- Welcome to Flashback Friday, the newest feature of www.Pixel-Dan.com!
Flashback Friday is a chance for me to share some of my past videos with everyone again. This will allow newer viewers to see a video they might not have yet seen, and allow the long-time viewers a trip down memory lane!
It also serves to show just how much my videos have evolved over the years. Warning: the quality will not always be very good in these older videos!
Today's flashback is an overview I did on the 1991 Uncanny X-Men toy line from Toy Biz! The video features an in-depth look at many of the first wave figures, playsets, and vehicles in what became a major toy line of the 1990's!
Original air date of this video was November 28, 2009.
Enjoy this blast from the past! And stay tuned, as more Flashbacks are on the way!

The first thing I noticed when my brother got magneto back in the early 90's was how much Magneto looked like Bill Clinton. Classic. lol
Wow...memories. Awesome review. I actually still have all my old toys in 7 huge boxes. Apparently that Storm was repainted 5 times because I have all of them.
My first experience customizing = cutting the suction cups off of Nightcrawler and gluing Wolverine's mask on
when i was a kid, my sister used to buy me x-men action figures from toy biz during my birthday. as i grew older, having my own job, I tried to complete my x-men collection, only to find out that toy biz stopped manufacturing toys. i so miss this
Remembering old memories it's like living them again!
I was the same way, these toys made me love comics
my first line of X-Men as well and still the best nightcrawler I think
LOL Loved you comment about Magneto's car! Made me laugh out loud!
I learned about the X-Men comics from these toys as well. I saw the commercial on tv & begged my mom for weeks to buy them for me until she finally bought me Wolverine. I took the Wolverine mask/ring to school the next day but I also lost it that same day.
I had THE ICEMAN the one that you can put in the freezer .
Wait they have that one
Wow, I'm really impressed, I knew nothing about these. Thanks for being so informative!
I have over 98 of these action figures still to this day. Including the original set of 9 along with wolverine and magnetos car. The X-Wing and a Sentinel.
I had all of these. Good times. Remember watching the cartoon and going to the comicbook stores reading x-men comics. The figures between 1993-1994 started to get better.
great flash back. I had the uncanny x men cyclops when I was a child. That's all I had from this line/set.
The Toy Biz X-Men toy line has to be one of my favorite toy lines ever.
Collossus has a "come at me bro!" action
Thanks for showing these, brings back a ton of memories
Aw man, the nostalgia! :) Awesome review dude, I remember these from ages ago, I only had Magneto, all the other figures came from the later assortments. I never saw the playsets, vehicles or super sized figs, so since you showed a few of them, my mind was blown.
My mom introduced my to these toys to get me away from buying more TMNT lol.
I had Storm, Archangel, I had a re-make of Cyclops with the blue/yellow version, Colossus, Magneto and Juggernaut. I think I had Apocalypse, but I think my X-men toys defeated him/killed him (I lost it I think in one of my toy wars mahawhahah)
Ammar Napata this didn't happen sir.
Matt Davis way to be a buzzkill
I had the wolverine and arc angel....loved them dearly
yes yes yes ughhhhh this was me as a kid i loved this line and had nearly all of them
I started kindergarten in 1993 by that time the figures had been re-branded to fit the cartoon. It always bothered me why cyclops's hair wasn't visible!
Nice one !!! I love the early toy biz series of Marvel Superheroes and X Men
Wow...the memories....
I had a ton of these.. gonna buy them back.
night crawler was also my first xmen figure! I was like 9 years old when I got it, saw the back and had to buy the rest. I remember the wire coming out of the tail after i played with it for years.
For the era these came out, these look pretty incredible. I knew they were important, but I've got newfound appreciation for them.
They still look silly though. =P
Loved these. Had all the first line of figures. Magneto was my favorite.
I still have Nightcrawler...minus the suction cups and a tail
Man, I used to come up on these all the time at the store! For a $1 Too, it was was the time to be alive
I remember my buddy had a night crawler and I had the Wolverine. N when we were playing we was next to a window n we was playing n he was like wait n he licked the cups to stick em on the window. I was like EW! WTF R U DOING! THATS DIRTY! Lol 😂
ah toy bitz... in my opinion the best toy company EVER for both kids and adult collectors
I think I'm really going to like these segments.
Anyway, this video did bring me back a little. I had a few of these figures(and various other X-Men), and I enjoyed the heck out of them, and their accessories. For whatever reason a lot of Marvel figures had weird accessories, but such were the times, and I do miss them. These days you're lucky to get one accessory.
A bit late to this video, but my first figure was Archangel. I got quite a few other but none of them beat Forge, he was my instant favorite the second I saw him. It’s amazing how cheap they are on EBay MINT compared to other 90s figures.
