Pigsty terrified me as a kid. So did Dizzy Heights Hotel, another CBBC show from around the same time that featured a family of Spitting Image style puppets living in a hotel. There was one episode in particular where they ran out of food or something, and the mum’s eyes bulged out and she started foaming at the mouth and trying to eat everyone. It gave me nightmares for weeks.

For good or underrated, there's Invasion. A 2005 series which was a then modern 'Invasion of the bodysnatchers' story. A one season wonder, the programme was too expensive to produce for the audience it was getting, but the cancellation came quick enough for writers to come up with a decent ending for the show.
I really enjoyed this. It's an expensive looking show and stars William Fichtner, Veronica Cartwright and Elisabeth Moss.

I first saw Uncle Peter from Reeves & Mortimer as Charlie Chuck on the James Whale Radio Show, back in '89. I always thought he looked like Noddy Holder's Dad.
I could never get into any kid's shows that had any kind of puppet or people dressed up as puppets, (Rainbow being the ultimate exception, and maybe Mooncat, but we won't go into that), so the likes of Pigsty didn't stand a chance with me. I'd reached an age by then when the whole premise didn't appeal to me, anyway. I'd rather watch Rod Hull and Emu in the Pink Windmill/Emu's World, having first poured salt into my eyes.
I remember Police Squad, quite well. I was surprised there wasn't more episodes than mentioned. I must have seen all that were aired, as a result. Amazing how it never got more series of it made, really. A very well done parody of 70's/80's TV cop shows, for sure.

Absolutely LOVED Garth Marenghi's Dark Place! As a horror host, I'm a sucker for anything horror or supernatural related and this series sends up the tropes of low budget genre anthology series perfectly while lampooning the bloated egos behind the scenes.
Speaking of horror, I enjoyed the TV series "Contantine" from 2014. Based on the DC comics occult detective, it only ran one season of 13 episodes. An engaging character with well told stories. Why it didn't catch on, I have no idea.

Excellent- Cardiac Arrest, the first show written by Jed Mercurio (of Line of Duty fame) who was a Junior Doctor at the time. It follows the life of group of junior doctors around 2 separate wards of an NHS hospital as well as highlighting the poor management & corruption from the management of the hospital. it's excellently written & known for it's often dark & controversial depiction of the medical profession.

The Good: Soap (ABC 1977-81) - a parody of American soap operas. Had the usual soap opera tropes such as sex, adultery, and greed and mixed in outrageous topics such as alien abduction, religious cults, and demonic possession. Launched Billy Crystal's career.
The Bad: Joanie Loves Chachi (ABC 1982-83) - Takes the two least-likeable Happy Days characters and puts them a show where the two pursue a career in music. Just awful.
The Underrated: Quark (NBC 1977/1978) - Sci-fi comedy about Adam Quark - the captain of a space garbage collection ship. He yearns for real adventures and (un)fortunately gets them. The show parodies such sci-fi classics as Star Trek and Star Wars. A pity it only lasted eight episodes.

A suggestion for the excellent list is "Clive James in...." (LWT 1982 - 1987) and "Clive James postcard from..." (BBC & LWT 1989 - 1999). Very similar programs but with the original move of broadcaster it got a name change.
Clive James travel programs each episode focused on a different city and more often than not a specific event or personal experience in that location. His Las Vegas episode based around the Las Vegas grand prix, his episode in Japan featuring him appearing on Takeshi's Castle and trying to learn more about the Japanese approach to television or Hong Kong looking at the possible impact of the return of Hong Kong to Chinese rule.
These different approaches and experiences combined with his just wonderful use of language make these more than the standard travel program.

Love GMDP. Missed the original run but bought the DVD on the off-chance (it was probably on offer in HMV...) and really enjoyed it, so good. The whole thing was really well done IMO. That was my first introduction to Richard Ayoade (I was never really into the IT Crowd, though I don't know why as I like a lot of the cast...) and I have to disagree with you, I think he's hilarious. He was good on The Crystal Maze when C4 brought it back too, which I was glad about as I grew up enjoying the Richard O'Brien/Ed Tudor pole era.

