  • Alright. Space Engine now.
This was started 10 months ago,but I stopped working on it when I left for Paris. Now that I'm back, it was time to finish it.
I've always had this passion for space, like many of you, so I finally took the opportunity and made a video, since Space Engine has all the tools you need.
I remember 7 years ago, watching the "Infinity Pre-Alpha Tech Demo" and being in complete awe that you could fly into a planet without loading screens...but then that was post-phoned to make room for Infinity Battlescape...
A lot of research was done to see how I can get the best quality out of the engine ( v.0.9.8.0 ), so I had to edit the config files, some planets too etc.
Then put everything into AE and composed it.
Warning: Story of my life :p
I've been reflecting a lot lately on what I would like to do in this world, and what it needs from me, like last year, and the year before last year.
The question is always: should I study something else and broaden my knowledge, get some degrees and maybe have more security from that point of view or...keep doing what I like, study from what I find on the internet on the subject but maybe being more unstable?
I still haven't found an answer.
Like in previous phases of my life, I tend to focus a lot on things that I consider important but that people around me think they are not.
Trackmania has become one of those things. It has become a mania that has taken already too much time of my life.
I wanted to make 1-2 videos max, just to test it, like this Space Engine one...but then the videos started getting traction, people liked them, and that made me want to improve and try different things. So I ended up making 26 of them, not counting the ones I still have to finish.
In order to improve, I learned more about video editing, cinematography, photography, compositing etc. but then I also stopped drawing, stopped building RC planes, stopped sailing, stopped focusing on school just to focus on this.
My whole life is on the computer now and it's not like I live in a place that is polluted, gray and cold.
It's a paradise and I feel like I'm not taking advantage of it.
After my last experience I realized that what satisfies me is not the goals that I achieve but the things that I learn.
I learned nothing about filmmaking there, but learned a lot about work and people.
This is something I think you learn better with experience rather than with studying. (depends on what you are studying of course)
So this is an important factor that is keeping me back from trying my best to go to university.
I will probably learn many new things there but are they worth the sacrifice of the things that I would have learned from not going there?
I know it's a 1st world problem, and that on the absolute scale again, it's just stupid, but this is what I've been wondering these days...I'm a human too after all.
Anyway...I usually avoid writing these things here because each one of you has his own problems and don't need to listen to mine as well...but maybe some of you might find them interesting, I don't know.
Speaking of things that I think the world is missing...one of them is "quality", in general.
It's a world that wants quantity. It's better having 5 bottles of dirty water than 1 with clean water.
Better having 1 broken videogame every year, than having a good one every 5 years.
Still better than nothing of course.
But people unintentionally agree with that, by buying the dirty water or the broken videogames, so nobody cares about finding a way to sell 5 bottles of clean water or 1 good videogame every year, because the cost would simply not be worth it.
(The water one is just a metaphor, I'm not comparing it to videogames...just to be clear)
So there is a crisis of values, where garbage is being sold like gold to the masses and real gold is appreciated by too few.
In conclusion, under these circumstances, my content will not go anywhere.
I'm not saying my videos are gold, but neither garbage...what I'm trying to say is, quality can't feed me, unfortunately.
It takes too much time and care to do a good, solid video, for only too few people to understand the difference from a fastly, badly made one.
And usually it's the fastly, badly made one that is more profitable.
Just compare Eye Candy with River, a video that took 4 days with recycled content from older videos and crappy effects vs one that took me several months and has a lot of thought and research behind for the story and the effects.
    Should I find a balance in-between?
Well, I don't do it for profit, but I will have to one day, If I want to survive.
    Thank you for reading...
    Cya

Dude, you dont need to overthink your work too much. Eye candy was satisfying to watch, but River became one of my favorite videos on youtube. No matter what you do, or how long you make it, if you enjoy the process and you think u put enough effort to it, it's gonna be gold, and it's gonna shine. And yes, quality needs time, and I am very happy that you don't shitpost every day. I wouldn't care if you don't upload an other video in a few months. Because I know it's always worth to wait for your content.
Also, nice job on this one! I'm into space since i was a little kid, wondering every night what's beyond our imagination. Thanks for sharing this chill video!

I agree with what you said regarding quantity vs quality. Having discovered your channel just a few days ago and having seen both River and Eye Candy (among others) I have to say that I loved both. I was really amazed by the choreography in River and really appreciate the amount of work that went into it (especially after having watched your camera tutorial). I liked Eye Candy for the absolute bombastic feeling it gave me. I liked the videos where you made more jokes rather than artistic content, and also vice versa.
I believe you're looking to settle on one or the other regarding the content the you make if you ever want it to sustain your life. While quantity does pay, that is not to say that quality does not matter. Although, I would argue all your work is of very high quality.
I think you underestimate your abilities and you think that work that comes easy to you does not mean it's "quality work". You, sir, are already several tens of bars above what most people can or have achieved. What you perceive as "low effort, 4 days of editing scrap footage" was still loved by me and I bet many others.
Thinking along the lines of "what will the average consumer take away from this?" rather than "when am I satisfied with this project?" I find really helps the creative mind settle and worry less about the quality of work and more on the message/feeling you're trying to convey. When you work on something for a long period of time - you see all the smallest errors and imperfections, which will go unnoticed by many.
Whatever you decide to do in the end - I'll keep watching, loving and appreciating the work you do.

