the world. 🙏
Beautiful. Loved watching every moment. Your channel over the last 6 years has made a big impact on me in terms of martial arts and seeing the friendship you, Spencer and the others have was a privilege to watch and I have to say that I am jealous of those bonds. Keep being great Philip. 🙏
I really gotta thank you man. You were the one who inspired me to find a martial arts school and start training. A few years ago I saw your video on how to find a teacher/school and one of the number one things I remember you saying was something about "not letting that fire die out". I'm happy to say since then I have found a good school, persevered, and even surpassed a few of the people from my school who have been there longer than me because of my fire and love for the art. Even during the pandemic I found it in me to keep the fire burning strong and it's payed off no doubt. Thanks again brother, keep the content coming!
Thanks for sharing such an amazing documentary, ❤ Blessings 🙌

Great video! This brings back a lot of memories. I learned Shaolin 25 years ago, as my basic style. Later on, I focusing on Baji Quan style while I also learning Pencak Silat. And you're right: the real Kung Fu master (or any other master from any martial art style and discipline) will never get into a real fight without a really crucial and important reason, they will almost always avoid fighting because they know the fatal impacts that the opponent will suffer

Very inspiring, makes me want to practice harder again.
This was so cool to watch, I'm 55 and used to practise Shaolin Kung Fu with Sifu Walter Toch in Belgium. everything I saw in the video was exactly how I remember my training and it took me back and refreshed some things that became evident. And you explain everything so well.
I practised for 7 years and learned persistence, self confidence and so much more. I later took on Vipassana meditation and did two Silent retreats.
After the 7 years I pursued my life time dream and became a Commercial diver. They warned me and I was invincible ,right...7 years of Training. but years later it took it's toll on my body. I'm practically Robocop! I still practise Qi Gong because I refuse to have screws put in my back.
I recently picked up my old Staff and slowly working on what my back will allow me to. no matter how fast or slow the flow , it is mediative.
Even 30 years later I will automatically and surprize myself how I still have the reflexes. Catching that cup or falling glass is still...nice.
what is the school in belgium thank you
Sometimes I wish I could have grow up having such training, because it would've helped tremendously not only my physique but also my issue of self-discipline.
I relate to you
self discipline is learned, like anything else. don't feel you can never learn it, or that it's unobtainable.
start small and build. the will is a muscle.
you can still start
I'd rather have an education. Being abandoned by your parents, and left to be raised by a troupe of kung fu circus performers, who don't even have a concept of child welfare - absolutely not. That's only a fantasy that soft, privileged people from the West could have.
Stop having kung fu fantasies. Be an adult. Get an education. Better yourself. Support your family better. That's the true Chinese way.
@@shaolinabbott9161 Self-discipline isn't some obscure Kung Fu myth, it's a completely normal part of every human's every-day life. It's an essential part of some peoples' lives, and it only has benefits. With self-discipline you can do a lot of things that you otherwise wouldn't be able to do. It's not a martial arts technique, it's a fucking learned trait. Quite simple. No "kung fu circus performance" is needed nor involved. So to your whole spiel about "Being an adult, getting an education, better yourself, support your family" ALL involves Self-discipline in varying degrees.
Just Incredible, I'm 55 and studied various martial arts including some wing chun. Currently I was looking into some Bo staff movement and found a beautiful Wushu tutorial. Then stumbled upon your Shaolin training Vid! Lets just say I have subscribed, saved and will watch over and over again! I heard Rumors that the teachings were very strenuous, and this is proof of that! Congrats on going through what you did and document! Thank You!
Bo = Japanese staff= Chinese
Common mistake.
Bo is translated as staff so when you call a bo "bo staff" you are calling it a staff staff
So grateful for the insights and info in this video! Been researching different kinds of martial arts like crazy, but this is the most helpful example! It's also motivating to watch someone share their experience with authenticity. At the end when Shifu Shi Yanjun wished him all of those blessings for his channel, he seemed really moved. It affirmed all his earlier insights about what was most fulfilling and gratifying about his training experience. imo, he's lacking that affected, performative commentary that's on-brand w/ YT vloggers these days. Its truly refreshing. for real. After seeing countless vlog in this genre (my life as/i try/cultural immersion), what a blessing to find one that exemplifies learning from a specific culture by grounding oneself in honest, humble reverence and humor! the bruh check hard qigong bit 😂😂 reminds me how it felt watching Anthony Bourdain in Parts Unknown for the first time. Sparring and form, for me. I think this is a healthy path to finding out who'se the boss. Then, to reclaim the driving seat. In western societies, spiritual culture is often ridiculed, and ignored. We become overly sensitive of how the body "feels", and rely on pills and drugs and alcohol to make it feel better. The boss of your life will always be you. Hard training makes you come back, or closer to, who's the boss - you. Thank you very much Phillip for that wonderful video. Will watch more from you! Cheers.