My favorite in the set is juggernaut he just has a really cool action feature
Of all the GI JOEs, Transformers, heman and ghostbusters stuff I had as a kid. The x-men are the only thing I still have left. I have all the original series except the vehicles. for a while the sets and vehicles were real cheap at the local kaybees.
I miss when you used to always review toys based on videogames.
Yes sir every friday same here and just like you said about the wolverine I got excited when I found one but I lost it the same day : ( and could never find one again until years later.
My first was the Storm and Archangel was the second. I remember thinking Archangel was the coolest toy I’ve ever seen
hey Dan nice show! i always wanted to do something like that but in my native language wich is spanish, i have just a question do you unbox every piece or new piece (megaman kotobukiya for ex) or you buy doubles? (one for collect one for show) i wanna know cuz i have a lot of figures i wuold like to review but i dont want to open them cuz of collector value
Hey pixel dan could you do a review on the 2016 stretch Armstrong
Yeah... that's true. Good point! The only cool thing back in the day was having a Punisher action figure! :)
MY FIRST FIGURE WAS THAT WOLVERINE!
I remember being extremely frustrated as a kid that stores would never stock any of the female character figurines. There'd be a million copies of every incarnation of Wolverine, but finding one Storm or Rogue was impossible. The first figure I ever owned was Juggernaut. I can still remember playing with it and thinking "I need more of these!" and needed to collect every single one. And the same as for you, it was the action figures that first introduced me to the X-Men.
god this takes me back I was 11 when these came out and got picked on but I didn't care
Dan ! can you please pull some strings & ask some of your buddy's if Kane "Blue Gun holster" Variant was actually manufactured from the x-force series 1 , thank you
Even as a kid, I never really cared for "action features." I would just rather use my imagination for the heroes' powers.
That said, Cyclops' action feature was pretty cool.
I always hated when figures were stuck in a certain pose. Like the TMNT figures, or Robin's karate chop hand, or even Spider-Man with his web shooting hand. I prefer when hands are in a fist. Great feature, Dan. I love looks at classic toys. I know TNTS is done and over, but I loved the occasional history lesson you guys tossed in. Ever consider continuing the story of how Marvel Legends started?
Is it possible to remove the suction cups from nightcrawlers body?
I had all of these as well, that stupid accessory of cyclops's I lost pretty quickly I loved all the toy biz marvel figures, I had Thor and I never understood why he didn't have a cape. But you're right Dan. Those were the days when and action figure was meant to be payed with.
I bought a 1993 wolverine And a 1991 storm for 20$ at my local comic shop.
You got ripped off!!!!
I had nightcrawler and I loved him. His tail broke so I had to constantly replace it with a rubber band I painted blue with a pen and thumb tac it to his back.
I have the Wolverine in the Yellow/Blue costume with spring-loaded claws, Archangel, Colossus, Sabretooth (in his original costume, with battle damage feature), Juggernaut and Magneto with the light up feature (I think it was a better looking figure than the original one...same with the Wolverine). I also had that rather daft "Magnetotron", but enjoyed playing with it at the time.
My brother had Cyclops and Gambit.
I like this feature! Will it be a weekly thing, Dan?
The store I went to over the weekend had a lot of figures like these. Let me know if you are ever in the Orlando area. Really great place.
I only had the Angel, even though this line came out the year before I was born. It might have been a hand-me-down from a cousin or something. Or maybe my parents got one at KB toys. They always had toys from several years ago still.
Cyclops' Cerebro computer was used in the comics, it was developed to extend the range of Cerebro far past Xavier's range. So you may hate it but it's an accurate device for Cyclops to have. Apocalypse may not seem to be accurate to you but prior to 1991 he was much skinnier. Also you forgot to mention the Supersize figures. They were also released in the same year.
My first one of this line was Magneto II, which had a plastic cape, non-removable helmet, a gun (??) and a flint switch in his chest. Later including Apocalypse, Weapon X, Collosus, Gambit (with a plastic coat), Archangel, the repaint of Cyclops, Iceman, Mr Sinister and Forge as well as the Blackbird, Wolverine's cave + bike and the Magneto car. Characters such as Nightcrawler, Beast, Professor X and the female X-Men seemed to simply not exist.
Hope you do more Toy Biz X Men stuff like the X Force
My local comic store has a ton of these figures so I picked up the first 2 wolverine figures and a talking wolverine figure . Plus other superheroes not in the X-men such as captain America, Thor and Spider-Man
These toys plus the animated series got me.into marvel comics. For me, its X-Men then Avengers !!
I cant believe you didnt make the extendar/apocalypse comparison. Also, what about the secret wars toy line, they predate this one.