Talking of scaring the kids; Spine chillers. Ran in 1980 as part of children's bbc, about 5.25pm approx. Produced by the Jackanory producers for older kids. It had readings of classic ghost stories. Freddie Jones among the readers. Twenty ten min long episodes were made. Had a very good animated title sequence. Picked up complaints on Points of view and in the radio times about scaring the younger kids. Even the title sequence did that. Apparently. But it was the kind of thing the BBC used to try, and it was underrated.

Another kids TV show was ITV's 'Animal Kwackers' produced by Yorkshire Television. A pop group who arrived on Earth from the planet 'Popland' consisting of a blue lion called 'Rory' on lead guitar, 'Boots', a tiger on bass, 'Twang', a monkey who was another guitarist and 'Bongo', a dog who was the drummer. The plot revolved around the group playing versions of well known pop songs and Rory telling the other members of the group and of course the audience a story. Essentially a slower paced British equivalent to America's Banana Splits. Not sure I'd call it excellent but perhaps underrated and worth looking at if only from a nostalgic point of view.

Excellent Steptoe and Son. I remember watching repeats of this with my Nanna as kid, we both loved it. Rubbish The Royal Bodyguard. The brilliant David Jason's talents were wasted in this.

"The viewer had to watch it to appreciate it." ⁉️
(I think he might have meant concentrate on it).
He seriously underestimated the intelligence of his audience. The statement makes clear his own IQ level.🤪👍

Hi there. For what it’s worth, here’s my excellent, underrated and bad list.
Excellent. FRINGE. This is the best series I’ve ever watched of all time. The writing, production and acting is just perfect. You invest in the characters and it pays off. A lot of modern series makes their characters to dark and complex. Yes, they are complex but they are relatable, warm and human. You actually love them like a family. Walter, played by John Noble is the best fictional character ever created, and John brings him to life perfectly.
Underrated. Superman and Lois. Ok, my wife and I decided to watch this not expecting too much, how wrong we were. This is a great modern retelling of the superman story and Tyler Hoechlin is now my favourite Superman since Christopher Reeves. He embodies Clark and Superman perfectly. Yes it’s comic book stuff, but it’s made very well here. Mixing Superman’s dilemmas of finding balance between saving the world and being a husband and father.
Bad. Squid Game. I gave into the hype and decided to try and watch it. I made it almost to the end of the first episode, it’s pretty dire. I’ve no clue what was going on really and I just got very bored.
Anyway, that’s my round up. 😊

I didn't get time to watch Squid Game till well into the hype. In the first episode I found the lead character annoying and unlikeable. But I thought it's obviously the start of a character arc so I will have to bear with it. The second episode could be skipped and all you would miss would be the introduction of one supporting character. But from episode three on it really clicked and It held me after. It's worth sticking with.

I like the format. Can you and the listeners tell me what you think of 'Hogan's Heroes'? I think it's OK, but can understand people being offended. I realize this does not fit in the format I just praised. Also, might a dislike of' 'Hogan's Heroes' inspired 'Heil, Honey I'm Home'?

Excellent is still game, very funny Scottish sitcom about a load of OAP's
Utter, utter crap was Hold the sunshine, that awful show John Cleese did a few years ago with Alison Steadman, Big John fan, love monty python and adore fawlty towers, but thus was very boring and tame and sadly Cleese couldn't save it from being poo.
Underrated, I enjoyed Trollied, set in a fictional British supermarket, I particularly enjoyed the old lady (who was the mother in early doors) , who worked alongside Stephen tomkinson on the pharmacy counter, she was quite forgetful and a bit scatty and thought Tomkinson's charictor was a real doctor, quite a few familiar faces in it, shame it was only shown on sky 1, luckily they are all on YT (I don't have sky anymore)
Its been remade as Superstore in the USA, it's on Itv 2 a lot, nowhere near as good, all American remakes are never as good.

    • @CarysCreatesThings

I've heard the cutaway gags in between scenes are similar to Trollied, and people have made comparisons because they're both set in shops. I guess it's similar to when some people thought Coupling was a British remake of Friends (I really didn't understand why people thought that either). I haven't watched much of Trollied but I really liked Superstore. It took me a while to get into, though.
