I've always been unreasonably proud of my Scottish ancestors and our national flower: the thistle. Most countries pick the most prestigious flower, the rarest flower, or the prettiest flower but Scotland went with the thistle for two reasons: 1. when Vikings tried a sneak attack one of them stepped on a thistle, shouted, and got them all killed when the Scots heard him and 2. because its also part of their national motto and an old crest which depicts someone tries to crush a thistle but only accomplishes driving the thorns into their hand and the motto being "nemo me impune lacessit" which means "no one who harms me goes unpunished".