Childhood memories
Hey Dan or Anyone who can answer this question ,Has anyone ever seen a Kane x-force "blue leg gun holster " variant ? The only figure I need for my collection ! Starting to wonder if it actually ever came out , you can find
"red holster" variant easy .
I had this wolverine but there was x men line in the 90s where wolverine was more articulated than this and he had tiger shark uniform .
Just got punched in the gut by the flashback fist. Love this, we collect these figures and have over 70 from the 91-95 line.
Is this the same Flashback Friday segment that used to be on cooltoyreview?
I still have and use a LOT of these. I have 3 Marvel Earth's; Earth 616 which is my most complete Earth, and which gets the best Figures; Earth 777, which mostly IS mostly Toy Biz although some are being replaced; and Earth 818, which is where I'm putting Futuristic looking Variants. I am a 28 1/2 years Collector, I have made 10 different Earth's, I have about 3500 Figures.
Kb toys always had them never did get the original deadpool figure or US agent or punisher my parents spoiled me with action figures so I was ok I still have a love for these because of the awsome art on the card
Mr. Pixel, more of this please. Spider-Man TAS toy line, next please??
Great video!!!!!!!!
I had all of these and never hated on girls so yes Storm also and all the ones after except for ones I could never find like Iceman, Weapon X, Sauron, Deadpool, just the ones I remember. Lol good times R.I.P Kay Bee and eventually Toys r Us.
Toys R Us is gone, but KB is set to return.
I have all the X-Men toys in the comics my favorite is wolverine when you pop out his claws and cyclops wearing his x Factor uniform with the light of eyes and I had Colossus and archangel but I never had nightcrawler that is weird I did have magneto and apocalypse and juggernaut
Thanks! Gracia Si!!!!!!
Great review.
Dan where do you live? also why did you cancel that new toy smell?
Hey Dan!Do you remember the Secret Wars toy line? I think they were made by Toybiz as well but were a tad inferior in articulation and sculpt. I am almost positive they were released in the mid 80s. That Wolverine was the 1st Marvel figure I owned. I also had Captain America, Spidey, Iron Man, Dr. Doom and Kang. I believe Doc Ock and Magneto were in that line. If you have them or can get ahold of them please do a vid! I loved those figures.
Secret wars was made by mattel , in 1984
dude your awesome!
cool xmen
didn't you already upload this video?
I got the wolverine toy
Tymeka Conley awesome. Me too! Tell me you didn't loose the mask
Man I remember that line I had almost all of them that year I would wait and spend my allowance on them every week. I was talking to a friend of mine and I remember when all the great toy lines only cost $5 a figure man I cannot imagine how much it wil cost when my kid turns 18 if the are like $15 now with d.c. and marvel acion figures even the 3.75 re litte pricy,
Those first few waves of comic figures released by Toy Biz (their one DC wave, the first "general" Marvel wave and this X-Men one) were absolutely horrid in most ways. Having grown up on Super Powers, Secret Wars, GI Joe, TMNT, these were horribly goofy looking at time; everyone I knew hated them, but we all bought them because it was all that was out there. Thankfully TB got their stuff together by the 2nd waves of their Marvel lines.
Weird, I've never thought about you as the x men type of guy, nice to see you share that interest!
I always called that Wolverine figure the De Niro version.
My Cyclops still has the light! A couple of years stopped, and i dont know why one day started to work and (believe me) more powerful... Well they re mutants... what can i say?
Is there 90 deadpool toy
Did Dan leave PCN?
Es guuud! keep this up Fridays look nice!
this is a good show. and is good is not name "That Old Toy Smell"
Even though these toys dont match today's standards, ain't nothin like your 1st love! In some ways these classics are better. Now the Wolverine action figure claws just stay out and are liable to get all bent up.
I don't know if I should take my out of the pack or not I want too
You should leave them in, unless the package is in really bad shape, or if the figure is "melting" inside of the package.
you know they have an uncanny xmen mutant hall of fame toy set
I remember these being quite hard to find when I was a kid. Also funny to think that only half the X-Men characters were actually X-Men at the time these came out.
Toy Biz never really had good sculpts back in the early 90's. I remember their Punisher action figure with a nicely groomed hair style and conservative looking face. They improved a little over the decade.
Hmmm interesting. :)
do u have the walking dead toys if so can u make a review
(1991) X-MEN
Excellent video! I got into reading and collecting comics the same way. I had no idea that being a mutant was cool. Wolverine was also my favorite character and I too bought his toy biz figure. I didn't like the claws because it looked like salad forks and so I customized him. I took six tooth pics painted them chrome and then stuck them into his hands. ik Unfortunately losed this figure. Oh well keep up the good work and you have me as a subscriber!
1991 doesn't seem that long ago.
