    Kayaks are a fun and cost effective way to target Kokanee. In many ways due to their stealth and more irregular speeds they can often be a more effective way to target these landlocked salmon. Here I offer 5 tips to help improve your Kokanee catch rates when fishing from a kayak.

    Can you make your giggling at the end a ringtone😀 that downrigger rod was on fire. That was a total pimp move talking to the camera giving the tip while reeling in the koke. Then total fish God karma and he came unhooked before the net 😂 awesome

    Downriggers can definitely make a difference. I watched your video on installing it and it looks like a solid unit. I opted several years ago to install a pair of scotty laketrollers though with 2 or 3lb weights. The boom is the right length already and they use the universal scotty flush mount and backing plate so when your not using the Downriggers you can use the mounts for any other scotty accessories. Plus that mount is compact enough to be mounted just about anywhere.

    I had assumed that was an electric downrigger because you said it was easy to use in your kayak, that is until I clicked on the linked you posted above. How do you manage a manual downrigger in your kayak?

      I don't I generally do anywhere from 20-30' setbacks but I don't think its necessary unless you are fishing shallows (say less than 10'). My opinion would be different in a boat propelled by an outboard or kicker motor.

    Another great video. Out of curiosity once the downrigger started getting all the bites did you try to add enough lead to the flat rod to get down to the same depth or did you keep them at different depths the entire trip? Also, do you use braid or mono when trolling for kokes?

    • @spiltmilt
      @spiltmilt  3 роки тому

      I dropped it to the same depth and picked up a few on the dropper but the downrigger was more consistent. I want to go back and try a comparison running them at similar depths.

    So, I totally get moving to a peddle or power kayak, but at that point, why not just get a 8’-12’ aluminum boat with an electric motor? You get more room for easier access to gear and a more stable platform.

    • @kirkjohnson9353
      @kirkjohnson9353 3 роки тому +2

      I think he car tops the kayak- perhaps he prefers that ? I myself use an 8' aluminum boat that fits in the back of my truck- works great and has the advantages you mention.

    • @spiltmilt
      @spiltmilt  3 роки тому +2

      Kirk is right I do cartop but the real advantage to me of a kayak over an aluminum boat is that it's quite easy to sink a small aluminum boat in rough water but extremely difficult if not impossible to sink a sit-on-top kayak.

    • @stingray4540
      @stingray4540 3 роки тому +1

      @@spiltmilt true, it’s possible to sink an aluminum boat, but I’ve been in some pretty hairy seas in a 12’ aluminum and didn’t ever feel at risk of sinking. That is something to consider though.
      I used to car top a 10’ aluminum boat, and growing up we carried the 12’ on my dad’s lumber rack. It’s definitely not as sexy, but boy the room is nice and the option to take a friend.
      I only brought it up because a kayak is something I’m interested in, but the more I think about it, I wonder if it’s worth getting a kayak for me and two for the kids and leave the youngest home or just get a small aluminum and an electric motor. Of course there’s more fun in kayaking just in itself if you take fishing out of the equation. So there’s that.

    Alright, I live in E.Wa & there's no way you're keeping the 120 rule - I call BS, lol. Seriously, though, at the depths you were fishing the DR shouldnt have made any difference in catch rate. Did the action on the DR have more to do with rigging, or does it just do a better job holding the necessary depth?

    • @spiltmilt
      @spiltmilt  3 роки тому +1

      Close enough upper 60's for highs with water temps in the mid 50's "on the surface" by mid-day.
      I'm not sure what the cause in the difference was. I've always suspected that dropper rigs may affect the action of a dodger but I've been on boats where the droppers outfish the downriggers. The confidence in depth is certainly the major selling point for downriggers.