Thank you for this comment, it really helps seeing things from a different point of view.
You are right, it takes too much effort to satisfy yourself, and most of the time, it's not worth it, for the average consumer.
I also see that I've lost track of how my "fast" videos really are...
Yes, I do tend to underestimate them because, for me, they have a lot of room for improvement, and are not "serious" enough as I do them to relax from my "serious" ones.
But that's not the case for the majority of the audience...I need to realize that.
And I'm glad that you liked them both. It means you appreciated what each one had to give.
Thanks again, it's really good food for thought!

M8^^ I don't have the words for it what I would say to you in my motherlanguage. It would take some time too, to explain about the WHY I am with you. Talking about the deepest feeling in public - well - it's okay if it's okay for you but personally I think it's a little bit misplaced. Some of the comments below seems to be written from a true heart and soul. I like that a lot.
Nevertheless, keep an eye of yourself in the future, like you did in the past. Thats what I can read out of your "statement".
Share your work, sell your work but never ever sell yourself for any reason.
Well, your vid is really, really awesome and a pleasure to watch but with your words .... you touched me inside like never
    before.
Stay like you are, a friendly and open minded character. I absolutely like people of your kind.

I really appreciate what you do, it's a level of focus and determination to reach the best what you can do with your talent that surpasses many of other video creators. I said countless times, and should say again, that your effort, time spent and work in quality and improvements raise you above common video makers. Don't be sad if few people see your work, instead, be happy that jewels like this are hard to find, hard to polish, but in the end they will shine for those who see.
We will be here always to appreciate your content!

Wow... I... I just wasn't expecting that. This video, it's just relaxing, beautiful, awesome... You will just never stop to surprise me !
Theses shots are incredible I can't imagine that it's just a video game. This video made me think about how small the human is in this univers. This video made me think about this gigantic world around our world that is space... I had the sensation during a few seconds that I'm trapped in this world with all theses mysteries around it. It made me realize that we don't know everything, we know pretty much nothing of our univers.
Believe me, if all theses things happened in my head when I was watching your video it is because you really have a power. The power of transporting me (maybe I use the wrong word) into another world and not many things has the power of doing so well. Like video games do, of course, but rarely like that.
Maybe I wasn't really clear while writing this but I just want you to understand that your uploads, since I'm subscribed to your chanel, were always quality. And I feel like you can surprise me again and again and again... Your the type of guy who wants to put time on his uploads and look for every details, and even if it's taking alot of time that is worth it.
After reading what you said in the description I pretty much understand your problem and this is the kind of problems that are really hard to solve. I can't really help you with that, I can just say how much your uploads are awesome. I can see your experience in your uploads and I can imagine all the months you put on them. With my experience I can say what is wrong in a movie, in a video game or in the uploads of a youtube chanel. To me, this video is real quality.
I hope you understood me, english is hard for a little baguette like me :p your work is really awesome !

The world is getting worse any day. Thats what i think. Everyday people try to do things faster to make more, to get more, to reach more. But after all what is left? Time for themself? Time to do what they want?
Time has become the most valuable thing and that is bad.
Those who do not focus on doing as much as they can with their time almost never have the opportunity to create dreams, to live their dreams.
As you said, quantity over quality.
It went that way very fast in the last years.
People want more, every second, every hour, every day.
But there are a few who are able to live in the moment, to let time past.
Reaching this is the goal of many.
And in all of this, where is the start?
And where is the goal reached?

OH MY GOD THIS IS FUCKING AMAZING. Which means YOU are amazing! And Space Engine too of course. Awesome that the creator of SE complimented you on your filmmaking!! Really says something.
And thanks for sharing what you've written in your description, I haven't read all of it yet, I will now, but so far i get the overall tenner. I too am facing a dilemma in a similar way; I'm studying Astrophysics at uni ( actually it's a double major in experimental & theoretical physics with a dash of astronomy/astrophysics courses; but if I do complete the degree it's titled a Bachelor of Sci - Space Sci & Astrophys). The issue is I've been taking much longer than expected to complete it have become somewhat disillusioned by academia, but I think I now realise that even though I likely won't *directly* use the degree (e.g. by pursuing postgraduate study) , that I should still strive to finish it since I might be glad for doing so in the future and could be useful... hmmm... we'll see..
Good luck and I wish all the best for you!

    • @DaniXks
      @DaniXks  6 років тому

The 1st one is a shot that gets sped up fast as time passes in the editing program and uses the redundant frames to simulate motion blur and the 2nd one is one that is already 6 times faster than the original at the time of the recording and gets slowly sped up to 8 times as the shot approaches it's end, again using the redundant frames for motion blur.
It is worth noting that the 2nd one was more complicated because of the camera movement which you had to do while shooting. Now Space Engine has a camera path tool and shots like these have become much easier to make.
