This locomotive is located in Topeka, Kansas. It was at one time going to be restored back to operation. More information can be found here csrail.org/3463
One of two surviving Atsf rr 4-6-4 Hudson type locomotives, the other engine being Santa Fe 3450, the 3463 belongs to the 3460 class of Hudson type locomotives built by Baldwin in 1937. I would love to see engine 3463 be rebuilt, restored and returned back to operation again but locomotive maintenance especially for steam locomotives take a while, and if a decision was made to restore engine 3463 back to operation who knows how many years that process would take. I am still glad that the 3463 still exists as a display locomotive but this engine needs some type of protection such as a storage shed to be built around it.
Pretty much in the same condition as I. I watched these magnificent machines roar past bedroom widow, for I lived in railroad housing, as a young child.
With 84 in drivers and a ~100 sq ft firebox, it's the only steam locomotive that has a serious chance of beating Mallard's speed record. And there are also no American 4-6-4s in operation. So people really need to start supporting a restoration for this engine.
Who's responsible for letting this terrific locomotive fall into such miserable disrepair? It may be tough to get adequate funding for rebuilding and operation, but at least do a restoration and get it under cover to preserve what's left. Doesn't anyone in Kansas have the will to do what's been achieved elsewhere in the U.S.?
Back in 1997 or 98 my employer sent me to Topeka, and to the fairgrounds to supervise the electrical installation of the compressor skid for a new ice rink in the building near that locomotive. As I was from out of town, at lunch time I would sit in my rental car looking at the Hudson. It was fenced in with a pole type electric service and up in the cab was a large vertical air compressor. The tender had been worked on and appeared in very good shape. So just about every day, for about a week and a half I waited to see if anyone who was working on it would show up. No such luck. I drove down to the Amtrak station to ask the ticket agent if he knew who was working on it. The only thing he told me was that some Ole timers, perhaps from the Santa Fe were working on it from time to time. So after my job was completed, I returned home and your video is the first time I’ve seen it since I was there. We can only imagine that those who were trying to restore it, perhaps have passed on, and know one is interested in restoring it. I know how much work and dedication it takes to work on railroad equipment. I helped restore a pair of E-8’s that were sold to Iowa Pacific, and over time got trashed. Sometimes I wonder why did I spend so much of my good time, and then an organization decides to get rid of historic locomotives that many people worked on, and never get a new lease on life. Thank you for sharing your video, and as a footnote, I do know an individual who at one time wanted to move that locomotive and get it restored, but I think that time has passed. At least it is not completely trashed. Dave
@@trains365 Yes the main rods are sitting on top of the tender, you can see them at 4:07. They were removed by CSRail in anticipation of them moving the locomotive for restoration. Then ownership ended up in court, wth CSRail winning the custody battle, but by that point CSRail had moved on and didn't need it as a test bed locomotive anymore. So here it sits.
@wolfgangpfeilergartenbahnd6530 CSR is still going ahead with restoring 3463 to operating condition. They need donations to move the locomotive and build a engine facility.
Looks like it could be restored to operating condition!🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂
They better find the main rods and the valve levers.
Poor old girl
That would be great if they can restore it.
This wonderful engine should be restored.
It actually is being restored to steam again!
A great steam locomotive, it's a shame not to bring it to life. Thanks for showing and best regards
Poor old Choo choo

The tender looks perfect.
needs saveing
I don't know if it's me that this locomotive would be possibly as the first American Hudson to be restored to operation in the USA after Empress 2816?

Only surviving US steam locomotive with 84" diameter driving wheels.
The tender looks fine, but the locomotive isn’t
This locomotive was originally going to burn clean energy when restored
That would be awesome if someone with the means and $$ could restore it It will be quite the project just to move it
A restoration was started and had to stop due to legal issues.
Someone else was trying to claim the locomotive and cut it up.
Imagine the stories it could tell. Wonder how many miles it did.
I bet that locomotive did over a 100 mph on some of the passenger runs.
Great video! greetings from IL!
Just going through slow rot.
Send to Silvis
SantaFe wasn't much into esthetics as far as their tenders went right?
Yes not much class with the tenders.
Wow

I hope the main rods are close by or it's going to be REALLY difficult to restore her to operation.
You are welcome. More and more park locomotives are being restored and returning back to steam so we will see what will happen.

Thanks Tom.
it doesn't look in too bad of condition haha i think everyone can agree these are just cool.
She is in absolutely horrible condition
Not too surprising considering it’s a park locomotive, but it’s still a shame
@@backonpro5679false, internally it’s in great shape
@@mratsfrailfan1894 the outside looks like it will be blown into pieces by the wing within a month or two
