Enjoyed hospitality when Tottenham my favourite team played Wigan my home town team in 2006 and Martin Peters was one of the Spurs legends. he said no one remembered this game.... RIP to a great player

Buchan had made his debut against us the previous season at WHL. Still only the player to captain English and Scottish FA Cup winning teams.

Five of the United XI had played in the European Cup final four a bit years earlier, but fair to say all of them were past their best, as was Denis Law - playing in midfield in a desperate move to try and eek out the last drops of quality he had. Wyn Davies had been brought in but was over 30 too, while you can sense MacDougall isn't liked by his teammates - Bobby Charlton especially. The game was on October 28th, and United had won two out of 15 league games and been knocked out of the League Cup by Bristol Rovers.
Funnily enough, after this hammering, United did have a minor revival with three wins and a draw in the following five games (including a 2-0 win over Liverpool), with MacDougall and Davies scoring three goals each - but defeats to Stoke and Palace (5-0!) saw O'Farrell sacked. Within 18 months, United were relegated and all this team bar Stepney, Buchan and Morgan were gone.

Sadly United looked a team in decline 1972/73 with their former star players at the end of their careers.
My own team Everton also had their worst team since the 50s that year. Billy Bingham was appointed manager of Everton 73-4 while United appointed Tommy Docherty. Bingham nearly won the Division One title in 74-75 after shrewd signings. After a year in Division two United came up and played fast attacking football after Docherty signed Steve Coppell, Gordon Hill Stuart Pearson and solid defenders, relatively cheaply who went on to give them great success in the FA Cup.
Maybe showing recent big name signings often fall short of the talent both clubs had in the mid late 70s. Another mystery is why Spurs with so many great players, often won Cup competition's: but never the Division One or Premier league title since 1961

From the start, Utd players seemed to be gasping for breath, getting the run around from Spurs.
The glorious '68 EC victory must have faded from memory by now....Utd now in serious decline.

No.6 Mike Dillon for Spurs made 26 appearances but in 1974
was farmed out on loan to Millwall and Swindon making just 9
appearances and seemingly drifting into American soccer there
after. A great pity, he looked to be Second Division standard, so
it's a mystery why no club took him on.

Funny that this vid should pop up in my recommendations this week i.e. three days after Man Utd were thrashed at Old Trafford again (this time by Liverpool).

A bit weird to watch Denis Law wearing no 4 shirt . He is a no 9 player.

Charlton deliberately drove the ball into young Ralph. He waited a long time to exact revenge. You see, Ralph actually had a full, luscious head of hair, but as part of a long-standing and elaborate joke, he shaved the top off, grew the sides & not only imitated Charlton's combover but surpassed it. The ladies couldn't take their eyes off him either as he flew down the wing with those long, flapping, golden strands taking wild flight in the mild autumnal breeze.
    This is a true story.

He lasted 2 more months before being sacked after losing 5-0 at Palace. United were in deep deep trouble.

actually I find in b&w the picture is clearer & less busy, as there isn't any colour to distract your eyes and the players & ball is all you need for the brain to concentrate watching. The only prob is, is when both strips look the same in bw, so then you differentiate players by hair styles (ahhh Bobby C & Ralph Coates comb overs is a prob!).

George Best flattering to deceive, a pale shadow of his
former self. Seemed to have lost that devastating burst
of speed, running up blind allies, sadly no end product.
Any other MU player would have been dropped long ago.

Well he would never acknowledge it,but all of the clubbing, boozing, womanizing¬ looking after himself finally caught up!
When he was in his late teens,he may have been able to be out all night &still be able to shrug it off, play Saturday afternoon or midweek&be MOTM.But the body can only handle so much abuse& eventually it begins to rear it's ugly head!

..and they were worried at half time when 0-3 down! Charlton at this stage in his career & going back a few years in domestic matches, he rarely got tackled & never a good crunching tackle. Untouchable bar 1 person? Yes, brother Jack gave him personal attention. He done one on TV & got a free kick against & he convulsed a great chuckle as Bobby wearily got up not happy.