@@philiphartshorn heck yea man! I’m definitely gonna have to increase my speed stats after seeing this!
The inclusion of the Elder Scrolls music is sublime. What a wonderful journey. Thankyou :)
And the smash music 😭👏🏾👏🏾
its the donkey kong country music that resonates with me. 90s kids go.
Thanks for sharing this wonderful video have always been interested in kung fu and the monks I would love to see more on the meditation and Shong thanks so much for sharing
You’re welcome!!
Hello Philip. I'm watching from France, and you did managed to convey the depth and the respect these monks deserve. Curiously, it made me envious of your experience there, as everyone watching I suppose. I've seen a few videos about 'Shaolin Monks', but none of them conveys such respect and made such an impact on the mind. Great to know you enjoyed it too, and hope you'll have the occasion to return there. It was also very nice to see ladies training too. Thank you for sharing! Stay safe.
ps sorry for my bad English, hope you can understand it!
respect for poor skill? being fake about skill? or what??? fukk make some sense
Im living in China for 6 years, and I've never even thought before about going to Shaolin! Thank you so much, for discovering different China for me, out of all the megapolises they've built around. Big appreciatiom for this film!!! 👍👍👍👍
I just wanna say I've been in bad times for a long time. Lately it got worse. I nearly forgot how to let go of certain things and help myself feel better. But your words at 21:16 helped me a lot. I know it doesn’t matter to you or anyone here but I just wanted to thank you from the bottom of my heart.
This is very moving to read, and I can assure you, it matters very, very much. Thank you for sharing, and you’re endlessly welcome. I almost didn’t include that part of the video, but now I know it was the right choice.
Try change your name and do some 断舍离 stuff
I found this video to be eye-opening and motivating to learn as many techniques as possible. The content was amazing and I will probably watch it again sometime in the future.😎☯
Thank you so much 🙏🏻
I really enjoyed your video and you are right about everything❤
I love seeing these beautiful people and their lives. The experience must have been so life changing. I wish I could go on a journey like this! Living happy has become an important life lesson for me. It’s nice to see the monks incorporating it as well. And it doesn’t take much to have true happiness. Love this documentary. Congrats on your invitation!
lmfao your tourists being ripped off , given a fake assed experience ... WOW ... guess we all gotta eat and yall easy marks for them
Very proud of my ancestors who developed this unmatchable combat techniques and herbal medicines....
Bodhi Dharman an Indian and Buddha also 🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳
Same bro.. 🇮🇳
Fihal to Ghanta bhi nahi hai hamare pas
Bodhidharma only taught Zen Buddhism, some meditation, and "exercise moves" to the Chinese monks, ...There were no records of Bodhidharma actually knowing martial art or knowing how to fight...All those combat techniques of Shaolin Kung Fu were well-developed by the Chinese monk themself thorough out thousands of years. For example the Qi Gong, and Tai Chi from Daoism...Do Indian have Qi Gong and Tai Chi?
So, where is the Indian king fu? 👀
@@The_Art_of_AI_888 did you know about Kalaripayattu?
It is believed that this is/was the first martial arts.
And Bodhi Dharman taught this to Chinese.
However modern shaolin Kung Fu is little bit different but still kalari is the grand parent here.
The best documentary on Shaolin Temple training that I have seen so far! Great work!
Thank you so much 🙏🏻
Thanx so much for sharing. I’m really glad that someone has realized one of my very few old dreams that I was never able to do when I was young ….I would like to see more about the Wing chun part please
You my sir are inspirational man I can’t even lie I started my spiritual journey not too long ago n I’ve recently done some shadow work and now I’m constantly looking to do things out my comfort zone learn new things and constantly push myself to a higher level but sometimes struggle with self discipline due to mental health so this for me is so motivating n inspirational that from now on I CAN and I’m going to push myself and give my all in everything I do I just wanted to thank you for this I subbed you and I wish everyone love and a fulfilled life 💯🙏💙💪🏼🙌
wow so you moved from one delusion to another... you are the type of studend good teachers try to avoid. unless they are Narcs with a mystic lining that like to talk nonsense to easily suggestable minds
Mesmerising video. What Shaolin Monks do seems almost magical at times. Great respect for those who have continued to practice and retain and pass on the complete knowledge, mind, body and spirit. If only I was 40 years younger I’d have a go… Maybe… Well perhaps a bit of Tai Chi. Thank you Philip, like I said at the start, mesmerising.
You have a wonderful way of making each facet of Kung Fu accessible; thanks kindly.
I love your use of videogame music throughout the video. I'm inspired...well done.
