Good day eh!!! This Snap On was a cheap compressor. Now I know why!!! The parts were inferior quality. But it lasted for 11 years so I guess I didn't do too bad. I have sourced a new compressor and it seems to be a much better unit!!! Thanks for tuning in and take care!!

Hopefully the new compressor gives good service! Seeing all the videos you were watching of compressors blowing up helped Nannie realize a new compressor was the best option!!! Sure didn't want anything blowing up around here!!!!

It's too bad the compressor had to go to the big shop in the sky! But, it was nice that the Finance Committee approved the purchase of a new compressor. Enjoy your week!

Your wife is right and smart. I went down that road of rebuilding a AC unit. It was a Mastercraft so a new pump was easy to find and replace. It worked well for about two weeks then the pressure switch went out and I had to shut it off manually. I now use it at my cottage and have new, quiet AC in my garage... you did the right thing. Cheers

Good day eh!! Thanks. I think this was the right move too. The old Snap On was a cheap compressor to start with, but I liked that it had an oil filled crank and was vertical. I picked up a new Sanborn 20 gallon Vee Twin horizontal unit today and I think I'm going to like it a lot!!! Rebuilding the old Snap On was in the cards for a bit, but it seemed each piece I touched broke. Maybe it was me, but I think it was just a cheap compressor that was wore out!!! Thanks for tuning in and take care!!!

Time for a new compressor, Mike. I'm due for a new compressor, myself. I had already replaced numerous parts on my Chinese made pancake compressor several years ago and you cannot get more parts. About 3 months ago, the compressor acquired a new crack in a main outlet. Not able to purchase parts. Cray though, just prior to that, I gave away a horizontal 30 gallon compressor that was nice but a bit too large, so now I'm due for a nice new small 3 to 8 gallon compressor. I'm thinking of one of those noiseless compressors only b/c my pancake compressor is housed in the house garage and the noise is horrendous. Best to you on getting a new compressor. Have a fine week. Enjoyed a full-watch.👍🏽🙂

How's she goin'? I am finding out that a lot of compressors are made in China, but the more notable 'brands' have a supply of after market parts. The Snap On didn't have the replacement parts I needed, like your pancake one, and so it's not in service anymore. Too bad really, but that's what happens eh!!! Thanks for tuning in Don. It was nice to hear from ya buddy!! Take care!!

I used to have a 30 gallon sanborn v twin compressor. Seemed like a good unit, ran fairly quiet I remember and never let me down. Only had it for a couple years though. The only thing I'd do with that old compressor is get rid of the manifold and just put a normal single regulator on it.

My Sandborn is rattling pretty good. Mine is a 60 gallon 5 up inline twin. The cylinder on the side away from the fan overheats so I'm pretty sure that is the rattler. Not bad for 25 years... oops 26 years old.
The zinc castings tend to crack. Aluminum will give a little. Zinc or the mixed zinc and aluminum called zimac I think cracks.
Better to get the new one and send the old one off to the the shed. 😁😎

This is a happy ending Grampie. It takes a good man to know when to cut his losses and change directions. With your old compressor tank why don't you make yourself a portable compressed air tank. Strip your old one except for the pressure relief valve. Put a hose outlet and pressure gauge on it. Voila! It has wheels already so if you have to do some inflating out of reach of your hoses just pump up your tank to 100 plus and go to blow up tires and clean stuff. Have a good one.

Glad you got a new compressor. Probably the smart thing. I seen those SNAPON units at Costco and wondered if they are worth it. I turfed my old one this week after finding a pin hole in the tank end cap. If you need a good thread sealant, we use Leak Lock Gold on A/C , diesel fuel/ oil fittings. Comment ca va Dave? The parts alone would be around $100 I figure. I would have to re-plumb the copper line from the check valve to the pressure switch. Not a difficult job, but one I would need to buy parts for. The check valve could be bought, but since it was an odd ball one, it was more expensive. I was going to have to rebuild the air manifold. I was going to do it in copper and there would be a lot of fittings and so on, so that would have been more money. Then at the end of the day I would have a compressor which still had cheap parts and a rusty tank. I figured it was smarter to get a new compressor. Wait till you see it!!! Depending on the compressor that can be good or bad. With some compressors that will exceed the duty cycle what the motor or head are capable of and could cause it to wear out or fail sooner than expected.

  • @BruceLyeg

Use the old tank to join onto the new one. Double the amount of air you have before the compressor starts to kick in. My compressor is a Sanborn and it's been absolutely trouble free for about 10 years. I just change the oil whenever it looks dirty and that's it. I should probably change the belt at some point

Hi Mike, I am glad I found your page as I am in a similar situation with the same air compressor that you have (had) a Snap-on (model 691915). I picked it up from a neighbor for "FREE".
The manifold and regulator assembly is missing, I assume it is for the same or similar reason that you ran into.
I have a nice big shop air compressor in my shop but I thought this may be an easy fix and then I would give it to my Son-in-law for his shop (so I could use it when I visit him). So I too did the usual Google searches and phone calls to find that the items I needed were not available. Because the manifold was missing I do not know how this was originally plumbed? You mentioned that you were going to retire the old compressor to the shed I was wondering if you could help me with how it was ORIGINALLY plumbed. Either with some pictures or just provide some details. Whoever altered this unit the air comes out of the compressor head and heads to the check valve (the same one that broke on your unit) But I don't know where the air source is, that feeds the air manifold assemble? Can you fill in that information for me? I would greatly appreciate any pictures or help.

How's she goin'? Great to hear from you and thanks for the question!!! As I understand your question, this is the pressure relief valve popping off. Not an air outlet you would connect air tools to. Is that correct? There are 2 pressure relief valves on this Snap On compressor. One is right in the center of the manifold dashboard and the other is right on the output from the compressor cylinder head under the cowling. If it is the pressure relief valve popping off (this applies to either one), it could be there is dirt in the seat of the valve. To remedy this, pull the valve by the round spring clip on it's stem to make it blow off air pressure. Do this more than a few times. Then when it reseats itself, turn the valve stem back and forth to make sure it is well seated. If it still pops off after this you make need to get a new pressure relief valve. You can get these on Amazon or at a hardware store. There are several different pressure settings that you can get. I used the 125 PSI valve. You may need a higher pressure, maybe 130 or 140 PSI.
If it is air popping out of an outlet for an air tool, this would be caused by a bad female quick connect coupling. You can get these at most hardware stores or Amazon as well.
I hope this helped and thanks again for dropping by the channel!! Take care!!!

Shame about your compresssor, we feel a bit better about not getting around to our compressor maintenance now LOL.

Hey there Joseph!!! The purpose of my maintenance was to address the water in the tank. The other parts of the compressor failed because they were cheap. Not a problem though as I ended up getting a new compressor!! Thanks for tuning in and take care!!

How's she goin'? I often heard that saying, "If it works don't fix it." But that just scares me. This Snap On Compressor needed maintenance real bad. Grant you is was working before I started to work on it, but it was in bad condition and probably dangerous too. Oh well, it's toast now Gator!!! I got a new compressor today. I really like it!!! Thanks or tuning in and take care!!
