  • I go through (in detail) what I plan to take with me on the Larapinta Trail.
    CORRECTIONS:
    1. PLEASE NOTE YOU CANNOT BURN YOUR TOILET PAPER ON THE TRAIL AS THERE ARE NO FIRES ALLOWED. YOU NEED TO TAKE IT WITH YOU AND CAN GET RID OF IT IN THE NEXT DROP TOILET.
    2. I WILL BE TAKING THE ADVICE OF ONE OF MY VIEWERS AND WILL BE OPTING FOR STERILISATION TABLETS RATHER THAN THE KATADYN SYSTEMS AND BROWNS BAG. I MAY STILL TAKE THE 1 LITRE UNIT JUST IN CASE I CANNOT WAIT 30 MINUTES FOR TEH TABLETS TO TAKE AFFECT. IF THE WATER IS FULL OF SEDIMENT, I WILL USE A SOCK OR MY BANDANA TO FILTER THE SEDIMENT RATHER THAN TAKE A BROWNS BAG.
    3. [LATE ADDITION] I WILL ALSO BE TAKING A CLOSED CELL SLEEPING MAT (ALTON GOODS) TO FURTHER PROTECT MY BLOW UP SLEEPING MATTRESS
    In the meantime I welcome comments and suggestions.

    did the anti-mice spray work?

    • @AlexsAustralianAdventures
      @AlexsAustralianAdventures  2 дні тому +1

      Difficult to say to be honest. I never had any problems with mice but I don't think many people are having many issues this year. The one time I saw a mouse at Mt Giles lookout, I sprayed a fair amount to be sure and I did spray around my camping areas when I was camping near the trailhead shelters.

    Just watched this again. What was the average weight of your pack each day Alex?

    • @AlexsAustralianAdventures
      @AlexsAustralianAdventures  3 місяці тому +1

      That depended on the day and how far I was between food drops and water. I’d say I maxed out at a bit over 20kgs and had a minimum of about 14/15kgs including a buffer of 2 litres of water (I never want to run out)

      I am busy culling a few things now having come back from another shakedown trip. Hoping to shave a few hundred grammes!

    Hi Alex. I have done the Larapinta. Your list similar to mine. A few thoughts - it's unlikely to be cold - I went in June and had some minus one mornings. I think your risk is more warm days than cold nights. Things I would change: I am a big fan of electrolyte tabs like High 5 Zero. They give you a lot more bang for your buck in terms of hydration per litre of water carried. What you have heard re hard ground is right - if you are confident in the 2 rock system I don't think you will need all those pegs. I needed 4.5 l of water twice as 2 stages you overnight with no water. An empty 2l coke bottle crushed up is a cheap way to get extra capacity. I didn't take any filtration system - most of the water supplies are roof run off and I had no issues - I prefer purification tabs anyway for the weight. I find a couple of 1m Grunt straps from Bunnings have innumerable uses. I also like a cut down army surplus closed cell mat - weighs almost nothing (a good trade for the weight of the filtration system OMHO). good for sitting on/laying gear out and putting under the sleeping mat in the tent. LTTS do a good job. re food - we took a bunch of sachets of instant miso soup - really nice at the end of the day. I'd go a pair of thongs rather than the shoes - hardly needed and weigh a bit less but personal preference (I took boots only, nothing else my mate had thongs) Zero buzzy insects the whole trip BTW - the environment is very harsh . Hope that helps and have a great trip.

      Thanks Michael. I really appreciate your feedback and ideas. I am going in late April to mid May, so I agree I don't think it will be that cold, but I will monitor the weather nearer the time and pack accordingly. My hiking clothes are very light weight and dry quickly. I use Hydrolyte, but I will look into the High 5 Zero tablets. I am thinking of taking 6 litres for the no water stages as I sweat a lot. I agree with the purification method comment - I'll consider that, but I will always treat my water. Thongs weight more than the Xero sandals which are only 346gs. LTTS have warned that due to the recent rain the flies are bad so will need to expect that. Thanks again and I will video my trip so you'll see how I get on!

    Very comprehensive Alex, you obviously put a lot of thought into what you take on a hike. Me too! I am walking the trail in August so will hopefully hear about your travels before I head out. Personally I would ditch the gaiters or just take light ones to keep stuff out. Also agree with your decision to cut back the water purification to the smaller Befree and tabs. Interesting your comments about mice not chewing through Dyneema and also about the peppermint mixture. I will be interested to hear how that works for you. All the best for your trip!

      I'll definitely be putting together a 'key learnings' video on how things turned out. I have already ditched the Quagmire gaiters for this trip and will be taking the lightweight versions - I hope I don't regret that!

    That was quite a long one but worth watching. Sound dropped out a couple of times though. I wish you well on your epic adventure and look forward to seeing the resulting video(s) on the trip. It's a lot of walking. Meanwhile, I'm going to see if I can manage a walk around the block this afternoon. 😁

    Mate I have to ask, what hat is that looks comfortable ?

    • @AlexsAustralianAdventures
      @AlexsAustralianAdventures  5 місяців тому +1

      It’s a great hat that takes a bit of a beating. I have to say I don’t know what hat it is. Someone local threw it out in the hard rubbish and I commandeered it. It happens to fit well and does the job. It is slightly wonky but I am not too worried about that.
